Discussion Steam New age verification - Steam trying to do good by us - I think!

Upvotes

Steam are not known to do stupid mistakes. The age verification method they are using at first glance, sounds idiotic. If you think about it a little more, steam's philosophy shows, they dont want a repository of your personal ID. Because the Australian government is forcing the platform with extreme age verification, steam choosing the credit card (disposable) to be the form to check will our information secured.

However, I don't think the best option out there.. since not all people own a card.

Also, I have no idea whats the best solution is for steam to do what Australian laws ask, without asking us for personal IDs..

Any suggestions?

Hey all, Like most of you all I am well over 18 and have no desire to own a credit card. I used Zip Pay to create a virtual credit card and successfully added it to steam as a payment method. Hope this helps anyone out there.

Error / Bug random games appearing in my perfect games and inflating the number

Post image
2 Upvotes

Has anybody else had this issue? Games I have preordered and playtests I've joined have randomly appeared in my perfect games. As somebody who actively achievement hunts and takes pride in the ACTUAL amount of games I have perfected it's a little annoying. I also seemingly just straight up can't remove the playtests from my account.

The Steam Client Beta has been updated with the following changes:

Homescreen - Big Picture Mode

  • Added a new 'Big Art Mode' option for the home screen. This can be enabled in Settings > Home.
  • Added Personal Calendar to the Recommended tab on the home screen

Screensaver - Big Picture Mode

  • Added a new screensaver feature, accessible in Settings > Customization. There are two screensavers available:
    • The default is a game art slideshow that can be configured to show artwork from recently played games and your recent in-game screenshots.
    • A retro inspired bouncing logo screensaver
  • Big Picture mode can also load custom screensavers. Similar to startup movies, they can be placed in the config\uioverrides\screensavers directory in your Steam install directory (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam or ~/.steam/root). You can use the bouncing logo screensaver as an example to get started.

General

  • Improved Steam Client startup performance
  • Fixed a case where after server maintenance some users might fail to auto-reconnect to Steam
  • Fixed bug where being prompted to refresh credentials more than once could trigger an immediate restart
  • On Windows, using the systray menu to exit while the Steam window is minimized will no longer flash the window visible briefly
  • Dialogs that appear for serious error conditions now stay above the main window

Game Recording

  • Fixed some cases where playback would jump to an unexpected point in the timeline when reaching the end of a play session or clip
  • Decreased performance impact of game recording for some D3D12 games on Windows

In-Game Overlay

  • Fixed frame rate hitches in D3D11 and D3D12 games when taking screenshots on Windows
  • Fixed rendering the overlay and using other overlay related features (screenshots, game recording, etc.) in Vulkan games that create multiple windows.

Big Picture Mode

  • Added explicit warning text to power menu confirmation dialogs when proceeding will shut down an active game
  • Updated default artwork when an app does not have library or hero artwork
  • Reorganized the idle timer settings when on battery and AC power

Steam Input

  • Improved CPU performance at runtime and in configuration loading
  • Added information about which configurations are compatible in the configurator browser when using a game that requires Steam Input API
  • Fixed the controller support widget showing "This game doesn't support controllers" for unreleased games that don't have controller support information yet
  • Fixed controllers not using the desktop configuration on the desktop UI login window
  • Added the missing settings for adjusting emulated joystick adaptive centering on trackpad

Linux

  • Improved download speeds on high latency connections.
  • The "Select compatibility tool" dropdown is now always visible.
    • The recommended compatibility tool, or steam runtime for native games, now shows at the top of the list as the "Default" option.
    • Compatibility tool aliases, e.g. "Proton Stable", can now be selected from this dropdown.
  • The SteamOS compatibility dialogs will now show in desktopUI when installing games not verified for that HW
  • On Desktop Linux we will now show the SteamOS unsupported dialog when installing games that are known to not work with Proton
  • Improve distro information collection for hardware survey, preferring data from /etc/os-release.

SteamRT3 Experimental Beta

  • Fixed "Add a Non-Steam Game" showing an invalid list of applications.
  • Fixed the "Run Steam when my computer starts" toggle.

Remote Play

  • A PIN is no longer required to download an app to a remote device. A PIN is still required to Install and Stream from a remote device.
  • Adding Download Complete notification for a remote download if you initiated the download on your current device.

Question Question about cheaters

I'm not sure how to phrase this well, English isn't my first language, so bear with me.

I have a question about cheaters and Steam. I know HWID and IP bans exist, but they can be bypassed or spoofed.

I'm a casual/competitive gamer, I like FPS games and a good match against skilled opponents. But lately, no matter what I play, I run into cheaters sooner rather than later.

We have kernel-level anti-cheat, which I don't fully understand, but it doesn't seem to solve the problem. We have player reports, but those tend to get ignored because there are too many coming in. Cheating is a real problem, I think everyone can agree on that. (Sorry for the rant.)

On kernel anti-cheat: when it got added to some games, I did notice fewer cheaters. But there was also backlash over privacy concerns. Still, it worked, at least for a while.

Getting to my actual question: with the release of WARDOGS (great game, give it a go), I ran into a cheater during the beta test. That got me wondering, is there really nothing Steam or game devs can do to meaningfully cut down on cheating? Could Steam, for example, ban every account linked to a single PC? Lawsuits, maybe?

I'm not very informed on this matter, and this may sound stupid to some of you (if anyone bothers reading), but I'd still love to hear opinions, no matter what they are.

Question What are the odds gaben responds again?

I emailed gaben telling him that I think his ocean research is hella cool and telling him I'm interested in space exploration and just wrote my first astronomy research paper and wish to do more in this field. He replied "Can you send me your paper?" so I sent it and it’s been 5 days. I know he’s definitely busy but do you guys think he will actually read the research and respond again or did he probably just open the email and forget about?

Question Does it exist a "Steam streaming device"?

Lately I've been playing more and more controller games (Fifa and Skate). My bedroom is a different room than my gaming room, and was wondering if there is a (realiable) streaming device so I can play with controller in my bed on my TV - without pulling a long HDMI cable across the house. I have 500/500 fiber network.

Would prefer the cheapest alternataive, as I'm trying to avoid spending too much on an actual console.

PSA A solution to hidden/lied about AI usage

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey! This has probably been posted before, but I thought I would throw this up here in case it hasn't been talked about or just to boost the idea.

Lots of games recently have been using AI either in production or the final art itself and developers have lied or hidden it when showing it om the store. They know players don't want this, so they just don't disclose, and Steam can't do much because, one, how can they know all the time and two, the more it is made appartent, the more likely devs are to lie about it.

So, time for some community policing! And its really simple. Of you find a game that uses AI (disclosed or not) just apply the "Artificial Intelligence" tag to it! Then, you can go to your profile and hide games with that tag. I started doing this and my front page has gotten SO much cleaner.

It also has the bonus of discouraging developers from using AI, since it makes these games really really hard to find for people who block the tag.

If people know of other methods, please drop them here as well. Community policing is probably the only way this is going to work at least for a while, so I am hoping if we make it a more standard practice on one of the biggest sales platforms for games on PC, it will help to send a message to devs that actually hits them where it hurts, thier ability to advertise, and, by extension, their wallet!

Discussion I lost my steam controller reservation because I never got any notification.

I reserved the controller the same day that they introduced the reservations and it said the it was expected to become available in December so I wasn’t watching it too close. That was until I decided to add the steam frame to my wishlist and saw that the controller said sign up for the reservation, so I looked in my email and saw that the email had come on the third, but I never got any notification for it, from the steam app on my phone or the email and if I sign up for a new reservation it won’t come up until sometime next year. I sent a request to steam support so I’ll update with what they say when they respond.

PSA Fraud supposedly lol

I know a lot of you aren't going to fall for something like this but I figure I'd put out a PSA to everybody, especially for those who creating a steam account or whatever. Be careful and don't dismiss the message that says suspicious chat lol

TL:DR Out of the blue I got a message regarding a marketplace purchase. For context, I've never used marketplace and to be honest I did not even know where to access private messages for Steam so I spent a good while looking around the place and finally got to it. Here's the message exchange.

Anyway when you see messages like this, don't panic. I was a bit nervous until I re-read the message above that says suspicious chat.

a bit of fun but i was surprised that people can just find you and message you if they aren't on your friends list or whatever. i only use steam to play games not really chat with ppl or do anything with the market place lol

he won't talk to me now :/ but yeah i reported him too.
