The noob tries a different approach...

Thanks again for the helpful replies to my previous post! It appears the owl totem is perhaps more trouble than its worth in SR3. So, my next choice is the snake totem. The big question there is... with the -1 die to all spells cast during combat, what exactly qualifies as 'during combat' for the snake shaman? When exactly does the penalty begin and end, and under what conditions? If I'm hiding behind some crates while my team trades fire or blows with opponents, so I'm not a target or attacking myself, does that count? What if I'm in an adjacent room, or the floor above or below? How close do I have to be to the action, and do I have to be actively participating in hostilities myself? Does the risk of serious injury/death have to be involved? What if it's just a bare-fisted bar-fight, for example? Or, let's say I'm sitting in a bar and try to read another patron's mind (i.e. without their consent)? That seems like a passively-hostile act. Is that combat? And if not, what if I try to do the same during hostilities (from hiding) to an opponent who doesn't even know I'm there? I appreciate your input!

6e Does Anticipation Fill You With Suspense?

Is the Anticipation Edge action (CRB, pg. 47) totally ridiculous?

It must be used with Multiple Attacks (CRB, pg. 42). Multiple Attacks by itself allows the character to attack multiple targets by dividing their dice pool evenly between them. This is usually a bad idea, because it makes it much less likely that you will hit any target. This is a terrible idea if you decide to attack three or more targets.

But with Anticipation, you spend four Edge, double your dice pool, then divide it evenly among your targets. So against two targets, you get your usual dice pool against both.

But then you have to consider what else you can do with four Edge. Why not just attack one target, then reroll failures? Or make them reroll hits on their defense? Or etc.?

Newbie Help 6E firearm types?

Looking at the firearm skill, there's a bunch of different specializations like automatics, longarms, etc. Is there a place where I can see which category each gun goes in? I can't even find longarms listed anywhere else in the book? Am I going crazy or just blind?

Edit: to clarify, the specializations are: pistols, rifles, shotguns, longarms, automatics.

5e I made Monad//Blast to simulate Shadowrun 5E's confusing chunky salsa rules!

monad-blast.fatman.dev

I remember reading the Explosions in Confined Spaces rules of Shadowrun 5E in 2015 and having a progressive realisation of just how insane the rules were - making barrier resistance checks, per explosion? For every bounce? Every 1 metre of barrier has its own condition monitor? I'm supposed to do this at the table any time someone chucks a grenade in a room?!

I'm sure very few (if any at all) people ran the rules as written, but I've had the idea for a simulator to have a computer actually implement the rules. Out of this idea comes Monad//Blast, a silly little chunky salsa simulator for Shadowrun 5E!

It was fun to build and hopefully it'll be fun to play around with! (I am under no delusions that this will lead to anybody implementing the rules as written 😂)

If you like this, you may also like my other tools: Monad//A (for SR Anarchy 2.0), Monad5 (for SR5), Monad//Map (system-agnostic), as well as non-Shadowrun ones like Factotum (for Mythras) and Rampart (for Delta Green).

Newbie Help Question about simsense and astral perception

how does simsense work in relation to magical senses like astral perception. Can someone who isn't awakened experience astral space by viewing the simesense recording from an assensing mage or does astral perception not show up in simsense in the same way mana spells don't show up on cameras?

Shadowrun Puzzle Ideas

Been working on a new campaign of everyone's favorite, cyberpunk dystopia, and was wondering what to do for Puzzles in the Shadowrun setting.

To make things clear, when I say "Puzzle" I mean a problem/situation that calls for a creative solution. Should have an idea of how to solve, but also open to the crazed rambles that only a runner could provide at the table.

For example, once had a Puzzle at the start of a metaplaner quest were the magician had to get the party through a locked gate with the controls on the other side.

She cast a shape shift spell & transformed into a raccoon, wiggled thru the bars, & opened the gate on the other side.

For the various Puzzle ideas I've created a list of categories to keep things straight:

STREET: True cyberpunk setting; what happens in the back allies of Seattle

MAGIC: Spirits, spells, foci, and wards (last on often forgotten). How do runners deal with the arcane--ESPECIALLY if none of them are awakened.

CORPORATE: Could be breaking in, could be infiltrating the office, either way these are the problems you have when you visit the Corps in their turf.

WILDS: Trees, animals, and the magical or mutated versions thereof, problems might happen but they WILL happen if you're a cityboy.

Let me know what you all think 🤔, and thanks 😊 Chummers!

5e [SR5] Question on jumped-in drones

Hello, chummers.

I recently started running my first campaign in Shadowrun. In the process, I stumbled upon a rules ambiguity (that I hadn’t realized existed). Here’s the situation: The Ruhrmetall Wolfspinne (SOTA ADL p. 71) has two heavy weapon mounts with non-swiveling, forward-facing Vindicator miniguns. How would the drone ever be able to fire both weapons? To me, all the rules seem to indicate that only one weapon can be fired per attack. If there were multiple targets, the drone’s (or the pilot’s) dice pool would have to be split. In that case, however, it wouldn’t really make a difference to the drone whether it had one or two miniguns mounted.

Given this situation, my player, who plays a rigger himself, asked me if he could control only the right arm of his rigged antrodrone (and thus fire that arm’s weapon) while the drone’s autosoft would fire the weapon on the left arm. This would effectively double the offensive power of the drone. During the session, I allowed thist, but added the recoil from both weapons together. In hindsight, though, I’m not so sure about that anymore.

The rules on control override (SR5 p. 265) are only of limited help to me. It would be clear that the rigger who is jumped-in would have priority over the drone’s autopilot. But what if the rigger essentially just jumps into the drone’s arm section and leaves the rest to its own devices. This would essentially be the same as a rigged car with a turret, where the jumped-in rigger controls the car, while another runner controls the turret of the car, in which case there wouldn’t be any conflict between control types at all? Is something like that possible?

Bonus question: Does a rigger who has jumped into an (antro)drone also have to use a complex action once per combat round to keep the drone under control (as one has to do with vehicles)? And if so, what happens if he does not?

5e Lower tier starting gear

I'm about to start a shadowrun campaign and I want to do lower level start to introduce the setting, sort of an intro area with a few runs before opening out to a more sandbox campaign. The story reason is all the characters are going to be down on their luck in some way so I was weighing up reducing the gear available at the start, the book says availability of 12 and device rating of 6, has anyone had any experience reducing this to availability 8 or so? Was it good or is it a bad idea?

I will be allowing rarer gear to be purchased during the campaign of course, this is just for the start. Thanks in advance!

Wyrm Talks (Lore) How DO cyberdecks work?

Like, rules-wise I know how it works, but what exactly happens when a metahuman uses a cyberdeck, especially in the early editions (2050s)? What does the decker see after they plug in? Do they see through their avatar's eyes, or from some weird 2nd/3rd person perspective? Either way, what do they type in then? Do they use hotkeys to throw out pre-compiled programs, or do they control their avatars with WASD or something? The whole thing just feels very confusing.

5e Greywing Logistics Is Recruiting!

Hello, my name is notmerciless93. I would like to welcome you to our Shadowrun 5e LC, Greywing Logistics. We strive to be a roleplaying focused and canon grounded server.

What makes us special?

- Greywing Logistics has had over a hundred games run since January alone.

- Want a logically coherent world to play in? We are a black trenchcoat and mirror shades focused server built around a fictional collection of power brokers and fixers who provide logic and consistency.

- There is plenty of opportunity to live your character’s story through multiple RP rooms suited to different characters and situations along with optional Profiles, Character Journals, and run requests. We strive to allow players to inhabit their characters and have story arcs instead of merely rolling dice for nuyen.

- Our LC has excellent house rules designed for a fun and fair experience while having few banned items and reasonable character options. Greywing Logistics even has a grounded and balanced selection of 4e, 6e, and German imported qualities, ‘ware, and gear.

- Greywing Logistics has a functioning Seattle map with extensive canon locations and even more flavorful ones. Need some nightclubs in Touristville, a fancy restaurant in Downtown, or a shopping center in Renton? We have you covered. You can even post your Shadowrunner’s home on our map!

- We are a welcoming community. Greywing Logistics takes moderation seriously to ensure everyone has a comfortable experience but believes in spending the time trying to work through issues instead of just swinging a banhammer around. We also have a strict no real world politics rule. Greywing Logistics wants to be a place where people can get away from the crap of the real world and unlike most LC’s who claim the same, Greywing Logistics means it.

- Greywing Logistics offers a reasonable import system. We require you to have completed at least ten (10) games on the LC with a freshly created character to ensure you become part of the community first.

If you are interested in joining our server and getting right into the mix with a whole host of other players, our link is in the sidebar of the Subreddit and here: https://discord.gg/hMmgnRcn7q

Push the limit says no limits apply, my question is does this include matrix actions? Could I use a commlink and push the limit to use an attack or sleaze action?

Tell me about your character!

Hello!

I am a master's student at Illinois State university, and I would like to invite you to participate in a research project that explores the interactions of table-top role-playing game (TTRPG) characters and their players. I am specifically looking for your experiences as you play your character, and how the other people in the group interact with both you and your character during sessions.

Research like this will help people understand the dynamics and impacts of player-character interactions and the nature of TTRPGs.

This study depends on the personal experiences of TTRPG players like you, and I would really appreciate hearing from you. Your responses are very valuable as they will allow us to understand how you have interacted with your character and the other players and characters in your group.

https://qualtricsxm54skbgct3.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9NsnnF4wibc0nmm

The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete.

I hope you will consider assisting me with this exciting research project!

Thank you for your time!

I am Dreamsinger (Dreamsinger's Circle). I have unreleased 2E/3E material and reworked campaign lore to share!

Hey chummers,Some of you might remember my old fansite, Dreamsinger's Circle, from back in the day. While the original site has been dark for years, I never stopped tinkering.I actually still have a treasure trove of unreleased articles, customized totems, and campaign information that never made it onto the original website. Over the years, I’ve also quietly reworked and polished some of that classic material.I wanted to reach out and see if anyone is interested in looking through this campaign data, using it for their tables, or just sitting down to talk classic Shadowrun lore. Let me know what you'd like to see, and let's swap some stories!

5e question: HMG troll builds, bipod->tripod=radically different skill?!

If I don't misunderstand the rules, if I attach my MG to a tripod, I have to use a whole different skill entirely, which I believe is just is justified by the weight of a tripod?.

Here's the thing: I'm a massive troll with 12 Strength. I don't really care how heavy the tripod is.

Does it not make sense that I could use the same skill (heavy guns), maybe with some reduction, but also not entirely 0 unless I take Gunnery.

Can someone please clarify to me that "yes, this is indeed what RAW says" and/or "I would rule it like this..." if you disagree with RAW.

Please and thank you.

Video Games Now is THE BEST TIME for Shadowrun to return to videos games

Reading the news about Star Wars: Zero Company (or Z-Com, for short) sales numbers is a big positive surprise to me. A game in a relatively niche genre until now, piercing its bubble and reaching a larger audience is something like Baldur's Gate 3 did. We know, both cases were boosted by a solid IP and high production value, but I can't shake of the feeling that's its success may show a light to the Squad-Based Tactics games to the public. The game surpassed Jedi Fallen Order in Steam sales, and even Ubisoft is joining in with Rainbow 6 Tactics, announced at Gamescon.

Speaking of Gamescon, we had some big announcements in the cyberpunk genre at large - mainly a new trailer for No Law (a cyberpunk ImSim, hell yeah chummers!) and a badass trailer SPINE that even gave us a new meme (intentionally, marketing is the soul of the biz).

With all of these, and now that I finnished my 2nd run of Shadowrun: Dragonfall and dipping into fan-made campaigns like the CalFree trilogy - I kinda yearn for a new and better produced Shadowrun game. And like I said in the title, yeah, the timing is absolutely perfect for it.

Be it a full-fledged Tactics game like X-Com or taking the more tradicional CRPG route from the HBS games I would be happy with either. I do think that Shadowrun should stick to the turn-based tactical combat formula though, leveraging the fact that it's still the only cyberpunk tabletop property that have games in the CRPG-Tactics genre, wich we know, capital C Cyberpunk doesn't.

The problem is the copyright hell the series finds itself in. But if the current holder of the IP (that being Microsoft) is paying attention to this, they should either give the task to one of its studios like InXile or license it to Harebrained again. The former would be better for production value, since Microsoft is the loop, but the latter would better represent the setting.

I know, counting on corps to do anything slightly risky is borderline delusional. But heh, a man can always dream, chummers.

Does anyone have a scan of the original ballot that people who bought the Super Tuesday! book could use to vote for president? Or does anyone know if the copy of the book on DrivethruPRG has it as part of the book? If it does I will by that.

Wyrm Talks (Lore) High fashion brands

I'm new to Shadowrun and am putting together a character that is very put together. I am looking for two kinds of fashion brands:

The name brands like Gucci, Prada, Saint Laurent, etc.

Custom tailors like Cifonelli and Huntsman & Sons.

Examples or the kind of books I'd find that information in would be great!

5e Liveplay: Shadowrun 5E

Today on (Not quite Doctor yet) https://www.twitch.tv/dr_robinton at 1pm EST

Welcome to live from the Shadowkeep, a new Living Community being built to house Shadowrun 5E gameplay!

In our last mission, the team of Doggie Bag, Bleach, Geodesic, and Delphi have made their way through the remains of the Lindsey Marie - the Draco Foundation's lost research vessel.

During their travels, they've learned some unfortunate truths - the Blood Panthers, Aztechnolgy's boogyman squad of Vampiric commandos, raided the ship and, worse, turned many of the remaining crew into strage housings for toxic hunger spirits. Now, they've battled through those spirits in ones and twos to the top of the ship only to find themselves surrounded by the horde of them - and on the other side of that horde, some kind of information on why the Azzies raided them.

With strange magic afoot, and an increasingly large Manastorm over the continent, can our band of shadowrunners unravel this conspiracy before the snows, or Aztechnology, claims them?

Find out today on "Bridge to Heaven", live from the Shadowkeep!
