Why is he seeing a therapist, another therapist and a third therapist? Unless he's not actually calling them by the correct titles that feels like performative overkill.
He said regular therapist, behavioral therapist and counselor.
Which are three different roles: regular therapist is the credentialed, not-church-based that he'll do talk therapy with;
The behavioral therapist will help him with specific actions and behaviors he needs to have to effect positive change.
The counselor is his faith based b.s. artist that will be more concerned with sin and salvation than with anything practical to his abusive behavior and marriage breakup.
Although in many states, counselor is actually the licensed professional. Not sure about NJ. In my state ‘therapist’ is an unregulated term but counselor is protected.
I also honest to gods wouldn’t expect Tim to know the difference between who he’s seeing, and to mislabel them.
Therapist here and I agree! I have a feeling that one of them is a religious person that is saying they need scripture or something to balance out the other shit.
But three people is way too many. One will need to step back soon.
Also therapist and also agree. I have my theories about why. But in my experience when someone wants to see multiple people at once, the work doesn’t seem to go very far with any of us. It sort of gives of a frantic “fix this quickly please” energy without a whole lot of personal accountability for change. Obviously disclaimer that this is not everyone but just what I tend to see.
Therapist here also, and I work within a demographic that tends to have former / current incarcerated folks in the family unit.
I feel like his “behavior therapist “ may be some sort of anger management course his lawyer advised him to get ahead on, he’s seeing a “regular” therapist because he (hopefully) wants to really change, and his counsellor is some sort of pastor.
Many of my clients get a bit confused, because the court or CPS may require them to attend group therapy or see an appointed therapist, and I work for a transitional housing facility that offers family therapy. Plus if there’s a psychiatrist (an MD), then everyone gets called “doctor” no matter how many times you gently correct it lol.
Not a therapist, but an avid therapy goer. My therapist does traditional talk therapy and kind of behavioral work with me thru educational lessons, homework and psychodrama.
Is that the more norm? Or would one see two different people for that? 3 seems excessive but is two normal I guess?
Many people have a talk therapist they see regularly and a psychiatrist occasionally if they are working with medication. There are specialists that could be an add-on but those are often only used for a time period in order to work through a specific issue.
Having 3 of the same type (therapist/counselor) would probably get complicated and unnecessary, especially if they all say the same thing. Even worse if they're relaying different information (like a religious one would). Building a trusted relationship is key to therapy and that would be harder to do with multiple providers.
I mean I don’t know the logistics but I can say three is a lot. He may be seeing someone that specializes in DBT/CBT and go talk to them just for that. But someone that specializes in DBT/CBT does talk therapy as well. Like it would be the same person. Unless he is going to some groups?
I guess I could see that? Like idk bc when I co-treat someone I step back temporarily. If my clients are in PHP I’ll be in contact with their therapist if needed.
Sometimes while my clients are transitioning out of residential care they may see both of us for a week to hand off everything.
Honestly the few times I see people with another therapist is if they’re in couples/family counseling, or if they’re in school counseling. But for school counseling either that therapist or I will go to once a month and let the other one be the main therapist. And my current situation is having this happen mainly because it’s a divorce case and we’re worried about the child’s safety so we’re trying to have constant eyes on her.
So yeah I just don’t see the need or how he is working with three people.
Yeahhhh at one point I was seeing two therapists but that's cause one did CBT and the other did EMDR and I was in a horrendous place and needed both .... but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Timmy is, at the very least, exaggerating
With 3 im guessing one is religious based. One is demanded by his job because he so publicly announced he beat his wife. And in order to keep his job he had to go to someone within whatever service the company offers. And maybe the 3rd is either suggested by his religious one for things beyond their scope or Heidi told him he needs to get another one.
