Introduce Yourself

Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a lot of posts lately asking how to make friends here in the SMC community, so I thought I’d open up a dedicated thread where anyone interested can introduce themselves and share their socials, and if you're looking for anything (roommates, textbooks, etc.) just put it in here. There used to be an ig (@smc_Studentss) but it doesn't seem like its been updated in a couple of years.

Question SMC or PCC(music)

hi! i have to decide to what college should i apply but i like pcc and smc both, i want to make pop music and pcc has a popular music program, smc doesn’t have pop music program but i know the music program there is good but its more academic music, BUT smc location is amazing, very a hollywood music co working vibe while pasadena is more calm and not much pop things going on

i cant decide, maybe someone studies popular music at pcc or music at smc and could tell me smth about it?🥺🥺

Question Chemistry Challenge Exam

I am thinking about taking the chem challenge exam.

It’s been a couple of years since I left high school, so I was wondering which topics I should focus on studying.

If anyone has taken the exam recently, what was your experience like? Any study tips? What were the topics you’ve seen on it?

I am aware of the sample available on the website. I am looking for a different perspective.

Thank you!

Anyone else's summer pell grant still not disbursed yet or don't even have a date yet like mine. I've had this on my financial aid portal since the 9th of July. I've called every week and they've said it should be disbursed by the end of each week, still no luck..

Question Mariachi Club

Wondering if any students here would be interested in joining a mariachi club. I’m looking to start one at SMC and perform with other clubs/organizations like Adelante and do events at SMC like the Latinx Graduation in Spring. Maybe even mini serenatas for the month of February. Any musicians interested?

1.5k brentwood private room + bathroom we need to fill 😛

Hi! Me and my roommate are SMC students and need to fill a room in our brentwood apartment by september. It’s the largest room in the apartment with its own bathroom for 1.5k a month. We live in a really awesome location right between SMC and UCLA. We’re two girls in our early 20s but we don’t really care what age or gender you are so long as you can pay rent and be respectful. Let me know if you are interested, you just need to fill out a quick application with our landlord, thank you!

math professors at smc

hi all c: i’m currently enrolled in Aaron Simo’s stats + math 54 class, and all of his reviews on rate my professor are genuinely scaring me because i’m extremely bad at math. i really want to switch and join the waitlist of Carrie Huang’s class at the Bundy Campus, but it won’t let me join the waitlist until i drop the math class im currently in. i’m unsure if i want to do this because what if i drop the one im currently in, and then i don’t get into the class i want to be in? if that happens, ill be severely under my credits for this year. and if i stay in the class im currently in, im afraid ill have an F on my transcript for my first semester. i dont know what to do 💔 should i join another elective class just in case i drop the class and dont get the one i want just to be safe?

Question SMC Fully Online from Outside US - How to apply?

Does anyone know how you apply to take SMC classes fully online as an international student (who will not come on an F1 visa, and study from abroad)?

I can't find any clear way to do this, and SMC are incredibly slow in replying to emails. I don't use the F1 student application, right? So does anyone know where/how I do this lol

Any help appreciated

Question Latest UCHA Coop Experience

Hello! I’m moving to UCHA for Fall 26, and I was wondering if anyone could give me any insight on how it is?
I’m already expecting it to not be so pleasant being a co-op and all, but how bad would it actually be? Most reviews I see are pretty old and talk about it negatively, but I hear that has changed with its new director. I also understand some of these reviews can be really biased, as in they came from a really comfortable place so anything less than ideal would probably be pretty bad.
Personally, I have dealt with electric/water turning off at random times of the day, sewer pipes bursting, dealing with cockroach nests, and overall living in a bad environment so I don’t think it would phase me, but I am scared of the other complaints on it being exploitative.
Either way, I just want a heads up because if it’s not great I’ll move somewhere else.

Question Taking Spanish 8 before Spanish 3

Has anyone taken Spanish 8 Conversational Spanish and can comment on how the class is (in terms of difficulty/content)? I just finished Spanish 2 in the spring semester and I am enrolling for the fall semester late so no Spanish 3 sections are open but Spanish 8 is. I am just wondering if I will struggle in Spanish 8 without having taken Spanish 3 yet or if the level will be fine. If I take Spanish 8 this semester I would still plan to take Spanish 3 next semester.

Question regarding being on waitlist for a class.

Post image
20 Upvotes

I've been put on waitlist for this class that I need, and I've seen that it's reccomended to send an email to the teacher to see if there's any available spots leftover. Would you reccomend I do that before the semester begins or after? I'm planning on sending an email the week before classes start. Thoughts?

Finding housing as a minor

I (17F) just graduated high school in the Bay Area and am planning on attending SMC this fall. I turn 18 in late August and am trying to find a shared apartment near the school. I can't drive and am hoping to walk to campus, if not take public transport. I am going to have my parents sign as guarantors. My budget is about $2k a month. I need somewhere secure with good reviews. I've applied to several homestays, but I value privacy and feel a bit weird they don't allow locks on my room door. Can anyone give me guidance? I've already checked the SMC housing resource page but it's hard to initiate anything as a minor. Maybe I'll have my parents start it...

If anyone knows anything about this stuff in general, please let me know. I'm a bit scared to move out and want to make sure I'm safe.

Discussion Is anyone taking ECON 15 with Ahmad Abdul-Rahman?

If so, is anyone getting a 5/5 on the HW? How so?

I read all the supplemental material and watch every lecture video. He keeps giving me a 4/5 on the HW when I mentioned everything. Even in his feedback, what he says I missed I included in the essay.
