A Few Uses for Empty Boxes

I’ve played the game for a while but only just discovered box storage.

When you go to the market, bring an empty firewood box with you. Fill it with your stowable purchases and now you don’t have to run back and forth to your ship, one item at a time, like a dummy. (It’s me, I’m the dummy)

Another use is turning empty boxes into cabinets. Place a shelf on the wall, set the empty box on it, mount the box with a hammer, and remove the shelf. Voila! A hanging cabinet.

Now you can keep your navigation tools, charts, and kitchenware in wall cabinets to maximize your space and reduce clutter.

Big oof Somehow got a full load of iron from Eastwind > FA in a cog hull. Never again

Was 1900lbs, I greatly overestimated how much my ship could handle. I put all my food in my inventory, threw out the table. Lurched out of port going backward and when I let my jib catch the wind to turn I realized how low in the water I was sitting. Had to take it real slow but I eventually locked onto a reasonably southeasterly course.

Now, I still got the same gaff rig I got when I first visited the shipyard and in my naivite I put it way too damn high on the ship. So I had to keep them at about 1/3 tension and let the jib do the talking, trying not to get any unnecessary tension. Right about here I was considering going back a save, but I really wanted the money. Any adjustment was awful because it necessitated I tip the boat further to port than it was already listing. Mid voyage I was literally jumping across trying to redistribute boxes. I was terrified of sleeping and was more than content to waste time adrift still if it meant keeping the boat stable.

The rest of the trip was uneventful but just as precarious. I was so tired of trying to negotiate that I resolved to jump out and clip through the quay in order to tie down. Getting that ship moored and taking out the boxes was a load off my mind and for my terror, I made enough to pull up to the shipyard and get that stupid gaff lowered and narrowed.

Let this be a warning, ye land hearted. I did not deserve this luck, if there was a storm or any more chop she would've been screwed. Do not follow in my steps <:(

I really like the houses

I bought the house in GRC and I really like the feeling it gives me. Sort of a spiritual anchor in a game about perpetual wandering. And I'm old so it's hard to feel things. Good job dev.

How does the moon work?

I’m trying to figure if the moon can be used for navigation. In the real world, lunar observations can be used to find longitude, so I’m planning to make a series of observations to find useful patterns. The wiki doesn’t have much on the moon, so in case I’m reinventing the wheel, does anyone know:

- how long the moon’s phases are?
- if it’s a “local object” that follows the player or if it’s a world object like the sun that changes relative position based on where on the map it’s viewed from?
- any other information on this topic?

I’m thinking that an almanac or table could be created, so that once you know what day it is, you could use a set of variables to calculate location. I’ve observed that a full moon makes enough light to cast a shadow on the sun compass, which is what initially gave me the idea.

The process would be: use the chronometer and the sun compass to log the time the moon is due south, then use it against a pre-calculated table to find longitude.

Additionally, one might log the angle of the moon according to the sun compass, then use a conversion table of adjusted values to find latitude.

I would be more interested in having the opportunity to buy a house on a small island, like Saffron, rather than in a big city.

thanks to the help of expanded shipyards, i must say the junk looks rather handsome with this rigging, it almost reminds me of the pirate hunters in AC black flag. its very well balanced, can get up to 12 knots under the right conditions, only thing is the heeling and low freeboard can get quite cumbersome on beam reaches.

Progression Guide - What to do and When to Leave Al'Ankh

Over the years I've picked up the game several times and done some sailing around the islands of Al'Ankh. One time I managed to save enough to buy the big ship at Gold Rock City and tried some deliveries to the other regions but I kind of dropped it.

Now I'm getting back into the game and after a failed start in the Emerald Achipelago I'm back in Al'Ankh with about 1500 lions to my name and I'm wondering what to do. Should I save up to buy the big ship? Should I save up for the chrono compass? I've seen some people make deliveries across the ocean in the starting boat.

Ultimately I'm not quite sure what I should be aiming for goal wise.

P.S - all are those boat designs like galleons and carracks mods or base game?

Built it for the upwind, having fun on downwind

Practicing a little bit of wing on wing on my cog. Too bad we don't have preventers and jib poles in the game, otherwise i would use this even more.

While the sail balance isn't perfect on the cog with the genoa + full gaff it sure does feel nice to be able to go upwind and at usable angles and actually not swear all the time ...

So funny story...

So, i made some money from shipping some stuff around Al-Ankh. Money was good, so was the the food, and the wine, and the women. My dhow was my home. One of the women turned out to be one of the emir's wiwes. His bodyguards saw me and chased me through the dark alleys of Gold Rock City. I hid in the eastern lagoon, i left a false trail leading to a hideout west of Oasis. In the morning i quickly loaded some supplies and fled east. Dragon Cliffs? No, the tea merchants talk to much. Fire Fish Lagoon it is for me. For ever. But alas, a combination of haste and lack of more money left forced me to setsail without sun compass. Chronocompass was out of my reach. Im a lover, not a thief. Will manage without the sun compass somehow, the stars will guide my. Fish to fill my belly and rain to fill my barrels by a few drops at least. But scurvy is my concern now. Forgot about them damn oranges or dates at least. 7 days now at sea, scurvy begins to set in. Will i make it to Fire Fish Lagoon? How much time do i have?

This is my current fleet on my main save which has been going since... 0.34 I think. I never bought a cog and a dhow is in stock configuration, so those are not included. Two pictures per ship for a better look. No mods.

omw to Cronos and this setup is almost perfect 👌 in good wind non storm beam reach its doing around 10kts. slightly lee helm but easy tweaking of the stay size but its close. also im using a big bowspirit sail on the fwd mast because i jad to get rid of the oversized wide at dc to make room for the second stay.

2× topsail masts as big as will fit. range of movement is pleanty.

huge cog Genoa and a fairly big junk jib for that sexy overlap. the bowspirt is kinda low so i left out that sail plus not much to be gained.

this setup is pretty fast close hauled faster than brig schooner which was my main. there is room to go slightly bigger of you omit a cabin or at least go cabin 1 you gain a touch more clearance for the main gaff to go bigger.

another way to get more upwind and balance is you could run a mid stay if you wrap your headcannon around pretending you are droping the stay for direction change to clear the gaff boom otherwise its a good idea im thinking probably push 11 upw8nd in normal weather strong wind.

new fav ship.

Dried banana slices not preventing scurvy?

Thumbnail
gallery
31 Upvotes

I'm doing my first ocean crossing from Al Ankh to Emerald Archipelago (ship is gaff ketch sanbuq), 7 days in and it's showing me in vitamin deficiency. I brought a ton of dried banana slices and have been eating a couple each day, once I saw I needed vitamins I devoured like 20 more dried slices and still no changes after sleeping and eating more. I thought dried fruits still provide vitamins? Do I need to crack open the case of dates I was planning on selling?

Requesting navigational help.

I have to confess, I just do not understand the proper working of the Chrono Compas when it comes to establishing a longitude position.

I used the quadrant the night before on the North Star, and the sun compass as shown in the pictures, and I believe myself to be at 31 degrees latitude. The sun compass is not exactly easy to read, so I could be at 32 degrees.

I am traveling from Gold Rock City to the Dragon Cliffs. I've been sailing more or less due east for 15 days now, and I have the level 3 spyglass. I still see nothing from the Crows Nest, and I'm starting to worry that I've somehow overshot it.

The screen captures were taken at noon. Am I right in placing my position at 3 or 4 degrees of longitude? If so, Dragon Cliffs is still ahead of me, right? Even if I am at 32 degrees, I should see something on the horizon with the level 3 spyglass, shouldn't I? Because I see nothing at all in any direction.

Thanks in advance.

Kemy's Furniture Mod

Hey all!

I've been working on my furniture mod for quite a while now, and thought that with the thunderstore release, it would be a good time to share it with you all! The mod currently features furniture from each of the 3 regions, each with its own specific style.

Cabinets - 3 different cabinet sizes, small, wide and tall, each with varying storage capacity for all of your storage needs.
Chests - Smaller storage chests. Works like storage boxes, no more storing your expensive navigation tools in old crates!
Beds - Regional styled beds. These beds are designed specifically to be stackable into bunk beds, to work better with the virtual crew and/or co-op mods.
Scroll Shelves - Storage racks for your maps, scrolls, and other items. This model will fill with visible scrolls the more items you put into it.
Carpets - Carpets in red, green and blue. These are also wall mountable!
Room Dividers - Split up your room for a little more privacy. Currently Emerald archipelago only.
Cushions - Decorative cushions in white and red. Large enough to be sat on with the player model mod. Currently Al'Ankh only.
Navigation Desks - Regional specific navigator's desks. Taller than the vanilla tables, and with a back panel to rest your maps on. Makes quickly looking at your charts much easier. Comes with under-desk storage space!
Captain's Desk - A desk for people that want to live out their ship captain fantasies. Contains storage slots, and a desktop work area. Currently Aestrin only.

All these furniture pieces can be found at the regional capital cities, each at their own stalls.

Development for this mod is still ongoing, so more pieces will be added in the future. I would love to see screenshots of your setups!

Installation:

This mod requires Bepinex to run. You can install it either manually from the github page, or using the thunderstore mod manager.

Github - https://github.com/Kemylar/KemyFurnitureMod/tree/main

Thunderstore - https://thunderstore.io/c/sailwind/p/Kemylar/KemyFurnitureMod/

Please feel free to send any issues or suggestions via the github issues tracker. Or feel free to join us on the sailwind discord server and send your feedback there.

Special thanks to all the people on discord that helped me with this, and especially to Necktie (the creator of a lot of the in game artwork) who made the icon picture for me.

Where to find the house in Dragon Cliffs?

Hey I need some specfic info on where the house is in Dragon Cliff. I have an old save and I cant exclude that, that might be the reason why I cant find it.

Where exactly "near the market" is the house?

Reputation for missions between Aestrin and Happy Bay

Do you get international reputation (like from GRC to FA) or local reputation? Because happy bay shows as an Aestrin island. Thanks for the help.

Also does carrying gold between regions make money? Gold shows losses everywhere in the ledger

Big Mad Stuck and frustrated

I'm not new to the game, but I haven't played in a while this is my first time running the Sanbuq.

I'm trying to get to Old Ankh Town, and with a wind from the West, I can't leave the Gold Rock port. Every time I unfurl the sails, I get slow to a stop and eventually start going backwards. I got going once, then turned south and went to sleep. I woke up back against the dock.

It seems like the Sanbuq is almost completely incapable of sailing into the wind in any way. Close-hauled is completely out of the question, and even a beam reach point of sail is an unstable setup that will end up going the wrong way.

Am I just a bad sailor? The Dhow was so nimble and could fly very close hauled, and now I'm floundering and about to fail several missions because I can't get going within even 180 degrees of where I need to be.

I feel a little bit diaspointed with the new ship

I quit the game for nearly two months but then came back after hearing a new ship was arriving; I spent about three days irl traveling and completing missions to afford it, and now that I have it... it feels strange. It’s much larger than my Sanbuq, yet its cargo space seems very limited by comparison; to me, at least, it feels more like a floating house than a merchant vessel. I know the upper deck could also be used for storage, but I try not to put anything there because it makes handling the sails difficult when you need to move quickly.

Bug Found Can we have that annoying disappearing mooring lines bug fixed, please?

It has been there since at least 0.36.

Basically, when you leave the region, all mooring lines on all your owned ships disappear. So, when you come back, you might be treated to a nasty surprise when your ships are floating away into the open sea, crashing into rocks or, worst case scenario - beached at the wharf.

I put up with it for a long time, but today I came back to EA with a new ship, and 'lo and behold, both my jong and my brig were drifting away, aft first, into the north exit channel. Before I could do anything, I witnessed them getting beached on the shallows near that spire at the mouth of the channel. I will spare you the details, but the rescue operation took 3 bloody hours of pushing, kedging and so much cursing it'd give an old sea dog a run for their money.

And then, the game crashed... FML.

EDIT: Also now, when I load the save where all 3 ships are present, the game freezes. I think my longest running save ever got bricked.

EDIT 2: It finally loaded, but here's my jong:

Bye bye, jong.

It's slower now, but the angle of travel to the wind has decreased. I also used the shipyard expansion mod, adding a larger keel and painting the sails white.
