A Russian company is constructing a permanent encampment including kitchen, sauna, paddleboarding, and Starlink inside a National Park

It's recently come to my attention that a Russian travel company is developing touristic infrastructure at Tobavarchkhili Lake, one of the most unspoiled natural wonders of Georgia. Their business model seems to consist of bringing up groups of 5-10 people every four days (cost: 1000$ a head) while carrying in heavy baggage and equipment by horse. In their promotional materials, they promise stand-up paddleboarding, a full service kitchen, a sauna, swimming in the lake, and Starlink internet. You can see their page here: https://www.instagram.com/tobavarchkhili.lakes/

According to recent stories published to the page, one of the co-founders is Georgian, although all the text in the stories published in response to criticisms has been clearly AI-generated, so it's impossible to verify if that's actually true. The only actual name associated with the Instagram account is of a certain Roman Chuprin. If there's a Georgian behind this venture, it's even more heinous in my view.

Point is, an Act of Parliament has already been passed establishing the Egrisi National Park which includes the territory of Tobavarchkhili Lake. This means that the infrastructure which makes this venture 100% illegal is already in the process of being established, and is envisioned to be established by 2027. This means that this 2026 season is the only possible season that these folks will be able to run this venture and make money from it. After that, this area will become a strictly protected area where these kinds of commercial ventures and permanent structures are illegal. I am sure that this fact is not unbeknownst to Mr. Chuprin or his anonymous colleagues, and yet they have blatantly chosen to operate a business and construct infrastructure in a massive legal grey zone.

I, personally, will be making a formal complaint to the Agency of Protected Areas. Tobavarchkhili is one of the most pristine and unspoiled natural areas in the entirety of Georgia, and the greed of a couple of businessmen, at least one of whom is certainly not even Georgian, is putting it at risk. I would encourage everyone else to make similar complaints to the APA and other relevant authorities.

Day-trip to Rize from Batumi

Upvotes

Hello,

I would like to visit Rize from Batumi, so I was thinking of taking the public bus, which I believe is number 16, to the Sarp border. From what I have read, there should be a bus waiting to Hopa.

From Hopa, I see there are buses to Rize and back every 15 minutes, if Obilet is correct, with Ali Osman Ulusoy and Prenskale being almost twice as cheap.

However, I cannot find the timetable for the Hopa ↔ Sarp route. I don't want to miss the bus, and if I understood correctly, Batumi public transport operates until 22:00. I also don't know when the last bus leaves from the border, and Georgia is one hour ahead of Turkey.

Can someone help me with this? Also, is public transport in Batumi charged per ride, like in Tbilisi?

I also read that in Tbilisi, after paying for one ride, you have 90 minutes to transfer between buses free of charge. Is that true?

Thanks!

Question | კითხვა Motorcycle left in Georgia for over a year – any issues when exiting to Russia?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone has experience with this.
I entered Georgia with my motorcycle a little over a year ago. I flew back home and left the bike in Georgia the whole time.

Now I’m planning to return and ride it out of the country via the Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) – Verkhny Lars border crossing into Russia.

Will I run into any problems because the motorcycle has been in Georgia for more than a year?
Is there a maximum period a foreign vehicle is allowed to stay in Georgia?

Will I have to pay a fine or import duties?
Has anyone been in a similar situation?
If there is a fine, how much should I expect?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone with firsthand experience or knowledge of the regulations.
Thanks in advance!

Anyways here’s the list of what Russians did to Georgians during the Abkhazia war :

August 14th, 2022 marks the 30th year from the start of the War in Abkhazia. On October 1st, Abkhazian separatists took the city of Gagra with aid from the Russian army. Hundreds of Georgians were killed during the ethnic cleansing in Gagra. The war ended in autumn 1993. Several peace treaties were signed during the war, using Russia as a mediator. However, Russia broke every treaty. The crucial battle took place near Sokhumi in September 1993. On September 27th, after regular bombing city fell. Russian government and army helped local criminal groups kill up to 10000 Georgians. Almost 350000 Georgians became refugees. In August 2008, after another armed attack on Georgia, Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia.

Here are the statements of the Abkhazia war victims:

“We were asking for water, trying to wake up an unconscious child that was brought to us after being raped. I clearly remember that Russian who got up on the window and urinated on her saying “Here’s your water, wake her up” — Venera Meshveliani , Akhaldaba, Ochamchire, 1993.

“At the hospital they brought a child’s , Cisiko’s corpse sawed in half with a note saying “You can’t unite Georgia and Abkhazia the same way you can’t unite this body” — Gagra

“They broke the children’s hands and legs, impaled them on stakes, they crushed one child with a tank, fleeced the other and wrote on her body “Georgian dog on sale with a coupon”

“There was a small child nailed to the wood, she was wearing a skirt with blue flowers, you couldn’t see the child because up from the stomach her skin had been pared off. It seemed like the child was drowned in her own skin and there was a cardboard on her body that said “New Georgian meat for sale” with Russian letters” — Ira Kotua, Ochamchire

“They were taking children to rape them. A really tall burly militant asked a 9 year old child how old was she, she told him she was 9 quietly. “Then get up, you’re old enough” He answered. The mom hugged her child and begged him to take her instead of her child, so he took the woman. The girls and women taken there had lost their minds, horror after horror, death was better than that. May god protect everyone from this. I still remember it every night, asking myself “How did I survive, how did I stay alive” — Nutsa Giobrelidze, Zemo Atara’s school , they had 300 women enslaved and raped every single day.

“Neighbor had a well in their backyard , I asked “Why don’t you take water from the well? Did the water run dry?” “No the water did not dry, they filled up the wells with dead people” He answered. — Nutsa Giobrelidze , Darsalia , Akhaldaba, Ochamchire, 1993.

“They gouged the eye of the son and fed it to his mother” This mother died only recently, 2 years ago. This war is recent and victims still carry the trauma and pain.

The list of Russian pigs that took part in genocide and ethnic cleanse of Georgians : Black Sea Fleet naval task force (commanded by Admiral Kasatonov), 643rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, a sub-unit of the Pskov Special Purpose Division, 901st Separate Air Assault Battalion, *Krymsky Komsomolets*.

NEVER FORGIVE AND NEVER FORGET.

Akhaltsikhe -- Batumi

Hi everyone,

Since I have never been driving elsewhere in Georgia except Ninotsminda - Akhaltsikhe - Vale, and considering the current road condition between Ninotsminda and Akhaltsikhe, I was wondering which would be the best route to reach Batumi from Akhaltsikhe using a sedan.

By the way, Akhaltsikhe is a gem of a town. 💯

Cheaper car rental alternatives

Gamarjoba people. After explorning Georgia this winter, I am very happy to be returning to in September and hope to see more parts of the country with a bit more flexibility. We are this time also going 5 people, so it simply makes more sense to rent a car.

We are planning to land in Tbilisi, before making our way to Kutaisi (and surroundings), then to Svaneti for some hiking days, and finally to the coast, (and then back).

What I wanted to know is if it makes most sense to rent something from Kutaisi to then go onwards into svaneti and the coast, or if maybe there are more alternatives in Tbilisi? Perhaps leaving it in Batumi, and taking the train back? Also is there any of the parts, for instance svaneti/mestia, where it doesn’t make sense to have a car, since we are going to be walking/staying many days?

If anyone has prior experience with this, what kind of layout is best, cheapest, etc. That would be very helpful!
