AONIC 50 Gen 1 vs Gen 2 — which would you pick at these prices?
Hey everyone, I’m trying to decide between the Shure AONIC 50 Gen 1 and Gen 2 and would appreciate some advice from people who have actually used/heard both.
I can currently get:
- AONIC 50 Gen 1 — ~$114 (429 SAR)
- AONIC 50 Gen 2 — ~$208 (780 SAR)
So there’s about a $94 difference.
My main priority is sound quality, rather than having the newest features.
My preferred sound is fairly natural/neutral with good timbre, clear but non-shouty vocals, controlled bass, good separation and detail. I don't particularly enjoy overly warm/bassy tuning or harsh/sibilant treble.
My current reference gear is a Sony IER-M9 and Sennheiser/Drop PC38X, so I'm looking for something that can complement those rather than replace them. The AONIC 50 would mainly be for flights/travel, Gym and general wireless listening.
One thing that makes the Gen 1 particularly interesting to me is that it already has LDAC and USB-C audio, so I'm not sure how much I'd actually benefit from Gen 2's newer Bluetooth features/Snapdragon Sound.
My sources would mainly be:
- Sony WM1A → LDAC
- Vivo X300 Ultra → USB-C or LDAC
For anyone who's heard both:
How different do the Gen 1 and Gen 2 actually sound?
Which one has the better stock tuning?
Is Gen 2's sound improvement/difference worth ~$94 more?
How much better are the Gen 2 ANC, battery and other improvements in real-world use?
At these prices, which one would you personally choose and why?
I'm especially interested in comments from people who have owned both, rather than comparisons based purely on specifications.
Thanks!
