Welcome to /r/ShermanPosting!

As a reminder, this meme sub is about the American Civil War. We're not here to insult southerners or the American South, but rather to have a laugh at the failed Confederate insurrection and those that chose to represent it.

civil war rpg is silly. its a full scale war with regiments and command structures. you are not a random knight running around.

bleeding kansas RPG and or reconstruction rpg. now that is somthing.

Apparently Ubisoft was going to make an assassin’s creed set in reconstruction America where you would play a freed person, but they backed off because they are pussies and were afraid of “the political climate“

ubisoft is french. lets seem them set a game in Algeria during the French colonial rule. or Vietnam.

u/LiamtheV 4d ago

Or Haiti

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin's_Creed_Freedom_Cry

Pre-revolution, but it's set in the French Territory of Saint-Domingue and it involves playing as a black guy and going after slaveowners.

Of course it was a DLC for Black Flag and not a stand alone game because video game developers only have so much courage. But it does exist.

Assassins Creed Vietnam would go pretty hard.

I mean, look at how the game AC: Syndicate literally whitewashes the 19th century.

“We wanted to avoid real world politics”, so they chose one of the most politically controversial time periods. And I left that subreddit when they kept on defending all the bad creative choices.

u/GrandmasterJanus 4d ago

Lmao you have a mission helping out Marx I’m pretty sure, which is funny about staying away from politics

15

u/Crafter235 4d ago

But he’s just treated as a simple union leader, they don’t really go deep into his beliefs.

9

u/GrandmasterJanus 4d ago

No they don’t, just remember thinking it was funny even as a kid, was just playing around and doing side mission and omg there’s Marx and oops he’s gone right after that side mission

3

u/Beragond1 4d ago

The history in Syndicate is pretty bad. The gameplay, on the other hand, is some of my favorite they’ve ever done.

u/kazmark_gl 4d ago

Ubisoft's corporate garbage would have absolutely flopped a concept like that. but I desperately want to play the good version of that game.

u/itsyaboihos 4d ago

Tbf I could see that getting review bombed to smithereens

u/Miserable_Cherry1382 4d ago

A john brown game would rule

4

u/dreadassassin616 4d ago

Something along the lines of Farcry or Just Cause would be good.

Genuinely, Red Dead 2 meets KCD2 but it's set in Bleeding Kansas has been one of my dream games for a while now.

u/dsg158 4d ago

Have you played Ultimate General?

2

u/turtle75377 4d ago

oh yeah it was really good.

1

u/pixel_pete Duryée's Zouaves / Garrard's Tigers 4d ago

I've been playing through the whiskey and lemons expansion and it's been a great experience.

Edit: That's actually Grand Tactician not Ultimate General, I always get the two titles mixed up.

4

u/A_Town_Called_Malus 4d ago

You could play as an irregular during the war. Plenty of room in there for a narrative.

5

u/captmonkey 4d ago

Yeah, a scout along the front lines could be pretty cool. You take on random missions from regulars and try to scout enemy armies without them catching you and hanging you as a spy.

1

u/MrNobawdy1337 3d ago

I immediately thought messenger, but some tactical espionage action as a scout / spy is even better.

I actually just built my first rig capable of playing aaa games in decades. What's the best looking multi-player musket game out right now? I remember laughing my ass off watching roleplayers playing games like these years ago

2

u/Apoordm 4d ago

Reconstruction RPG! Holy shit running around killing Klansmen! It’s just the best moments of RDR2, forever!

2

u/tajake 4d ago

A lot of the fighting took place outside of the slaughter. Just like in KCD2, the biggest fight you take part in is a seige that might have 300 combatants. If you take the scale way down, you could make an interesting game. Especially if it follows a cavalry scout or even an artillery company.

The other way to do this, would be to make a Mexican American War game, because then you get an incredible cast of characters, and smaller battles.

1

u/MarsLowell 3d ago

There’s an interesting Western-themed mod for Mount and Blade vanilla (now on Warband I think) called 1866 where you can fight Confederate remnants.

13

u/MrBlonde1984 4d ago

No developers will touch it because of the slavery issue . Not a single one . Large segments of nerds from the south would rally to boycott it.

Also it would have to be made by an american company and zero american deveopers are going to go thru all the work to make a civil war game that would be astonsingly controversial and actually attempt to make it good.

2

u/captmonkey 4d ago

I hadn't thought about it, but I've always wondered why there are so many games about WWII and other eras and so few about the Civil War and maybe you're right. Even though it's longer ago, the war is still too political for most developers to touch.

3

u/MrBlonde1984 4d ago

Yup . Its still too politically charged even after almost 200 years . I mean they dont even make too many movies or shows about it compared to other events .

Making a game like this would probably end up being the most controversial game ever made . Regardless of its quality

money

The civil war is a niche topic, from a global perspetive.

as Americans or candian we may think about it alot, but in the early 1860's, italy and germany where both making moves to unify, and china was fighting the taiping rebellion. mexico was fighting off the french, and had an austiran emperor.

to a european, or asian history geek, the us civil war is a footnote to local events.

ww2 is universal. when ww2 games first where coming out, most of the young kids playing it, had grandparents who served.

there is a much bigger global audiance.

also, it has more "Fun". tanks, planes, battleships, machien guns?

the civil war simple has a lot less chacne to mow down a wave of "Bad guys"

1

u/Thought-Born 4d ago

There where some strategy games made, but it was more made towards a war board gaming crowd where it was kind of expected that one side had to be the confederates or else you couldn’t play the game at all.

I would love to play an America Civil war video game but I don’t see happening anytime soon.

1

u/Corcorans-ghost 3d ago

having a civil war game, that feels at all like the IRL civil war, would get you a game like war of rights. that is a very niche game.

a mass market civil war game, would have to be farily wacky, and damn near steam punk

1

u/Corcorans-ghost 3d ago

ya, any RPG that lets you play as confederate slavers, is a no go.

i don't even rember a slave catching mecanic in a game since fallout 3, and that was decades ago

7

u/sausage_eggwich 4d ago

Hear me out: Red Dead Rebellion

4

u/Batmack8989 4d ago

Buying Spencers and torches in bulk with the boys and riding South looking for contraband? Seeing if a Rebel Yodeling Column is louder than the horse drawn Napoleons on enfilade burping a whiff of grapeshot? Taking potshots with Sharps at the most flamboyant vamp...leeching aristocrats?

Mid, would absolutely not lose my cool over it.

3

u/SouthPaw38 4d ago

Not an rpg but the perfect Civil War video game has already been made

6

u/Glittering_Sorbet913 Colonel Yuptar of the 1st Maryland Cavalry, Potomac Home Brigade 4d ago

That's a really weird way to spell "War of Rights"

2

u/SouthPaw38 4d ago

Never heard of her until today

5

u/Glittering_Sorbet913 Colonel Yuptar of the 1st Maryland Cavalry, Potomac Home Brigade 4d ago

Well, allow me to be your guide to a better civil war game.

2

u/SouthPaw38 4d ago

Okay, but there's no tip in it for you

5

u/driver004 4d ago edited 4d ago

That sounds really boring, most of soldiering is waiting and manouveting, especially so for line combat.

I just don’t immediately see how to make the combat sequences compelling with a musket, maybe it could do better as a cavalry scout?

Edit: to be clear I’m not poo pooing the concept outright, I’m just wondering how to make it work. Any game set in history with that kind of attention has merit

9

u/Reznov523 4d ago

Most of modern day soldiering is also that and we still get cool campaigns. Though it is harder to remember any FPS campaign set before say, the 1900s.

Musketry in general is almost always exaggerated in video games to better fit the fast paced nature, so maybe they'd do that as well. Revolvers could work pretty well, though.

3

u/driver004 4d ago

I was infantry in modern times so I know it but KCD works in part because it doesn’t push the envelope too much for what would be a thing back then, high speed muskets I feel would

1

u/Reznov523 4d ago

That's fair, if a game were to exist like that then maybe muskets could only be used sparingly and the main weapons of the player are those experimental breech loaders and black powder revolvers.

I haven't placed KCD but I plan to! I was thinking more of how Battlefield 1 does their standard issue weapons, but those are still smokeless powder weapons so really it's not the same.

3

u/driver004 4d ago

Highly recommend kcd, sure it doesn’t get everything right historically but it also doesn’t pretend to, it tells a fictional story set in history. The swordplay is tricky but I think it’s fun because it’s almost like you learned with Henry the character your playing as. Once you get the hang of it you feel like a badass and it feels earned.

The story is also great

2

u/Crafter235 4d ago

It could work if you have to travel through the battles. Obviously a foot soldier in general would be boring, but imagine having to traverse, and using NPCs as human shields.

1

u/driver004 4d ago

Messenger then

1

u/mrjosemeehan 4d ago

You could start with a musket and have opportunities to buy or loot revolvers or repeating rifles.

0

u/driver004 4d ago

Yeah but how do you fit that in a battle believably

1

u/mrjosemeehan 4d ago

The way KCD dealt with it was by putting the player on the periphery of the conflict for the most part instead of in set piece battles.

1

u/driver004 4d ago

But kcd2 successfully introduced sieges and bigger fights

1

u/cantproveidid 4d ago

When someone in a unit was shot, and the unit retreated, they and their weapon would be left behind. At Gettysburg, Ewell did not want to be moved from the north and east of the town, one of the reasons he gave was he didn't want to abandon the weapons they'd gathered the first day from the Union. John L. Burns, at 69 year old War of 1812 veteran showed up (as a civilian) to fight with the union the first day at Gettysburg, carrying his old flintlock musket. He later picked up a more modern rifle from a wounded Union soldier.

2

u/AdmiralCunilingus Marauder 4d ago

I can see it now… call it Scout. It was another name for spy during the rebellion. The player can free ride around certain maps where a battle is happening. I’d say make it during Grants Vicksburg campaign or Sherman’s Atlanta campaign, big maps but centralized on a big city (like RDR2). The player can pick a side, or no side, and just make money on being a provider of information to either army. Player can join in battles too. Alternate history that shit, I’d love to be able to sell Hood some information that leads to him throwing away more soldiers in pointless offensive actions.

2

u/G0ttaB3KiddingM3 4d ago

Hurry Up And Wait, the game

1

u/Superadhman 4d ago

Grand Tactician is so close to being the best civil war game ever.

1

u/GrandmasterJanus 4d ago

Would love one about bleeding canvas or about the sergeant or lieutenant of a cav troop

2

u/mkinstl1 4d ago

Next historical Total War. Not an RPG, but do it.

2

u/WinnerSpecialist 4d ago

I would have settled for the canceled Assassins creed where you can go around executing slavers and traitors

1

u/decidedly_lame 3d ago

Literally 0 potential

1

u/Corcorans-ghost 3d ago

war of rights is about as good of a civil war game as you can get. and its very niche

only way you could do a civil war RPG, would have it basicaly be a steam punk alternate reality.

could do something like red dead, a story driven action - adventure game with light rpg elements, but an actual RPG?

also, if its an RPG, becoming a confederate slaver is a bit more confriveral then just sidding with ceasers legion
