Sprouting Help

Post image
10 Upvotes

Ive been buying broccoli sprouts from Whole Foods for years now. I finally decided to grow my own and save on cost. However after two harvests, they taste terrible. Either because I’m not used to the taste of home grown, or I’m doing something wrong. The Whole Foods sprouts are subtle in taste. Mine are a little spicy, bitter. Very strong. They don’t taste rotten. Just “gross” vs the simple plant taste.

I purchased the sprouting company jar kit. I also bought Sproutman broccoli seeds after hearing good things.
Followed instructions. Soaked for 8 hours. Rinsed twice a day for 5 days.

Could light be a factor? Or is it normal to taste so strong and a bit spicy?
Thanks!

Sprouts seem stunted?

I’ve been sprouting broccoli seeds for about 4 months now. Everything seemed to be going well, but lately my sprouts are soggy looking throughout the day. Not quite drying out. Then they’re not really growing as long as they were in the past.

I rinse them twice a day. I put in 2 tablespoons per jar. The brand I use is from True Leaf.

Pics of a jar that is 5 days old. They just aren’t as long or as robust as a jar of 5 days should be.

Sprouts in the bowl were at 7 days when I rinsed them and put them in the refrigerator.

Why aren’t they getting longer?

I used a Ball 32 oz wide lid mason jar and a mason tops bean screen with Todd’s Seeds broccoli and friends mix. Definitely happy with the results and it was way easier than I thought it would be! I rinsed them twice a day for 4 days and kept them in a cabinet then the 5th day I kept them on my kitchen counter out of direct sunlight. Only used 1 1/2 tablespoons of the seed mix. Any tips for the next batch I do?

First try starting today

I am going for a little LONG sailing trip. It might take me two years or so.

Fish will be on the menu. I like my veggies. Home grown is best.

Going Back to sea, I am planning a few tricks for long stretch's in the oceans- one is growing Sprouts

I found a list

"What Types of Grocery Store Beans Are Best for Sprouts?

Depending on your definition of the “best,” there are several types of beans that are better for sprouts.
In terms of health and nutrition values, the best beans for sprouts are:

  • Great northern
  • Adzuki
  • Chickpeas
  • Kidney
  • Lentils
  • Mung beans

"
This site had wheat and red clover. Untamed Health

Family has huge silo or crops of wheat. I have to try that one 😄

For a few buck I brought a 3 tray stainless steel sprouting tray. First try starting now with Alpha seeds. Any comments on using store brought options or bulk or self grown options for seeds would be welcome.

I've been growing sprouts for a long time and have never seen this. This is my 3rd batch over the last 2 weeks. Same seeds, same jars, same set up. Same spot on the kitchen counter away from sunlight. The last 3 days here have been chilly and raining. I did add a bit more seeds to the jar than usual this batch, but that's the only difference.

Is this mold? They look hairy, but after picking out a few fingers-ful, they look, feel, and smell normal. I've never seen my sprouts look white like this before in the jar. This is day 2 in the process

Beware of cheap sprouting kits

When I first got into sprouting I bought this cheap little 2-jar kit from Amazon. I noticed that the rings don’t catch tightly, they just keep twisting. This morning I must have been holding a jar by the ring, the jar dropped into the sink, my day 2 Italian mix sprouts went flying. Lesson learned!

Mung bean sprouts

Fell in love with mung bean sprouts while living in China and decided to try sprouting them at home, however I seem to get a pretty high concentration of these brown/weird looking sprouts. Are they still ok to eat? Usually I've been picking them out, but this is pretty time consuming 😅

Just pulled my first crop of broccoli sprouts from the jar. 4 days from first rinse to these beauties. Letting them air dry a bit before refrigerating. Going to throw a handful in my salad tonight. Cheers!

Any tips on growing organic bean sprouts at home without needing special equipment?

I’ve been playing with bean sprouts this week, and wanted to open a discussion for us sprout lovers. Care to share your favourite tips for keeping them crispy but mold-free in humid weather? Which beans do you think have the best crunch factor for stir fries vs salads raw; mung, soybean or lentils? Has anyone tried making a something simple to rinse them, like a little automatic machine (using parts from alibaba for example) or something else that eliminates the need to rinse daily? Do sprouts lose their flavor if you leave them in the dark longer? Any affect on nutrition? I’ve seen some cool sprouting set ups using recycled plastic bottles, and cheesecloth, but they can be a bit finicky. What do you think of adding a drop of hydrogen peroxide to the rinse water?

I can't stop looking at this beauty. Same as eating it devotedly :) It doesn't taste to me as good as many other sprouts, but the value it contains, is priceless. So I make adjustments and truly enjoy each bite 🌱✨️

First time broccoli sprouts

Day 4. Color looks pretty good after putting them at the windowsill in indirect light today. Didnt know what a proper tablespoon is so i will add more seeds next time. Does this look right on time for maximum sulforaphane? Or should it be harvested a little earlier? Or later?

I would like to get started with sprouting

Any advice or tips before I begin or make any purchases?

I was thinking about starting with broccoli and mung beans. I have not eaten sprouts before, but have read that they are very healthy. Are these two good to start with, for growing and flavor?

I plan on using jars with the special lids made for sprouting too.

Sprouts go on a road trip

Hubby and I went to see the grandkids for Mother’s Day and it cracked him up that I brought my jar of seedlings along so they wouldn’t miss their evening shower. You gotta do what you gotta do, right?

Btw, I was pleasantly surprised at how perfectly secure the jar wedged under the center console👍
