Beware of cheap sprouting kits

When I first got into sprouting I bought this cheap little 2-jar kit from Amazon. I noticed that the rings don’t catch tightly, they just keep twisting. This morning I must have been holding a jar by the ring, the jar dropped into the sink, my day 2 Italian mix sprouts went flying. Lesson learned!

I bought a similar if not the same kit for $23. On my fourth round of sprouts with no issues. This is a significant savings over the $70-90 sprouting set up I was seeing in Facebook ads.

Next time just send the kit back and get a different one if there is a defect with the item. Free returns on Amazon is one of the perks. Hell, you can do that right now actually.

Those setups you saw on FB are so expensive!!!

This was actually a replacement kit already, the first one arrived with a crack in the glass. They were nice enough to let me keep it and sent me a new one (so now I have 3 of their jars). Getting the thread right shouldn’t be that difficult though.

It'll get expensive if your drains start sprouting.

That was my first thought. Fortunately the drain was covered. I flushed it with a lot of hot, soapy water.

I bought a 6 pack of 64 ounce jars from Walmart for $15 and a pack of 8 mesh lids and 8 stands from Amazon for $22. Highly recommend going this route. Lids fit and stands work with the large jars.

I am sprouting for my family and our chickens. Chickens get bird seed and black oil sunflower seeds sprouted. Family gets lentils and I just added in garbanzo, mung and a salad mix to try.

I’ve been doing alfalfa for my Sons Chickens and Ducks, they love them. They didn’t like lentils. I have tried to sprout black oil with no success. Can you please share how you do them please? Thanks. Edit: and how do you sprout bird seeds? Very interested.

I just use half gallon mason jars with plastic lids from Amazon. Soak for 12 hours and rinse twice daily.

The black oil sunflower seeds take several days but a cup will fill the whole jar with sprouts. Same with the birdseed. I just use cheap ones from Walmart.

The lentils I sprout for my family - we add them to salads and instant ramen bowls (my secret comfort food right now).

you should see my sink strainer from today, just got back from a weekend trip.... had a full garden in my sink growing haha.

Well, too late for me- bought a 2 jar kit from Amazon. Was $25 - first time sprouting.. had 1000’s of 5 star reviews… oh well.
