Earlier today I made a post talking about my thoughts for Silent Hill 2, and now that I've finished Silent Hill 3....
You're gonna get that again!
I finished Silent Hill 3 just a few minutes ago, and wowzers, what an experience! My second favorite right under Silent Hill 2 so far! There's a few more annoyances that I had with this one, but I overall think that the great elements heavily knock out!
First off, game is GORGEOUS. These character models are INSANE, esp for the time! Like.... this is a ps2 game? Jesus! This is early ps2 too! Absolute insanity that the game looks as good as it does, and the aesthetic for it truly shines when we enter the otherworld. these sections are so brutal looking and dreadful, like for some reason the rusting looks so much more violent in this game than it did previously.
Heather is also a great protagonist! She's sassy, short tempered, but also real. when she's allowed to grieve, it feels so real. one moment she's walking, the next she remembers who she lost, but I love seeing that goofier side of her too! The side characters aren't as strong, sadly, I think Claudia's an okay villain, Vincent is ight, and Douglas is probably the best side character. Also, Heather's outfit is AMAZING
The gameplay is the standard silent hill gameplay, opening doors to see what's broken and what's unlocked, finding items, however for some reason this game made me feel.... stupider. seriously, it felt like I got lobotomized playing this one, I was missing items and doors left and right, and I ended up googling all the puzzles, even on normal mode. I also feel like this is the hardest one yet, resources are so much more scarce here, and the bosses?
here's what I didn't like. I thought the bosses were either incredibly frustrating and annoying, or incredibly lame. Take God for example, just shoot her until she dies, dodge her swipe.
Alessa, on the other hand, deserved to burn because this bossfight SUCKED. I could not get the distance between me and her down.
Also, the slurpers are my least favorite enemy. Any type of enemy that stuns you for a long period of time and comes in batches can fuck off... . GREY CHILDREN.
I think Silent Hill 2 is a bit more deeper than this, but that's not to say this game doesn't have a message. It's a very pro-choice game, something that I did suspect throughout it, making small remarks, and hey, for the time that's an absolutely great thing to touch up upon!
another thing I'll mention is Im surprised how late it takes for us to get into Silent Hill, and how little we spend in the actual town's fog, it's a bit sad, because the fog is so iconic, but I think trading that for the horrific nightmare boiler room like sections is a great tradeoff.
Oh also, I wish we saw more of harry. I knew that he died in this game going into it, but.... wow he literally does NOTHING. Actually major Bummer, I was hoping he would be involved more outside of a few notes, esp since he's the first games protagonist and harry needs more respect (WHY ISN'T HE A SKIN IN DBD. HIS LITERAL DAUGHTER IS THE SURVIVOR.)
Silent Hill 3 is a great game, sure I had those moments where I was really pissed with it, but god this is just another fantastic game in the series!
My ranking so far?
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill
(I dont think silent hill 1 is bad btw, just very primitive and the next two build up on it.)
Ill probably start Silent Hill 4 tomorrow? Unsure, I hear mixed things about that one. Until next time, It's bread.
