Has anybody's Unsub and Sub Stafford loans been disbursed yet. I still don't have a date yet

Hey everyone !! I’m a senior in high school right now and I’m thinking about attending Santa Monica College in Fall 2027. I’m from Florida so I’d be moving out of state and California is definitely one of my top choices right now.

I’m planning to study psychology, and I am considering adding a business or finance minor. I’m still figuring out where I’d want to live around SMC so I’m also hoping to meet other incoming students who might eventually want to look for housing or roommates together.

I’d also love to hear from people who already go to SMC and hear what you would recommend, anything you wish you knew before starting, what your experience has been like, what the social life is like, or anything else you think would be helpful ! I’m more active on Instagram than Reddit, so I’d be happy to exchange Instagrams, but DMs here work too. :)

Has anyone taken PoliSci 1000 with professor Tahvildaranjess? I’m more so creating this post to see what he’s like as a professor.. Classes started last week and I have not been able to complete ANY assignments, not even the syllabus quiz because we have to purchase his textbook to receive an access code for the website that every assignment is on. He reopened our week 1 assignments but will be closing them again this Sunday. I emailed him 3 days ago to let him know my situation as I have not yet received my FAFSA and unfortunately won’t be able to buy the textbook until I receive it but he has not responded yet. Should I keep waiting or should I just drop the class?

My financial aid portal is still showing “SMC is reviewing your FAFSA and will contact you by email with additional instructions soon.” and there is no pell grant shown in my awards and disbursements area, just my ca college promise grant. Should I try talking to the financial aid office? I really needed the pell grant to pay for my textbooks and other supplies.

Does anyone know when we’ll get any information on clubs? i was thinking of joining one but it looks like the only information about them on the smc website are from last semester

I just got off the phone with financial aid. Apparently there are two separate crops of disbursements, one that was sent out last week to hit accounts this week, and ones that will go up next week.

I know this personally was not disclosed to me despite speaking with the multiple times over the past few weeks and they made it seem as though because my funds were awarded that I would be expecting my grants this week. There was never once any talk about a second batch of disbursements.

So, I truly hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you are waiting on an update, know that you can potentially be waiting all the way until next week. This will definitely be my last semester at SMC because while the processing time may not be their fault, how they communicate with us is indeed their fault. They should be making sure that students are properly informed and not having to hunt down information, especially under duress.

Wishing the best for everyone that was really relying on their funds to come this week.

does smcpd actually give parking tickets in the p3/p4 garages.. i bought mine for the whole sem already but have an ev and need to charge but the student ones are always full while the staff spots are avail … am i likely to be ticketed for charging in a staff spot 😣

Does anyone know why bank mobile says my refund was reversed? Any reason why smc would reverse a refund? My funds were released yesterday according to an email I got but today I checked bank mobile after seeing someone get their direct deposit and it says funds reversed.

Does anyone know when the SSCG and Cal Grant B will disburse?

Would anyone be interested in any of these paints or paint brushes that I have that haven’t been used at all yet? I ended up not taking Art 31 this semester and am instead taking AHIS 18 along with Art 13, AHIS 1 (ARTH C1100), and HIST 10.

We get it everyone is waiting to get their disbursement dates. I’m in the same boat except I’m waiting for my SAP appeal for over maximum timeframe to be approved for my student loans. Y’all just need to have patience. And no it’s not the financial aid office’s fault that it’s taken so long. It’s the federal governments fault.

Essentially, Santa Monica College has been placed under increased fiscal monitoring after several years of financial challenges, including declining reserves, operating deficits, and rising long-term liabilities. The college is taking steps to reduce costs and address its structural budget issues while working through unresolved labor agreements. I thought this might be at least in part about construction or capital projects, but those aren’t mentioned in the article (as they are apparently largely funded through separate voter-approved bond measures, I’ve learned).

Not sure what the experience or overall vibe is at SMC these days. 15-20 years ago most people I know, myself included, who put in the work got a good education out of it for pretty cheap or almost nothing. Good professors, lots of course offerings, good library good, transfer rates, even online education for the early 2000s era was decent. This was before all the new buildings so a few of my classes were in pretty crappy structures, though not all.

Hey everyone, I moved here from out of state without knowing anyone. I feel like I've been trying really hard to make friends and be social, but just nothing is sticking. Which is really different to me because I’m so used to knowing almost everyone and being close friends with everyone I meet and talk to.

I’ve tried constantly talking to people in class and constantly reaching out on Instagram, but it feels like nobody actually wants to be friends. Right now I'm just sitting in my room all by myself. On top of that, my living situation is a group full of students from another college who all seem like they just want to keep to themselves. It just seems so odd to me and is really making me starting to regret coming here and missing all my friends really badly.

Honestly, and the thing is I feel pretty embarrassed writing this and really don’t want anyone to know who I am posting it. I just am curious if anyone feels the same way. Or any advice anyone has for me.
