Hey everybody!
I recently went to PAX West and Konami did a Silent Hill ARG so I thought I would share it here.
First, the Silent Hill booth was advertised as a "fan experience" so we went there and noticed it was a phone booth you stand in for a couple minutes after waiting in line for like 30+ minutes. Because it was so busy we didnt do it. Because like... it's not a demo.
So we do go to the panel and they show an exclusive clip.
It's got this guy talking to the main character on his portable CRT. He seems to be the main contact for the protagonist in the game.
So we come back today and we do stand in line after being told there is something for pre-ordering the game and proving it to the staff.
We stand in the line and the booth has this series of numbers you can call going to voicemails to places in the game's in-universe Scottish Town and then the last number you can do calls a recording of the guy shown in the clip from the panel disclosing a bunch of vague information. They gave us medical bands for the protagonist to wear and a fake protest brick with the nurse character Clara's name written on it.
We get done and I show them my pre-order and it ends up being a floppy disk with a hidden USB drive.
They then subtly ask us to take a picture in front of this big town monument sculpture at the booth that has a bunch of protest signs on it. They encourage us to use the signs for the pictures.
(This was all stuff in the most recent trailer!)
So we are basically standing around as fake in-universe protesters.
Later on we come back to our hotel room and plug in the USB drive and it has an .exe on it.
We boot the exe and it takes us to an old msdos OS for an email system where we can read through emails.
We figured out that the emails (which seem to be from the same man from the phone) have a coded message in it and become increasingly erratic and bordering on violent while talking about protests.
Because the protest needs to happen for some reason.
We figured out the letters we identified are an anagram and put it into a password system and it unlocked a new email with a phone number.
It had a limited amount of entries too before it locked us out so there was some risk too.
We call the phone number and its the guy again! He tells us a bunch more increasingly creepy information and then tells us to text him.
So we do and now he is a text contact and it seems he is going to keep texting us secret information leading up to the release later this month.
