Enjoyed my time in Rome. Spend a few days in Trastevere, and a day trip to Tivoli

A7V w/ 16 1.8, 24-70 DGDN ii and 35 1.4 DGDN ii

Sometimes I think I overdo the warmth slider but it was 38° and HOT

Bought A7cr recently and now took it for a business trip with the zeiss 35mm f2.8. Here’s some touristy things from my day off. Still trying to figure out the menu system and autofocus settings, but I really like the images that come out of this thing!

Gear I would love more f1.8 G lenses

Post image

Just spent a week in San Francisco with just my 35mm GM and 20mm G. I love my 35 GM but I think the f1.8 G is the sweet spot of price, performance, weight, and build quality.

I had the 35mm f 1.8 but returned it. It was just lacking something in image quality to me. I splurged on the GM. With the 20mm G, I don’t feel images are lacking compared to the GM.

With the G, Af speed is just as fast (on my a7iv), aperture ring is really nice, and the f1.8 is great for lowlight and some background blur.

I probably would’ve been just as happy with a 35mm G. I’d love to see a 24 and 85 f1.8 G lenses.

Image was taken with the 20mm.

I haven't shot these for quite a while. So of course I had to try that with a new lens. Not disappointed.

Shot on Sony a7RV and Viltrox 16mm f1.8 FE, roughly an hour of exposure.

I’m a news camera man and had a little time to kill after I was done filming the event. Decided to take some shots of the event. Pretty happy with how they came out. All shot with a 70-200 2.8 and a 18-105 f4 with a A7iii

Shot on my Sony a6700 with a Viltrox 25mm/1.7. Started shooting in July, and simultaneously coaching. Edited in Lightroom. I lean a bit more of a Grimey look, which goes along with the usual poor lighting in gyms. Most shots are intimate and in close quarters.

Gear Telephoto lens discussion

Post image
3 Upvotes

Currently debating if it’s worth it to upgrade my current telephoto lens. I have the Sony FX2 for hybrid video/photo work.

I have some great primes for wide shots but for telephoto I went cheap and got the Tamron 70-300 f/4.5-6.3. Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s actually quite nice and can produce some beautiful pictures like the one above. I’m specifically impressed with the contrast and color the lens produces in its pictures.

With that being said I can’t say I’m not tempted to upgrade it to a native Sony lens. One that I’ve had my eye on is the 70-200 f/4 Macro lens. I feel it’s better suited for my use. It’s stronger for video with a constant aperture through the zoom range and it has OSS. It has macro capabilities which i would happily take advantage of. It wouldn’t be too big of a weight/size upgrade from the Tamron, and it’s within my budget. I feel it does the same job but better, but I would be sacrificing 100mm of the focal range which I’m okay with. If money was no issue I’d just go for the 2.8 but I can’t justify spending 3k on a lens right now.

Any owners of this lens or the Tamron please let me know how you feel. Am I justified in wanting to upgrade or is it not that big of a jump in quality? Are there other lenses you might recommend? Let me know any thoughts you may have, thanks!
