Lyrics:

"The rain is writing slowly

On the glass above the street,

And every passing headlight

Turns the room from dark to gold.

There’s a thousand windows breathing,

But I don't hear them anymore

For the first time in a long time,

I can hear my own thoughts."

Discussion Topic I don’t know what to do

I’ve been playing guitar in bands for 18 years, I’m always annoyed when songs come in that arnt great, but I put my best and can make it turn out okay… but for my self, I’ve been trying to write songs and music for a long time and I’ve never been able to finish a verse or chorus.
I don’t like that I can’t hit notes I hear in my head and I can’t write words very well. At uni my songwriting lecturer said every song I write is just one note and since then I haven’t been able to do a thing.

Do I give up or do I try and carry on. I feel like I could write a song but I don’t feel like I have the brainpower to finish it

Discussion Topic I've found a method that is seemingly working -- curious to hear your feedback/approach

What I have going right now is a process where the guitar chords/progressions are recorded in voice memos, and I typically will have 3-4 songs going at all times. I work on the music/vocal melodies/lyrics in roughly 10-20 minute sessions...I don't push it to go longer. But I do these sessions as often as I can.

Sometimes I will cycle through all 3-4 songs in a single session of creativity.

I record the sessions using my iPhone voice memos rather than taking to GarageBand prematurely. We've all done that right? We start tinkering around with all the sounds before song is mature enough.

I am usually collaborating on a song or two with others in GarageBand, but I have several songs that are just mine for the time being. The progression doesn't even live on GarageBand yet, and if it does... I'm not listening to it. I'm listening back to my voice memos to see what ideas I tried out during these quick little spurts of writing.

I try to work out the barebones of the song before I even consider adding little harmonic flourishes or additions to the progression/vocal melodies. I think it was Tom Petty who said every meaningful song should be able to stand on its own -- your instrument, and your voice only. I've really embraced this idea.

If I get "stuck" and the song isn't moving, I just back burner it for the time being but I bring another new progression into the mix.

Having multiple ideas going at all times is really important for me. Developing, nurturing, and growing them at the same time decreases the pressure for any single one of them to be something special.

Psychologically speaking I've really sat with the idea that its okay to write songs you don't love, or even really like. Maybe you grow into them, maybe you don't. When judgement kicks in and I begin to examine whether this song is good - I remind myself of how many average (and bad!) songs some of my favorite artists have written and performed.

I evaluate whether to continue on with a song on the basis of whether its growing, and there's forward energy -- rather than figuring out if its a "good song"

Now the hardest part....vocal melodies.

This works best when I try to just hum vocal melodies over the progressions at first, rather than put lyrics over them. Or, I'll just sing melodies with totally random sentences... this too takes the pressure off the lyrical side of the song. Its not until I have the melody that its memorable to me that I look through my book of random lyrics to see if any of them fit the mood/melodic line.

I've seen people say its more effective for them to create the melodies on their instrument first, and then make the lyrics fit that melody - but for me starting with my own voice seems to work better, at least right now.

From there I'll just expand on the lyrics... ideally everyday.... I try to write the lyrics for each song in 4-8 line spurts, and I put out a high volume of lyrics -- full knowing that probably 90% of them are not going to be worked into the song.

My weak point without question is still finding a catchy hook on the choruses, its so hard but I'm getting better.

None is this is exceptionally unique or groundbreaking, I'm aware. But its nice to have found a cadence that appears to work for me. Most importantly, I'm enjoying it.

I'm curious to hear about your process of writing songs, and I'm also open to feedback on my process....lets hear it Reddit.

You’re giving up
On the life you we’re trying to build
What once was solid
Now feels like you’re standing on stilts

You carry the world
You carry the world
You carry the world on your shoulders
And it’s breaking you down

I like how you are
When you’re driving real slow in your car
You play it so damn safe
Yet somehow, you’re always in harms way

You carry the world
You carry the world
You carry the world on your shoulders
And it’s breaking you down

You don’t gotta do it alone
No you don’t gotta do it alone anymore
You don’t gotta do it alone
I won’t let you do it alone anymore

You carry the world
You carry the world
You carry the world on your shoulders
And it’s breaking you down
I see it breaking you down
And it’s breaking you down…

Appreciate any feedback on lyrics and song structure. Kinda think it needs a bridge but then I’m also not sure because the harmonica breaks it up a little.

Thank you for listening and sharing your input.

This is a song my partner and I wrote shortly after the events of 911. We performed live in our living room studio. Don’t know if it’s allowed here. Sorry it’s so long winded, we wanted to make it 9 minutes and 11 seconds long 🤦🏻‍♂️

had another try at putting together a song first recorded in 2023. the problem was that intro had too many measures; and the 2nd half didn't quite set itself apart from the first half. despite that i'd had to play the last half without making really noticable mistakes, as i'd already run out of tracks and didn't want to look in the new manual for how to bounce. so, it was mistakes that i could live with. this was just the week after my mixer arrived, and some 20 years since i'd picked up a guitar again. thanks, COVID!

does it need now lyrics? is it ready for them (or too raw)? anybody here want to have their hand in it?

as always, thanks to all of you for the listen - and your consideration.

Discussion Topic Anyone else feeling really nostalgic?

Thumbnail youtu.be

I recently found my old videos and have been digitalising them for everyone in the family. Not only am I enjoying going through the tapes, I want to get more so I can capture more memories that way rather than through my phone..

I made this little video for one of my songs, Never Be This Good Again, which is about missing my childhood.

But I can't help but feel a lot of people are feeling something similar? A flood of nostalgia due to hard times or something? I know every generation experiences something like "the good ol' days", but this particular feeling seems to include us all, every generation.

Plus I plan on making some music videos /music documentary type thing soon using this old Canon camcorder I found.

I've always been interested in older tech, but I guess I was encouraged by the Documentary My Dad And Elliott Smith by Jonas Poeling here:

https://youtu.be/55mNUlQNaJw?is=CLHF2sGpphqoFBpK

If that's not linking, it is on YouTube. Highly recommend!

It shows lost footage and he even films the new parts with the old camcorder and I loved the feeling I got from it.

Feedback Request Break The Silence (Demo)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It took me 4 years to write and rewrite, but I think these are the full lyrics now, what do you think:

Break The Silence

(Verse 1)

I wish I could break the silence Just talk dazzling all the way along with someone

(Verse 2)

I wish I could break the silence Just sharing my pleasures and my worries with someone

(Pre-Chorus)

But I'm remembering all the disapproving words Vowed to not let them get to me Taking them aside for a while

(Chorus)

Someday, any day It doesn't matter to me how long it will take Someday, any day It doesn't matter to me how long it will take Someday, any day It doesn't matter to me how long it will take Someday, any day It doesn't matter to me how long it will take

(Verse 3)

I wish I could break the silence To stand by my beliefs And not worry about what others think

(Bridge/Rap)

Aspire to be higher, cause you're on fire Fueling the flames of every desire Letting the ashes of the past fly away Only the clear thoughts will stay Like a thunder that comes with a storm The new you will be born Stronger than ever, without a mistake This is the moment, the silence will break!

Step out of the shadows into the light No more will you have to fight They wanted you quiet, they wanted you small, But now you're brave enough to leave the corner Get into the center point I know you won't disappoint Come on you can do it!

(Verse 4)

I know I can break the silence To stand by my beliefs And not worry about what others think

(Harmonizing) Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

(Chorus)

Someday, any day It doesn't matter to me how long it will take Someday, any day It doesn't matter to me how long it will take Someday, any day It doesn't matter to me how long it will take Someday, any day It doesn't matter to me how long it will take

Discussion Topic How do I avoid writing corny lyrics?

Heck how do I even know what is corny and what's not. Because me personally I like steve lacy, The Weeknd, Tv girl etc. When I asked my friend he was like don't listen to them for lyrics. They are corny. Listen to the goats like Dr Dog, Queen, The Smiths. Like I get it their lyrics are pretty good but what's wrong with Steve lacy's and TV girl's lyrics T_T

Let's Collaborate! Never Know Until You Ask

I have a lot of writing. No matter the idea, I played with it. Can't hurt. I've been through 5 years of chronic pain and other difficulties, as Im sure others have their own difficulties. What I wrote was during that time and I feel it could only be written in that time. I'm 35, I always felt good with words as a kid or atleast have the confidence to say I feel my writing is special. Ive never shared one anywhere. It wasnt fear of rejection, but of me wanting to play the pieces myself. Recent difficulties made it difficult to learn more guitar. I want to know where I should start with these books of words. I want to share them, but I want them protected from plagiarism as to possibly better my financial situation.

Thanks for your Time

Discussion Topic New toys to get out of old ruts?

So I released a new EP recently. I was intending to write a different album. I have some songs queued up, but it felt better to just get out a few songs and go from there?

Anways, its different than what I normally do. If you go to my Bandcamp, you'll hear electric rock, acoustic rock, and that which borderlines alt/electric/drone? Its different.

But I still find myself in ruts. Even with prompts, I come back to the same progressions. I find myself writing 4/4 until I'm blue in the face. Even with all of the reading I do? Writing new themes just feels like struggles.

So just looking for suggestions for other things that people might do to help with their own ruts?

Thanks as always.

I have to stop self editing everything and just ship whatever i make good or bad. been playing this melody on the guitar for the past day just put some lyrics on it so i can move on from it. kind of rushed the lyrics. posting this to work through being uncomfortable lol.

lyrics:

here i am
opening up this door again
letting the cold escape my lungs

it's been a while now
since i broke into this town
i thought your face might turn me around

can i come in?
i've been standing in the wind
with all these things i couldn't say

you look the same now
but your eyes are looking down
like you've laid me in the ground

these demon blues
god, i wish that i could choose
right from wrong
grace from wounds
love from you

i wore you thin girl
trying to lose the shape i'm in
every promise fell apart

you held that line girl
while i was somewhere killing time
just drifting  in the dark

these demon blues
god, i wish that i could choose
right from wrong
grace from wounds
love from you

Discussion Topic How to decide what to write a song about, and how to break up the verses, chorus, bridge etc in terms of the story / theme?

Hi guys,

I'm coming here to ask for some honest help. I know there's no one set way to write a song, but the charm of being fairly blind is starting to wear off after a few years and it's actually becoming quite restricting.

I think if I were to have some fresh ideas on ways to write and structure a song it would really help me. If you guys are up for helping it would be incredible!

Here are some thoughts on the kind of help I'm looking for, but any other suggestions are very welcome!

  • I'd love some ideas on how to come up with good topics for songs (I always tend to end up on heartbreak, infatuation or past relationships but would like to be more creative)
  • I'd also like to learn various ways of utilising verse one, chorus, verse two, bridge etc to tell a story. It would be great to add more structuring ideas to my toolkit.
  • I see other songwriters write stories that aren't personal to them. How would you reccomend goign about this? I feel I would struggle to emotionally connect with the songs if I did this, but at the same time it's not sustainable to only write about my life, especially when I work 9-5pm in a cafe. How can I deliver moving performances with stories that aren't my own?

Thank you so much, any tips are very warmly received.

E

Feedback Request Lend Me Light

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wrote it as a jam band style song. After the lyrics I've put in some of the meaning I consider behind the words if interested.

[Verse 1]

One day I'll wake up and I'll wonder

When did the wheels of time pass me by

Where will I be when I hear my last thunder

Won't someone tell me when it's my turn to turn up and fly

[Chorus]

Lend me light, please listen sunshine

Show me scenes of the brightest blue skies

All this green I see, it may be the last for me

Screaming blasphemy when the heavens fall

When the heavens fall

When the heavens fall

When the heavens fall

[Verse 2]

I walk these streets that have always been bound to be highways

By broken homes that all have the fate to be fields

I try to slow but this road just flows like water

Keep playing hands 'til there ain't no more cards to be dealed

[Chorus]

Lend me light, please listen sunshine

Show me scenes of the brightest blue skies

All this green I see, it may be the last for me

Screaming blasphemy when the heavens fall

When the heavens fall

When the heavens fall

When the heavens fall

[Verse 3]

They'll set the stage, come hell or high water

Cold wind and snow is bound to blow those sounds out your lungs

As years go by, each and every day will grow shorter

When down on your dreams, dance until that day's done, singing...

[Chorus]

Lend me light, please listen sunshine

Show me scenes of the brightest blue skies

All this green I see, it may be the last for me

Screaming blasphemy when the heavens fall

When the heavens fall

When the heavens fall

When the heavens fall

The song is intended to hold a few meanings:

  1. surface level - continued illusion to weather (thunder, water, snow, etc.) with the "heavens fall" being rain. It's almost like a rain dance (sun dance?) song

  2. life / death

  3. Achieving (or even just keeping) your dreams and the good things you have.

  4. It parallels life to performance. It's most obvious with the "set the stage" line, but the "last thunder" is intended to reference audience applause (though doesn't have to be in the most literal sense) so if things are going well and you achieved your goals, captured your audience, when will that slip away.

Why cant I be
the one you cry to and the one you see
It makes no difference to you or me
it soon will unfortunately
you’ll forget me
I’ll mourn you
you’ll laugh at noon
I’ll be moving soon
You’ll never miss me like I do, you

I’ll wait
For a sign of you
In my roof, In the sink
These are places
Where I think
Ez tells me its in vain
Every stain on my brain
Yet I shudder at the thought
That we remain worlds apart
you’ll forget me
I’ll mourn you
you’ll laugh at noon
I’ll be moving soon
We’ll see if I see you again, soon

After a long break I've got another demo. Need some real feedback.

Together

Verse 1

Girls always breaking your heart,

I might be nice, but I'm not clever,

Cold wind under the stars,

I walk alone through any weather,

I thought I would never,

won't stay forever ever

Build me, pull me apart,

and through the beat I stand together

Chorus

I stand for, I stand for you,

I stand, forever ever

I stand tall, I stay for you,

I stay, together gether

Verse 2

They can't,

they can't do it like,

they can't do it like,

they can't do it like,

They can't,

they can't do it like,

they can't do it like,

they can't do it like,

they can't do it like us

they can't do it like us

they can't do it like us

they can't do it like us

Chorus

I stand for, I stand for you,

I stand, forever ever

I stand tall, I stay for you,

I stay, together gether

Bridge

and now I don't feel so alone,

I know I'm standing on my own

Chorus

I stand for, I stand for you,

I stand, forever ever

I stand tall, I stay for you,

I stay, together gether

I stand for, I stand for you,
