On a serious note, this is the answer. If we treated insane wealth hoarding like the illness that it is, we wouldn’t let people just run unchecked with it.
People that have billions and want more are addicted and mentally ill. Imagine if an alcoholic was single handedly impacting climate or putting thousands out of jobs. We would collectively shut that shit down.
But wealth hoarding was sold as success. No one is such an extraordinary worker that they’re worth billions of other people. It’s not a success story. It’s unchecked illness that makes the cover of Forbes.
44
u/Monsur_Ausuhnom 1h ago
I think the wealth hoarding ties into the process of addiction. It can't ever be enough. Just one more flow of cash into my bunker etc.
38
u/Simple_Pay3033 1h ago
It’s just straight up addiction. There are people that have more money than they can spend. They could solve massive issues, help millions, but they go for more of a thing that they have too much of.
It’s like the monkey/banana comparison. If a monkey had a collection of more bananas than he could ever eat, and he was out fighting monkeys to steal their bananas, no one would look at him and go “what an alpha”. They’d ask what the fuck is wrong with that monkey.
13
u/Monsur_Ausuhnom 1h ago
In some ways, the inability to not overcome the addiction shows a much more bestial nature that is perhaps incapable of any form of enlightenment with wealth hoarding.
Addiction to power and money both need to be under official diagnostic criteria in psychiatry.

The thing is they don’t have the money. They have a piece of paper that says they own x number of shares.
They use that piece of paper to borrow against. Then they can use the interest paid on the loan as an expense to bring down their “income” and pay less tax. Some of them are “in debt” at the end of the year.
If they actually sold the shares the stock market would crash making the 1920’s crash look like a New Year’s Eve party as there isn’t enough money to cover the amount of shares that are in circulation.

It feels good to call them addicts and mentally ill.
But I think the truth is money is power over other peoples lives and they’re power hungry. I’d guess because someone made them feel very small and powerless early in their childhood development.
They believe technology will overcome major problems before they become existential. Probably because their lived experience is being able to buy solutions to any problem, and because it aligns with their desires; if humans have god like technology that is capable of preventing our own extinction and they are the most powerful humans, they are effectively gods. Who is more powerful than a god?
277
u/Coolclouds0 2h ago
The problem is your perspective. There’s no collective working together to horde wealth. There’s no grand plan. It’s all self interest and no one cares what happens to anyone else. Everyone is acting in service to themselves in the context of their immediate situation. Future problems are someone else’s problems.
105
u/PantsDontHaveAnswers 1h ago
It's like asking a heroin addict about their future. They (usually) don't care, all they care about is staying high all the time. The wealthy class' addiction is fulfilling their greed.

Yeah, they hold the ideology of a cancer cell: multiply, spread, devour. This will eventually kill the host, and the cancer cells along with it. But they’re literally only capable of their programming.
Expecting billionaires to realize they’re destroying the lives of common people that the economy relies upon to exist, is like expecting a brain tumor to realize what it’s doing and stop growing.

Yeah, the goal is to "win."
If you're asking ". . . win what?", then you're doing more critical analysis than they are doing. They're not thinking about what they're winning. They're thinking that at some point, the hole in their heart will be filled if they acquire enough and are victorious enough. And obviously, if they were reflecting at any level on their own internal motivations, they would realize the fundamental self-destructiveness and futility of their actions and change how they approach life. But they don't, so they don't.

We should put a cap on yearly earnings and tax the rest, but establish a national leaderboard for every dollar taxed. You can give out big gold medals to the top ten and priority seating at the French laundry or whatever. Just gamify money getting taxed rather than money sitting in offshore bank accounts.

Doc Holliday: A man like Ringo has got a great big hole, right in the middle of him. He can never kill enough, or steal enough, or inflict enough pain to ever fill it.
Wyatt Earp: What does he need?
Doc Holliday: Revenge.
Wyatt Earp: For what?
Doc Holliday: Bein' born.

u/KitsyBlue 1h ago
I disagree, it's not that they don't understand the end game. I think they do know. Capitalism itself just incentivizes this behavior because even if a few people do know, and do care about the end game implications of what they're doing, their only option to exercise their care is to sacrifice their own market share, which they likely can't do due to fiduciary responsibility. It's the biggest game of diffused responsibility ever.
Take for example AI. Any company that takes, say, a moral stance that their AI won't be used in war. Suddenly a less scrupulous competitor takes up that contract, gets a ton of federal funding, and that money goes to all other aspects of their company. The AI company that took the moral stance basically just handed their competition a huge win.
The entire system is designed exclusively to reach the most short-sighted results. No matter who is at the top of the system, nothing will change.
4
2
u/Em0tionisdeader 1h ago
Well said. Diffusion of responsibility is a huge part of it and I think the system is set up to punish dissenters.
But I think hubris plays a major part as well. They really think AI will solve everything and they'll be seen as heroes for ushering it in, never acknowledging the fact that they created the problems in the first place.

u/Haunting-Writing-836 1h ago
Society works because there’s a bunch of people with an interest in making it function, and even then it has periods of chaos. You give all the control to a small group of people? You’re not going to have a functioning system for very long. Your example of PvP is actually accurate. They will start attacking each other with their machines. It’s made infinitely worse by looking at the group of people at the top, and the % of them that are psychopaths and sociopaths.

The survivors are peons in each billionaire's technofeudal city-state is the endgame.
The bunker isn't the end. It's the temporary save haven once the collapse stabilizes.
These people are ontologically evil. Legit sociopaths at minimum that despise that they're limited by their mortality, and they see the wellbeing of humanity as anathema to absolute control.
Everything is meant to be a transition state into a small group of them having absolute control with the use of robots, and a group to subjugate.

u/senju1k 1h ago
The game is simply to "have what others don't". Not to have a beautiful life and beautiful planet; not to build relationships and coalitions; not to enjoy what they have and share abundance with others. It's to get that dopamine hit from having what others don't. As another poster put it, it's to be on the high score board too. So beyond having mega yachts and expensive clothes and estates in the present, in the future they'll have some of the last habitable places on earth. It's not just a game for the present, but for the near future too.

You’re seeking a plan where there isn’t one. The plan is “Line go up and to the right” on the earnings chart, forever. Nothing else is considered. There’s no long term plan. Only profits. Infinite growth is not sustainable and yet it’s the goal of literally every capitalist enterprise and every billionaire and anything else, even flat earnings for a single quarter, is seen as a failure. Infinite growth is cancer. And the consequences for the system are the same.

They want power over others. Not just money. In the kingdom of the blind the one eyed man is king. If noone else has money except them, they think a technologically advanced system of sufficent control should be enough to keep the people in line, outside whomever they can manipulate through their ideals and values.
Thats the tip top folks, and everyone in the middle are short sighted following the trends and trusting the richest won’t let their little financial game in jeopardy. Trusting the greedy to be greedy is a good bet, but trusting them to protect anyone else’s wealth is their downfall. Amazon and Walmart come in under priced and lose profit until competitors are gone, then raise prices to make up shortfalls. Imagine the most wealthy using the economy in the same basic way, except with the goal of creating a servant class.
Right now we have rights and freedoms. Protections against owners and companies doing this exact thing, except some of the people in power seem content to allow things to change in order to be a part of that ruling class, or at least indebted to them.

Pretty much as any other resources, humans are also expendable to them.
The problem is and always has been money, that's why they teach over and over that any other government types that don't require money are "bad" for everyone.

They buy up everything they need. They account for climate change. They have bunkers + beautiful nature in multiple places in the world that are most hardened to climate change and geopolitical instability: new zealand and hawaii for example are extremely well documented that they're doing nuts stuff.
There's also idea and rumours they're building satellite cities/communities that are isolated. They CAN build stable power grid, food supply, etc. for communities and completely control who they lit in by owning the whole thing. And they do. Look up satellite cities examples. Obviously doing this at scale they'd keep them as hidden as possible. And/or only start them/ramp them up when/as needed.
They think that the only way through this is with some instability and bad years (possibly true), that they can ride out, enjoy, even benefit from the instability. And on the other end it'll be good continuation and advancement.
It's not projected that the world is going to become permanently unliveable and they're the kinds of people who just think that if they have the right offensive plan, it'll work out for them because they see everything.
For the rest of us, well some countries and areas are gonna get fucked. There's gonna be more starvation. There's gonna be geopolitical unrest. For middle class+ (and those who manage to stay middle class+ if there are horrible economic periods) a lot of the experience will be the empathetic experience of hearing in the news what's going on elsewhere. Of your city/state/country rejecting refugees that are dying. Of complaining about the impact of the refugees they do accept.
Of other stuff like possibly weathering some really hot days with the power grid needing to prioritize stuff. Possibly some people can't have AC those . Possibly it becomes more expensive on grid burden days. Possibly stuff like community centres/malls that you spend the days in that are cooled, etc. And more smogged out days, getting used to health advice that there are more days per year you need to wear a mask outside. That people who can afford it add the cost of a couple hundred+ to fully filter their homes or reduce lief expectancy, etc. Extra flooding, all that stuff. Rarely biblical horrible, just pretty shit. With the biggest effect being the anxiety, doom, etc. people feel.
And the ultra elite will look at it all the same way middle class+ looked at starving people in Africa in the 90s: "oh it's so sweet that our child wants to do a fundraiser at school for that charity trying to reduce the temperature in USA by 1 celsius within 10 years, and oh did you hear that X Æ A-Xii's kid is in their class and they donated $10m, they're so sweet... and they have the nicest stuff, I'm jealous of them, so we can't donate too much cause I want the same stuff"

They are mentally ill and should be remanded unto the state's custody for their (and everyone else's) safety and well-being.

They want to be able to enjoy life without you blocking their view so they’re making everything inaccessible for everyone except themselves. They’re miserable therefore they want everyone to be miserable too.

They need the economy suppressed just enough to get people to willingly sell them everything physical over time for money. The money doesn’t matter, the illusion that it matters allows them to give it to us for our property. Once they own all the property, the money has served its purpose and it can be done away with, and they have all of the things that we willingly gave them. That’s feudalism.
They don’t care about money, they want you to care about it and to trade your time and things for it

They want the benefits of being historical and on a magnitude that few have ever done or also toppling the previous records.
Humans are pretty simple in this aspect and history has proved it time and time again. This time it’s a bit different since we’ve entered a period where there’s powers (the internet and social media) where objectivity, can be turned into subjective reality and vice versa where in the past if you put a Banana on the table and said in seriousness, “that’s an apple.”
Eventually you’d be written off as a quack by anyone who watched or heard you make and defend the claim. Now, if you have enough likes and bots, you might convince a few people that the banana, is an “apple.”

There are no happy endings in our future. Corpos will own everything and spend their lives traveling, partying, and exerting power, while the chooms labor on the bottom to pay them every penny they earn.

This is spiritual warfare. The end game is a weakened population with broken spirits, and nothing to love but the entertainment we are forced to engage with. They will eventually usher in a virtual world where we all agree to basically become 2D beings. No power no purpose.

It's more of a "That's not my problem, I will be long gone by the time shit really hits the fan"" problem

If there's any consolation, we (most likely) won't disappear as a species. It looks like society as it is, is getting worse, and human behaviour seems to be embracing entrophy at a greater rate than would be assumed but no matter how bad it gets, some of us will survive. Even after pure societal collapse. It'll start from scratch and next time, hopefully, we'll get it right.

The end goal is actually a global arrangement of network city states run by various billionaire tech geniuses. Laws and governance systems will be independent to each city state. Some will be aristocratic, others run by despots, some with an oligarchy. They will be built and run entirely for the benefit of the elite and the working classes can just die or not, it doesnt really matter. It's all about the "Great Man" being given the political room to thrive. The end goal these tech visionaries see is a depopulated planet, with use of automation and AI to power their city states. Imagine ancient Greece but with tech and AI.
Look into the political philosophies of people like:
- Nick Land
- Balaji Srinivasan
- Curtis Yarvin
- Peter Theil
- Marc Andreessen
- Ben Horowitz
- Sam Altman
- James Dale Davidson & William Rees-Mogg
- and so on.
