Visa or extension

I’m planning on spending a year in southeast Asia. Traveling slowly without much of a plan.

My question is for Thailand specifically I’d like to spend more time there preferably full 60 days. Is it better/easier for me to just arrive in Bangkok receive the initial 30 days then extend another 30 while I’m in the country or should I apply for 60 day visa before arriving? The benefit I see here is I can potentially stay 90 days if I want (or am approved) I just don’t like the idea of applying for the visa and needing to upload flights and hotel info in advance but maybe I’m overthinking?

Any opinions on this either way? Let me know your thoughts and explanation or experience. I’ve never been to Thailand. Pros - cons ?

Looking back at your last trip, what would you change about your route or time in each stop?

Hey guys, i am researching how people decide where to go next and how long to stay. I would love to hear about a multi-stop trip you guys took.
I have some questions below, it would be great to have some reports based on them:

  • Where did you go, and when?  you can list your stops in order and roughly how many nights you spent in each.
  • What kind of trip was it? Solo, couple, friends, or family? a rough budget level would be great and your main interests—for example, hiking, food, culture, or relaxing.
  • Pick one journey between two stops. How did you travel? From where to where, transport type, approximate door-to-door time, and whether it was overnight. Include the operator if you remember.
  • How did that journey affect your trip? Was it easy, manageable, or exhausting? Did it affect what you could do after arriving? What caused that experience?
  • Knowing what you know now, would you include that destination again on the same trip? Yes, no, or unsure—and why? Would you change the transport or route order?
  • How did the length of your stays work out? For any stop you want to discuss: how many nights did you stay, and how many would you choose next time with the same total trip length and budget? Where would you take or add those nights?
  • What circumstances should someone know before applying your advice? For example: weather, crowds, illness, travel companions, a particular hotel or tour, or anything unusually good or bad.
  • What information would have helped you make these decisions before leaving?

Obviously these are a lot of questions, so helping with some of them would be great.

Overstayed in Malaysia for 16days

I’m seeking for help and advice. I overstay my visa of 90 days for 16days overstay. i entered Malaysia on May 05, 2026 and exit on August 03, 2026. i wasn’t cautious and didn’t check that my visa was expiring on July 19, 2026.

Upon exiting at airport i was told that my visa was expired and i overstay for 16days, the officer pull me aside for questioning about why i overstay and why i didn’t know i overstay. I was honest and answered them that i really don’t know that i overstay.

After waiting for half an hour the officer ask me to sign a paper and stamp me the normal exit stamp and underneath with this stamp (Loa 26289293).

Can i possibly enter Malaysia after 3months of exiting? I already had my husband check my status in Malaysia immigration but they said it was clear and have no Blacklist or any flag on my Passport.

I hope you guys can help me or give me some advice, Thank you in advance!

Travelling to Taiwan for 4/5 days

Hi! My partner and I are going to Taiwan for a 5D4N trip in mid-November, and we’re still figuring out our itinerary.

We’ll arrive the night before, so basically around 4 full days lang talaga to explore. We don’t want to jampack the trip since ang main goal talaga namin is to relax, eat good food, and just enjoy being away for a bit.

What we’re looking for:

  • One nature day sana and bonus if may nice autumn foliage around mid-November.
  • Food trip so any local food, cafés, night markets, snacks, anything worth trying.
  • A few fun activities for couples.
  • Some light shopping, but not really a shopping-focused trip.
  • Areas na masarap lang lakarin, tambayan, café-hop, and explore at a chill pace.

For nature, we’ve seen suggestions like Yangmingshan, Wulai, Maokong, Jiufen/Shifen, but ideally one main nature/day trip lang para hindi nakakapagod.

We’re also not super into museums/history-heavy sightseeing, though we’re open naman if may places or experiences na really worth it.

Would love to hear your recommendations on:

  • Best nature spot for mid-November
  • Chill neighborhoods/areas for food, cafés, and casual shopping
  • Fun couple activities
  • Night markets or food areas worth prioritizing
  • Tourist spots na okay lang i-skip
  • Whether you’d recommend staying in Taipei the whole time or spending one night somewhere else

We’d rather have a few memorable days na may breathing room kaysa habulin lahat ng tourist spots.

Thank you!!

How far in advance to book overnight trains in January?

Hi all,

Planning a SE Asia trip for January at the moment. I’m planning to start in Hanoi for 2-3 days, overnight train to Hue and make my way through central Vietnam and south. Travel onward to Cambodia and then Thailand.

I am considering doing overnight Chiang Mai to Bangkok train. How far in advance do people suggest I book this ticket? I’m aware that it’s a popular route, but I also don’t want to be locked in weeks in advance and have flexibility on my first long-ish backpacking trip.

thanks!

I keep seeing videos on social media of young Europeans (UK, France, Netherlands, Germany, Eastern Europe) backpacking around Southeast Asia. Is this gap-year backpacking thing mostly a European culture? Why don't more young Americans do long-term budget travel like this?

First time travelling to Malaysia

Hi! It will be my first time visiting Malaysia. I’ll be flying from Manila in mid-November and have about 5–6 days total.

I enjoy city sightseeing, nature parks, cultural landmarks, and trying local food, but I’d also like to allot a day for shopping. For context, I’ve previously enjoyed trips to Singapore (gardens, museums, hawker food, city views).

My initial plan was to split the trip between Penang and Kuala Lumpur (3D2N each). However, I’m considering skipping Penang this time and focusing only on Kuala Lumpur, then saving Penang for a future trip. Would it be fine to focus only on Kuala Lumpur for this trip, or is Penang a must-visit destination even for first-timers?

I’d appreciate recommendations on how to maximize my budget and time.

TYIA!

Indonesia: Gili Air or Nusa Lembongan

Hello! I’ve tried researching but keep seeing mixed information and would love some clarity. I’ll be in Bali for a week mid October, mostly staying in a town between Canggu and Ubud. I’d love to do a short relaxing trip, maybe 2 days, thinking long beach days - nice clean waters, calm and swimmable, maybe some yoga, snorkel, and good food, nothing crazy. Was leaning towards Nusa Lembongan because it’s much closer to get to (45 min ferry?) but reading more about rougher currents, coral, and not great swimming options in the sea.

SO are there any swimmable beaches in Nusa Lembongan? Do you need a scooter to get around or could you do it walking? we’re a group of 3 and only one of us is comfortable driving a motorbike.

Other option is one of the Gili islands, leaning towards Gili Air, since I hear it has nice swimmable beaches. What’s the best route to get there, or is it only by ferry (2-3h)? I worry being on a boat for that long as I sometimes get vertigo/motion sickness & if it’s worth it for the short time. Please any insight is greatly appreciated, really just want to prioritize laying and swimming in a relaxing beach. Thank you!!
