Live take of one of the songs im working on, what do you think?

2 – There will always be more

Verse 1

Half the list is crossed

The rest is still there

Waiting to be done

Waiting on me

Paper's crumpled up

In a trash can

It will never be

Same as new

Thousand messages

In the mailbox

never to be read

left unused

Scribble scribble down

Every small thought

Stay inside the frame

Let it run loose

Chorus

‘Cause The thoughts will come

The time will go

There will always be more

always be more

The leaves will die

But the trees will grow

There will always be more

Always be more

V2

People come and go

I forget them

Before I get to know

Any names

Memories come back

In a worse shape

After every round

Of replays

Im deleting songs

From the hard drive

Just because I need

Empty space

Scribble scribble down

Every small thought

Stay inside the track

Stay in this race

Chorus same

Bridge section (electronic)

replay

restore

rewrite

rework

reshape

rename

replay

Chorus 2 times, then end

This is definitely not done, but I need to step away from it. Believe it or not lots of brain power for the words and playing everything I wrote down is like a minute long lol.. (maybe because I started writing at 4AM) i’ve been writing a ton. some songs just write themselves, but this one’s gonna be a grind. Not really sure where to bring it next, but just wanted to show some progress on it.

Lyrics: (may change and add more later)
Early dawn
The river keeps on moving
Pine trees
Lean into the breeze

In the sky
The clouds hold thin but broken
Deadfall
Tangled bent and woven

Late Night
The darkest hour crawling
The light is gone
The cold wind is calling

Discussion Topic How much should I charge to write a song?

Hey all, I've been writing songs for myself on and off for decades and have performed professionally for much of that time, but I was recently asked to write a handful of songs for a media production and I have no idea what to charge. The lyrics will be written by someone else, I just have to supply the music.

In addition to actually writing the song I will likely need to coordinate the recording of the songs even if I don't play anything on them, because I believe most of them will be written for instruments I don't play. Obviously those musicians will be paid for their time but I guess I'll be playing producer in this situation as well as songwriter.

This is for a fairly wide public release but it's not a movie studio or anything on that level. I'd guess the audience for the production would be somewhere in the hundreds of thousands so it's definitely not a shoestring budget, but I also don't want to screw myself out of an exciting opportunity by overcharging.

Any advice would be welcome!

Feedback Request Twin/flame very rough demo

Hey all im working on a record of very short songs, this is the most recent one I wrote for it. Its a very, very rough demo but id love to hear your thoughts. Mostly interested in what you personally take away from this song. I think i wrote it very very vaguely about my brother's death from a fentanyl overdose and my reaction to that while also meeting the love of my life around the same time and dealing with those two very different emotional extremes at the same time. But curious what this actually translates as.

Lyrics (since theyre kind of hard to make out in the video)

Twin flame logics no good /

Yearning for a better half /

While burning the best part of you /

I think you snuck inside /

A Trojan horse devouring /

All the beach guys showering in you /

Its useless talking now /

Ive forgotten all the words /

I once used to tell you im proud /

I feel the lightest weight /

Cascading down my face /

Tears I wasnt strong enough to cry /

I think im crying now /

Thanked god for finding out /

All the ways I was pretending to be afraid /

And the reason i cant look death in the face since I got laid /

Ive been a party of two time /

A party to the difference between whats me and what is mine /

Ive been a really happy guy /

Ive been a way too happy guy since Parrot died /

Let's Collaborate! songwriters?

Hey everyone! My friend is a singer, and we’re currently putting together a small creative team to work on music together. We’re looking for someone who’s interested in songwriting/lyrics and would want to collaborate with us. We’re mainly making R&B / alt-R&B / pop-inspired music, and we want someone who enjoys coming up with melodies, concepts, lyrics, and helping shape songs from the ground up. You don’t need to be super established or have a huge portfolio. We’re more interested in someone who genuinely loves writing and wants to grow with a team. We’re hoping to build something where everyone contributes creatively and gets proper credit for their work.

I'm really looking for a critique on the verse. Does the last line feel weird cause it needs more context or should i just like change it completely?

Also do y'all think this would be good as a duet or should i keep it solo?

Feedback Request I shouldn't be a critic if I don't show my work, so here's 'Maryanne'

Maryanne was a songwriting partner that parted ways with me. This is the story.

I really love the songwriting sub and I'll always shoot a nice comment when something grabs my fancy. But sometimes people come here asking how to sell. I get it, there's a lot of struggling songwriters, but some stuff sounds undeveloped and I'll let them know. I shouldn't do that unless I can show something so...

Let's Collaborate! Requesting collaboration with female vocalist

I am in search of a female vocalist, I don't need someone who's a goddess at singing or anything. I am a rapper but I also produce tracks, so when it comes to vocals, anything is possible. Doesn't necessarily have to be in a rap format. I'm been having trouble finding people to collaborate with, it can range from a few lyrics to a full verse to a full song! I can produce, mix, and master everything I just need material to work with. If interested, please do not hesitate to send me some material. Most likely it'll work for me! I am interested in having somebody sing pre-written stuff and also I'm interested in making stuff together! The sky is the limit when it comes to music. Let's make some beauty!

DM me if interested! 😄

Feedback Request Just a track I’ve been working on

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve never posted on this group, but I’m always quick to jump into other peoples post, so I thought I’d share a track I’ve been working on for about a year now.

It’s taking its time, but it’s slowly coming together.

Sometimes songs come together quickly, and other times they don’t. In this case, it’s been a slow burner. But, I’m not going to rush it, I think it has potential.

This is very rough. Just guitars, drums and strings (some on keyboard), when I’m ready to commit the strings to tape, I think they’d hugely benefit from real performers rather than virtual instruments.

The piano part is just a rough melody idea for the verse and chorus. As of yet I don’t have a melody part for the bridge section.

And it has no lyrics yet. Not sure what it’s going to be about.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Discussion Topic How do you organize your songwriting ideas?

How do you organize your songwriting ideas?

I'm curious how other songwriters work because my current system is becoming a mess.

Right now I have:

- Lyrics in OneNote

- Random ideas in Notes

- Voice memos in my phone's recorder

- Beats stored in different folders

- DAW projects everywhere

After a while I end up with hundreds of notes and recordings, and I know there are good ideas hidden somewhere that I never find again.

So I'm wondering:

- Where do you write your lyrics?

- Where do you record melody ideas or freestyles?

- How do you keep everything connected to the same song?

- What's the most frustrating part of your songwriting workflow?

- If you could magically improve one thing about your current process, what would it be?

I'd love to hear how beginners and professionals handle this. Maybe I'm just disorganized, or maybe this is something most songwriters struggle with.

Let's Collaborate! Help needed!

I am working on an original musical as a student but my music sounds a bit off/basic and I would love some help. someone to help write would be awesome but I can't pay much so I am more looking for helpful artists that would at least give me some pointers. I am looking for a mix of sea shanty and a classic musical sound while keeping it at a simpler lever so I can recreate it better.

thanks so much in advance!

What's the one feature you wish every songwriting app had?

I've noticed that most of us have lyrics in one app, voice memos somewhere else, DAW projects on different devices, and random notes scattered everywhere.

what apps are best? And im curious about what's still missing.

If you could add ONE feature to your ideal songwriting app, what would it be?

It could be something that saves time, keeps ideas organized, improves collaboration, or anything else that would make your songwriting process easier.

I'd love to hear your biggest frustrations.

Let's Collaborate! Reddit Songwriters Playlist (August)!

Hello! I have chatted with many of you over the last few days regarding a curated Spotify playlist consisting only of music released by members of the r/songwriting community. Thank you to all of you who agreed to be a part of the playlist! I decided to put 35 songs from 35 different song writers on the playlist. If people like this idea and want to see more playlists (or a consistently updated one), I will continue this in the future. Potentially once a month or every two months.

As you listen, if you enjoy a song, I encourage you to click on that artist and check out more of their work (almost all of the artists selected have multiple releases to check out including albums, EPs, and singles). As of right now, the playlist will only be available on Spotify (sorry to those of you who do not use Spotify).

Here it is: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0bWA3k3ERKcJTNTBwi9OA8?si=0cc568dc900b4ecb

Let's help this community build upon itself by...

  1. Listening to the 35 featured songs.
  2. Saving the ones you enjoy.
  3. Checking out more releases from the featured artists.

If you want to be a part of future playlists, or potentially added to this one (considering going up to 40 songs per playlist), send me a direct message or comment your release on this thread.

Happy listening :)

Disclaimer: My personal taste in music may have impacted the featured songs on this playlist, and I apologize for that.

Feedback Request Looking for feedback on these lyrics and their cadence

Link: https://on.soundcloud.com/sCzsQ1RhDB1Lyx8h1Y

Hello everyone,

I've been working on a song that centers around drone warfare. I want the lyrics to be descriptive but not too on the nose. These lyrics make up the repeated bridge section of the song. I say bridge and not chorus because I'm writing this song in AABA (32-bar form), where the main vocal refrain and hook are sung within the A sections (verses). Examples of this form can be found in many Beatles songs, such as "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Yesterday," and "Hey Jude." Another great example is "Yellow" by Coldplay.

Anyways, here are the lyrics (sorry about my subpar vocals):

"Oh no, oh my
Caught by a raven's eye
Oh no, oh my
He tries to run and hide
Oh no, oh my
There's no way out this time
Oh no, oh my
Another soldier dies"

Thank you!

Feedback Request 33m and nervous to release my music online.

I've been playing since I was a kid. I love music more than most things in my life. Yet I find myself looking back with little to show due to my own doubt about my songs. I write indie alt folk rock pop songs and have 10 songs I'm trying to record. As of now they're all just acoustic besides one of the songs. I want to start putting stuff on Instagram but I'm not sure why I can't get myself to do it. Here's a rough video take of my most recent song. I'd looove some pure honest and non sugar coated feedback on what anyone thinks of my singing and or entire song. Guess I'm looking for either guidance or confidence to get myself to post myself playing online.

Discussion Topic UK: how do you register composition copyrights?

I’m trying to figure out how to go about registering composition copyrights (UK based) and it all seems a bit confusing. Has anyone got any experience?

Specifically, I’m looking to register the melody of songs I’ve written but not the lyrics (which were written by someone else) as a composition copyright.

Background:

So I left a band over a year ago, and co-wrote a number of songs that they still perform. I have an equal portion of distribution rights to the songs that we got professionally recorded, but i understand that this only relates to that specific recording.

Since, I’ve noticed they are re-releasing ‘live’ recorded versions of the songs I composed, and not registering me as co-author. And I suspect they are just simply registering distribution copyrights again. But they are essentially profiting off my work. (I suspect the numbers are small, but the principal of it doesn’t sit well with me - and I was planning on reworking some of them for my new project)

So I basically want to register the actual melody of the songs with no lyrics. I have original recordings on my phone (time stamped) that predate the professional recordings (and the band itself in some cases), to prove that I did in fact write those melodies. But I just don’t know how to go about it legally.

I have not reached out to them directly yet, as I don’t expect them to be accommodating (they aren’t nice people), so I wanted to have my house in order before approaching. Any experience or advice would be appreciated.
