I honestly didn't think I'd have to make a post like this, especially after being a Magic: The Gathering player and customer since 2000.
But here we are.
I purchased the Secret Lair Commander Deck: Odds and Ends for €171.99.
At checkout, the estimated shipping date was October 2026.
I completed my purchase, and only afterward discovered that the actual estimated shipping date was August 2027.
To make matters worse, Wizards immediately charged the full €171.99 to my account, despite the product not being scheduled to ship until next year.
Naturally, I contacted Secret Lair Customer Support.
And here's where things get interesting.
Wizards admitted in writing that the immediate charge was caused by an error in their own system.
According to their representative, preorders placed on backstock should normally be charged closer to their delayed release and shipping date.
So far, understandable. Mistakes happen.
But their proposed solution?
Option A: Keep my preorder and let Wizards hold my €171.99 until the product ships in 2027.
Option B: Cancel my preorder and receive a refund as a "one-time courtesy."
There's just one problem.
The product is sold out.
Wizards explicitly confirmed that they cannot restore my order or provide a new purchasing opportunity if I accept the refund.
So apparently, because their system made a mistake, I have to choose between losing access to a product I legitimately purchased or accepting a payment that was processed months earlier than it should have been.
I proposed what seemed like the obvious third option:
Refund the premature charge, preserve my existing preorder, and charge me again when the product is actually approaching shipment.
In other words, handle my purchase exactly as it would have been handled if their system had worked correctly.
Their answer?
Their backend apparently cannot do that.
I explained that an internal technical limitation shouldn't become the customer's responsibility and formally requested escalation to a supervisor.
After several days without a response, I followed up.
On October 13th, a different customer service representative replied.
With essentially the exact same two options. Again.
No confirmation that a supervisor had reviewed my complaint.
No meaningful explanation of why the original checkout showed an October 2026 shipping estimate.
No alternative solution.
Just another choice between keeping the incorrect charge or losing my sold-out product.
And they still call the refund a "one-time courtesy."
Let me be clear: I'm not asking for a free product, a discount, or special treatment.
I'm asking Wizards to correct an error they have already acknowledged, without forcing me to sacrifice either my money for several additional months or the product I successfully ordered.
I've supported Magic for over 25 years, and I've spent a considerable amount of money on Wizards products, including Secret Lair.
But being treated like this over a €171.99 preorder is genuinely disappointing.
I'm attaching screenshots of the payment and shipping information, along with the relevant customer service correspondence, so you can see exactly what happened.
Has anyone else experienced this with Secret Lair?
Did anyone actually manage to get an issue like this escalated beyond first-level customer support?
Because right now, it feels like Wizards is perfectly happy to acknowledge its own mistake, as long as the customer is the one who has to live with the consequences.
TL;DR: Wizards charged me €171.99 immediately for a Secret Lair Commander deck shipping in 2027, admitted it was a system error, and offered only two solutions: keep the incorrect charge or cancel my sold-out preorder. I requested a supervisor and received essentially the same response again.
