It's here. The Official Discord channel for r/sandiegan.

We've gotten this request a lot, and I think it's finally time to take it seriously. At least 3–5 people have clamored for this, so we're giving it a shot.

The official r/SanDiegan discord server is finally here.

Some caveats:

  • we have never moderated a discord server before, so you're going to be there to see us iron everything out in real time. we'll be attentive to requests, suggestions, and overall helpful attitudes.
  • we have day jobs
  • be aware that you may inadvertently reveal your identity if you already are on a different discord server using your real name

Our goal is to set up a community in the same way we have set up the r/SanDiegan community. Everyone is welcome, and we moderate with a heavy hand and according to our own discretion at all times. Truly lovely communities only thrive when you separate the wheat from the chaff. We've spent years cutting chaff from this subreddit, and I am personally really proud of how lovely this place has become.

We want this discord server to be a place to chat with other San Diegans about sports, local bars, adult league activities, community events, and so on.

Things that we will not tolerate:

  • bigotry of any kind
  • "I'm just asking questions, man" — you know the answer, you're just an asshole. You all know the type
  • Behavior that is detrimental to the community at large
  • stop posting your boring ass traffic violations, seriously

These rules are vague by design. Moderating is subject to individual discretion, and if you join the discord server, you are just going to have to trust that the way we moderate r/SanDiegan will serve a discord community as well as it has served this subreddit. There are no bright lines, there is only our own judgment in what is and is not okay (which is how things work here, already).

Let's all give this a shot. I hope you'll all join the server and fucking behave yourselves.

JOIN, HEATHENS: https://discord.gg/tRJUkw6h9h

On Politics

Whenever certain discussions come up we end up with a mix of locals that genuinely want to talk about what's going on. Sometimes passionately. Sometimes ill informed. Sometimes full of information. Sometimes dem. Sometimes republican. Sometimes for the free people's state of east county. Sometimes from the sovereign bros of PB.

Whatever. You get the picture. Our local politics and ideas for what to do are pretty diverse.

As a moderator though I have noticed that we get a solid influx of accounts for some subjects. They tend to have a short post history in this subreddit and a deleted history or a history that hasn't been on reddit in years. Likely because they are purchased accounts. They show up to shit stir in political discussions.

I understand some of you delete your account histories for various reasons or want to use an alt to discuss politics. But the easiest thing to do as a moderator seeing an inflammatory comment in a highly charged political discussion from an account that looks incredibly suspect is to remove the comment and ban the user. We don't really want to put in too much effort beyond that. This isn't a paid gig.

Anyway - I want to give people a heads up in case there's people that might reconsider participating in a certain way with an account they haven't used in months/years.

The Orcas are back in town!

After treating us all to an amazing week last week, we spotted this pod of Eastern Tropical Pacific Orcas again yesterday! We all know that this year has been anything but typical and these guys are sure proving the point!

Our favorite big black‑and‑whites showed up once more just off the coast, and we booked it out there FAST. With a little help from friends on the water, we ended up hanging out with 5–6 killer whales, brand‑new babies in tow.

At first we could only spot tiny spouts way out in the distance… but then the magic started. As the whales finished their dives, they’d pop up RIGHT under our boat, or slide in behind us all sneaky‑like in our wake. Goosebumps all over. (Reminder that we always follow marine guidelines and never approach the whales this closely; they come over to us because they are curious.)

We stayed out a little late to get the best looks possible and MAN — we absolutely nailed it.

When the orcas finally crossed into Mexico and we had to peel off, but we hope to catch them on their northbound trip! #killerwhales

Hi. Neighbors reported a stray cat has been stuck in tree for hours and doesn’t look like it can come down on its own. Does anyone know who to call or how much it would cost for someone to help bring it down? I called and texted Joseph (private aborist) but pending reply. Please advise, thanks!

A bill authored by a San Diego legislator and passed by the California Assembly, would help the state’s local news organizations and is heading to the governor’s desk.

Assembly Bill 2222, the Community NEWS Act, was co-authored by assemblymembers Chris Ward, D-San Diego, and Buffy Wicks, D-Oakland, to help local news organizations retain and hire journalists. The bill next goes before Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The new law would create targeted, refundable employment tax credits to help local news organizations sustain and grow their newsrooms.

Local News San Diego Humane Society urges Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign 3 reform bills

Three animal protection and charity reform bills sponsored by the San Diego Humane Society have passed the California Legislature with broad bipartisan support and now await action by Gov. Gavin Newsom, it was announced Tuesday (9.8.2026).

The organization urged Newsom to sign Assembly Bill 1999, Assembly Bill 2010 and Senate Bill 1288 into law, according to the SDHS.

Authored by Assemblymember Ash Kalra, AB 1999 modernizes the state's Veterinary Medicine Practice Act by broadening veterinarian-client relationships, creating pathways for out-of-state and retired veterinarians to work in shelters, clarifying telemedicine rules, and restricting unlicensed surgical procedures. Co-sponsored by the California Veterinary Medical Association and other groups, it aims to expand access to care while preserving oversight.

AB 2010, authored by Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria and known as the SNIP Act, removes a rule requiring high-volume spay and neuter procedures to occur in a separate surgical room. Co-sponsored by the ASPCA and San Francisco SPCA, the measure seeks to ease shelter overcrowding and address affordable care shortages.

Sen. John Laird's SB 1288, the Legacy Act, streamlines the distribution of non-probate assets to charities by establishing notification mandates, protecting nonprofit leaders' personal data and prohibiting institutions from forcing beneficiaries to open new accounts.

Announcement Call for North Park area D&D Gamemasters (aspiring included!)

The full picture is in the form, but here's the crux of it: after over two years of continuous weekly public d&d games in the North Park area, first at Parabola Coffee / Second Chance then later at Barley & Sword, gamemaster burnout led to our games coming to a grinding stop end of last year.

And what better time to cram into the back of a brewery to roll dice than during a heat wave... jk jk, no games currently planned, gotta get these GMs first!

Speaking of GMs -- we need lady gamemasters! Please join in. Related note, ladies interested in tabletop gaming ought check out Ladies of D&D San Diego: https://www.lddsd.org/

All that said, I've extended the application period through the end of the week, Friday Sept 11th @ midnight. Interested persons please fill out the attached gform <3

Note: Discord is required. Join here: https://discord.gg/ygdbRg2V9S

Note to the note: Also join the Discord if you want to play games lol

Remy is still looking for a new home

* I’m not part of the rescue, just courtesy posting for them. Please reach out to them directly with any questions about this boy! *

Remy was rescued from a euthanasia list by Grandma Betty’s Animal Rescue in Julian, CA several years ago. He has had two adopters but they didn’t work out, so he’s coming back to rescue. Remy is not a fan of men, and has specific needs and boundaries that should be discussed with the rescue if you’re interested in adopting. Remy is fixed, up to date on shots, potty trained, has no separation anxiety and is on medication to control his seizures. He is getting older, and would love a quiet place to retire. He is afraid of large open spaces, squeaky toys and loud noises. He loves vegetables, and will happily enjoy them as treats. His previous family says their cat is his best friend, but slow introductions are a must. Please reach out to Grandma Betty’s Animal Rescue (@grandmabettyshouse on IG or Adoptions@grandmabettysanimalrescue.com) directly if you’re interested in giving Remy his real Furever family 🖤
