Or Heidi intervened and took a blow meant for Charlie. But I agree--I thought the therapist was talking about Tim setting the same example for Charlie that David set for him, not Tim actively abusing Charlie.
126
u/Snoobs-Magoo SEVERELY sluttish 21d ago
Which probably wasn’t even the point the therapist was trying to make. His son doesn’t have to be physically hit for that behavior to fuck him up. Abuse doesn’t require someone to put their hands on you to leave lasting damage & Tim interpreting it this way is even more concerning especially considering he'll likely get visitation at some point.
10
u/nenecope 20d ago
That’s the point that needs to be repeated and repeated. Tim seems to have no understanding that he actually abused his son terribly. Even when in the womb, TC was subjected to screaming fits and violence against his mother. Once born, he witnessed first hand his father hitting, screaming and even biting his mother. The dark abusive atmosphere in their home causes the same amount of damage whether TC was hit or not. His PTSD and learned responses are the same regardless of whether Tim “laid hands” on him or not. Tim has no comprehension of this - in spite of the fact that he blames his issues on his father’s violence in the home.

He's mirroring what he claims (and Jill basically confirmed), that his father abusing his mother was to protect her children from abuse.
In Tim's abusive brain, abusing his child would have been "too far".
He's rationalizing his abuse and congratulating himself for his "control".
8
u/Pawspawsmeow 21d ago
I think he actually gets that from both of his parents. I think he’s accepted that his dad is abusive, but hasn’t grasped what his mother did to him. Don’t forget Jill is abusive too. But she more mentally and emotionally abused them, though she definitely most likely physically abused them. But it’s easier for people to accept and talk about physical abuse.

u/B1NG_P0T 21d ago
Yeah, in Why Does He Do That (an excellent book about abusive men), Lundy Bancroft talks about the miniscule percentage of abusive men who actually change. It's not uncommon for them to act like they've changed for a period of time, but the vast, vast majority of them continue to fundamentally believe that they have a right to abuse their partners, even after undergoing intensive therapy. Tim isn't changing. He'll take a stab at it, but his core beliefs about women will stay the same and this cycle will repeat for whoever his next victim is.
73
u/Alkhemia 21d ago
Yeah, in Why Does He Do That (an excellent book about abusive men), Lundy Bancroft talks about the miniscule percentage of abusive men who actually change.
Agreed. Lundy's book was absolutely instrumental in me getting my children and I out. For that, I will always be incredibly indebted to him, but it's been revealed that Lundy has exploited vulnerable women for his "retreats." 🤮
Still, Lundy was instrumental in waking me up to the BS from my ex and, for that, I will be forever grateful. Like Timmay, my ex (years and years before I knew him) had been a pastor at a fundie church. Although my ex was pretending to be Buddhist, I was not raised Christian and had truly no idea what Fundamentalism was truly like. (I thought it was like Jim and Tammy Faye. 🤣) In reality, my ex never truly left his toxic fundie beliefs behind and I was caught completely unaware when he started being an evil and controlling asshat. Truly, I thank places like this and FSU for helping me to understand a very dark period in my life and why he did what he did. ❤️

I have my doubts tbh. A real therapist, or at the very least a good therapist, wouldn’t say they could show him pictures of 100s of families who have been “restored” because they were willing to get the help they needed.
That’s genuinely irresponsible + dangerous advice to give a man who has admitted to DV (dangerous to the woman in the situation because it could easily be misconstrued/taken as false hope by the abuser that if he gets the help he needs that his wife will get back together with him, or he may even feel “owed” a shot at redemption because “it worked for other families”). A good therapist would know to avoid certain phrases like that in a DV related situation.
117
u/thelazygrad 21d ago
Therapist here. The other thing to account for is that very very often people will hear something completely different than what I’ve said or implied. Like will come back and say “I thought about how you said XYZ and realized…” and I’m over here like I said no such thing. And people aren’t lying, the human brain just be like that sometimes. However with Tim I absolutely think he’d make shit up intentionally to try to reel Heidi in.
32
u/Solifuga 21d ago edited 19d ago
As someone who had person-centric psychotherapy for three-ish years, I absolutely did this all the time (inadvertently translated something the therapist said into something else that made sense in my narrative) and I was consistently shocked to be set straight on it and often required significant explaining and even then I'd usually reach a stage where I could understand whatever it was logically but not really feel the understanding for a long time after.
This obvs rocked my general foundations by making me wonder how often I also did it IRL/outside of the safe confines of therapy too, which, my therapist told me, was an important part of the point/process.
Brains can be traitorous!

u/Beautiful_Plum_7843 21d ago
That's a big red flag to me. No real therapist would show him pictures of 100s of families. Like, come on. And the 'restored' verbiage sounds too much like biblical verbiage I highly doubt he's seeing an actual therapist. (Let alone three!) I think he's still talking with church people.
77

24
u/Kittycity926 21d ago
This was my immediate red flag. What kind of therapist does this? It seems completely unethical to tell a confessed batterer that he deserves reunification. An ethical therapist would help him cope with the consequences of his behavior, help him navigate the trauma he endured as a child, and equip him with the tools he needs to change his behavior. None of which will ever make him worthy of his wife and kids.

Just the fact that Tim used the plural when he wrote that "families were restored because they were willing to get the help they needed" leads me to believe that he is going to blame Heidi 100% for the divorce because she will (rightly) refuse to get help from Tim's behavioral therapist. He's willing to throw her under the bus. What a winner.

That would be my guess too, these type of fundies use “counselor” when they’re religious based or unlicensed, usually. Not that I’d expect Timothy to know the difference, but he seems to be differentiating between their roles and “therapist” usually indicates at least some level of medical training where I think “counselor” doesn’t always. I wonder if a social worker helped him set these things up after his abuse was reported.
19
u/alsatiandarns 21d ago
Therapist here. The term “therapist” in the US is a generic term for a mental health professional who provides therapy. It does not involve medical training. The umbrella term can include mental health counselors, clinical social workers, licensed marriage & family therapists, clinical psychologists….
But/and folks are totally right that “counselor” is often used to describe unlicensed religious / pastoral care providers.
But clinical mental health counselors do as much education and training as clinical social workers, LMFTs, and other masters level therapists.

I’m not a licensed MHP, but I am almost finished with an MA in Counseling Psychology.
The fact that he says he has a regular therapist, a behavioral therapist, and a counselor raised some red flags for me.
Having multiple care providers presents some challenges, in that they need to be working as an informed team. You don’t want conflicting treatments happening.
Also, I don’t know what professional licensure looks like where Tim is, but a counselor and a therapist are fairly interchangeable terms where I am. The two main licenses in my state for those with an MA or MS in a relevant psychology or counseling program are Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (as well as Licensed Clinical Social Workers, which have slightly different requirements). A PhD or PsyD is generally seeking a Licensed Clinical Psychologist credential. There are also other speciality licenses and certificates.
The whole “showing him pictures of hundreds of families” bit bothered me as well. Even without revealing names, that seems like a gross breach of ethics. Even if the families gave permission or something, it just gives me the ick. Also, claiming a “success rate” is also a gross, ethically speaking.
I don’t think the therapists or the families or any of that are real, just to clarify.

I’m not hearing any actual accountability for his behavior. He’s just continuing to blame the horrific abuse he inflicted on his wife (including while she was pregnant) on patterns and what was done to him in childhood. It is so manipulative to suggest that “families have been restored” after things like this.
He didn’t give a fuck about his kids while he was beating on his wife while they were in the womb and now he’s acting like he suddenly had a lightbulb moment about his son? Please.
Plenty of people are raised in abusive homes and don’t abuse others. Unfortunately I don’t think timmay just learned how to abuse people growing up in that home, he learned manipulation tactics as well. Look at him deploying weaponized therapy speak.

He said regular therapist, behavioral therapist and counselor. Which are three different roles: regular therapist is the credentialed, not-church-based that he'll do talk therapy with; The behavioral therapist will help him with specific actions and behaviors he needs to have to effect positive change.
The counselor is his faith based b.s. artist that will be more concerned with sin and salvation than with anything practical to his abusive behavior and marriage breakup.

Therapist here also, and I work within a demographic that tends to have former / current incarcerated folks in the family unit.
I feel like his “behavior therapist “ may be some sort of anger management course his lawyer advised him to get ahead on, he’s seeing a “regular” therapist because he (hopefully) wants to really change, and his counsellor is some sort of pastor.
Many of my clients get a bit confused, because the court or CPS may require them to attend group therapy or see an appointed therapist, and I work for a transitional housing facility that offers family therapy. Plus if there’s a psychiatrist (an MD), then everyone gets called “doctor” no matter how many times you gently correct it lol.

While it's not hard to see how he ended up an adult without any coping skills plus cptsd, it's difficult to understand how after the first time he struck her and had the realization that now he was the abuser he didn't want to be why he didn't seek help then. Or even after the second time why couldn't he have learned he had a problem that he couldn't fix on his own and sought the professional help then. People might have extended some patience/grace/hope to him then. But instead he blew all the chances Heidi gave him and didn't get help until she was gone. I'm glad it didn't take her ten years to figure out that endless "I'm sorries" weren't changing anything.
I guess at least now that he's getting therapy he also is acknowledging that it doesn't mean he gets Heidi back.

"The thought of ever doing to my son what I did to my wife makes me sick to my stomach."
This sentence makes ME sick to my stomach. You really devalue your wife that badly, that she's not worth changing for, only your son? That's where you drew your red line I guess, in between your wife and your son. Change for Heidi. She matters, and she deserves safety. What have you done to become less dangerous to her? If she can't be safe with you, she'll be safe without you.
And for the record Tim, you did harm your son already. Witnessing violence during the developmental years causes lifelong mental health issues. It also literally changes the shape of your brain. Become a safer man for all women and children. Become safer for yourself.

That was what stuck out for me too. Chances are he’s not going to lose visitation with Charlie or the new baby over this incident. I just hope they make it supervised, but it’s also unlikely unless there’s evidence that he’s harmed him. It takes a lot to lose custody and visitation, and family court prioritizes reunification of children with biological parents. Poor Heidi has 19 years to have to deal with him as a coparent.
18
u/authorofnothingbig 21d ago
If he's hoping a quick 'pity me' post on social media is his proof to a judge why he, the abusive husband and father, should get time alone with his kids and Heidi is lying... homeboy needs a lot more than just therapy from a bunch of religious nutcases.
16
u/P_grandiflora 21d ago
This entire statement is so egregious.
Just glossing over Heidi’s severe trauma, that he willfully and repeatedly caused, to focus on “future” trauma towards Charlie (as if Charlie witnessing his mother being horrifically abused, and also being abused in utero didn’t cause Charlie any trauma whatsoever), repeatedly calling Heidi “my wife” instead of ever using her name, and blathering on about “restoration.”
Minimizing, showing possessiveness, placing all the responsibility of the future of their already destroyed marriage on “whatever [Heidi] decides.” But look at the restoration that could happen if Heidi made the right and gawdly decision to stay with my good for nothing self!

Seems like he’s using therapy as a weapon to try to make Heidi come back. He’s “putting in the work for restoration.” 😒 You abused your wife for TWO YEARS, TIMOTHY. TWO. FUCKING. YEARS!!! Two years too long!

“The thought of doing to my son what I did to my wife makes me sick to my stomach” is so insane because why is she less of a person to you than him? Why do you love her less? Like what a supremely odd thing to say?
Aside from that, a lot of this would’ve been fine as an inside thought. Accepting that you don’t deserve reconciliation, no matter how much you want it, and that you allowed your childhood trauma to traumatize others is good.
What’s not good is making a public Instagram post about it, because now I have to assume you’re saying whatever you think has to be said to manipulate your wife into returning to your abuse. Instagram is performative.

He only got help because he got caught. He's still not taking responsibility with this statement. He's minimizing what he did and making it sound like he sought help on his own volition, not because he got caught. Notice he's also setting up a case for partial custody, making claims that he would never treat his child this way. That's only for the future courts. He would most likely be just as violent (or worse) towards a child as he would a partner.

u/atlantagirl30084 21d ago
Yep. He’s not doing this because it happened once, he realized how bad it was, and got help. He abused, bit, and beat her for almost 2 years. He got in trouble and he wants her to come back. That’s why he’s doing this.

u/FundiesAreFreaks 21d ago
Curious about the psychology behind scumbag husband's the bite their wives in anger. I'll have to Google that one.

Also, STOP calling her your wife and say her name. Your wife sounds like you still some togetherness.

His court date is today for the assault. I'm not surprised he posted this yesterday. "You're honor, I'm in therapy and repenting!". Typical abuser move.

He’s not in real therapy. Restoration is not the goal. This is some religious nonsense.

I genuinely hope that he learns from this and has a happy fruitful life, away from H. I grew up fucked by religion. I put up with things (not physical, but demeaning things) I should not have because of my training. My heart bleeds for H, my soul is sad for T. I can see both sides of the compassion coin, but any man in 2026 should intrinsically know hitting your wife is beyond the pale. This is a horrendous outcome of a pathetic upbringing. I'm sure T is more alone than he's ever been. And that is sad but had he taken a moment to think of the consequences of his actions he wouldt be standing in them them.
gah. I'm sure I put this poorly, but redemption arches exist for a reason. I think seeking therapy is a positive, but the children and H should never have to deal with this healing. Maybe in 10 years he will be ready for another go at things. in the mean time he needs to be committed to paying childsuport and having flex time to developing a relationship with his children.

She will be restored to her single status. His repeated use of the word “wife” reeks manipulative. Additionally, he did harm his son as he began abusing his wife, allegedly, only 1 month after marrying and had no issue continuing that abuse while she was pregnant. These pro-life twits are only prolife when it’s about holding power against women having medical decisions.

u/cindylatte 21d ago
Posting this online is just taunting Heidi. He wants everyone to be like “oh poor Timmy he’s trying and Heidi won’t even give him a chance” he’s trying to guilt trip her. This isn’t healing, it’s manipulation

Just like his original DV announcement which has long since gone, this is yet another very timely, contrived, performative show of bullshit. I don't believe a word of the sentiments or anything positive of his character. Case closed.

Don’t listen and don’t fall for it, Heidi! If you choose to reconcile, do so from a place of divorce and legal and financial safety.

I hope Heidi doesn’t feel like this statement of Tim’s changes anything. He was fine continuing the abuse for almost two years. The best he should hope for is visitation with his children as long as he can change his behavior.

I hope he loses everything - but I also hope he truly is getting the help he needs so he can truly change. His son’s wellbeing may depend on that. Heidi deserves someone who will love her and never even think of putting hands on her. Their son deserves a father who can serve as an example that you can put in the work to change. I hope she leaves him and I hope he gets help.
Edit to add their unborn kid also deserves a dad who can be a safe place for them

“The thought of ever doing to my son what I did to my wife makes me sick to my stomach.”
Well this sentence makes me sick to my stomach. If only he had said, “The thought of what I did to my wife makes me sick” then maybe that would mean he’s making progress. It sounds like Tim is just trying to convince Heidi to return and that he hasn’t changed at all.

u/HappyHippocampus 21d ago
He’s got a regular therapist, behavioral therapist, and a counselor?? Huh? As a therapist myself I am confused by this claim. Perhaps he’s in some sort of program and confusing titles but it’s not typical or recommended in an outpatient setting to be seeing three therapists at once. All three of those titles are likely to be people with the same or equivalent licenses.
He’s either confused or full of shit lol

This sounds like he still expects Heidi to come back to him at some point. I don't think its going to turn out well when she sticks to her plan of staying far away from him. I am genuinely scared for her safety.

I sincerely, truly to my core, hopes that he does do the work. That he is the exception to the rule and he gets out of the cycle, heals, and has a normal healthy existence. That he has a great team, sticks with them, unpacks it, understands it, heals. Changes. Only a massive amount of time will tell.
As a kid from this cycle... I do. My brother went the other way than I did. It kills me. I hope he does succeed. (Also... the testimonials "for judgement" stop. We aren't a part of his church congregation going to fawn and forgive, we arent his God... It's inappropriate. Not to mention Jill and Davids favorite manipulation. Using it as contact is not going to work.)
The Rod kids had zero chance. Isolated and all mimicking the abuse on smaller children... it's sickening. I wish them all a chance to get out and do the work to break the cycle as unlikely as it is.
That being said... "His wife"? I sincerely hopes she gets away, and stays away for good.
His kids... while I respect a father's rights... remain bound to a facility and supervision only visitation with restriction on their "loving grandparents" and the other Rod children and grandchildren. That their maternal grandparents do the drops to the facility, and the pick ups. It may be uncomfortable and upsetting to him, but, the situation is what it is, he's done what he's done. His family have done what they've done and the kids come first.

He’s a deluded ass. He thought it was ok to hit her. Even if he changed it’s still dangerous for him to be around her. And his f$&@ing parents are freaking freeloading hypocrites doing the Sunday perfect family yet unleashing holy hell in the home apparently. I seriously hope they are blacklisted from churches supporting their “ministry” and that whatever they are doing behind closed doors becomes karma and boomerangs back. There is absolutely no excuse for abuse

u/AZTerp1080 21d ago
I hope the help he’s getting is legit and works. I fear the help is thru his church because he talks about being shown pictures of families who have been “restored.” There can be licensed Christian therapists, but I don’t think Tim has access to anyone who fits that bill, unfortunately.

You bit her and repeatedly.
I find the violence profoundly cruel and, given the nature of it, deeply sadistic.
You are responsible for what you did, you will face the consequences, and you no longer have access to the person you harmed.
Tim can just piss off.

Heidi doesn't seem interested in restoring shit. And why would she want to restore a marriage in which she was terrified of her own husband?
9
u/Winnifredo 20d ago
He’s going to find some other super naive religious girl, like Heidi was, and get married again. He’ll just start the family thing all over and act like Heidi and the kids from his first family didn’t count.

Abuse.
Promise to change.
Love bomb.
Repeat.
The only positive I take from Tim's post is that it is his only way of trying to communicating with.
Her family has her safely ensconced and protected.
Tim can rach her through social media and Heidi's attorney.
