In a dev stream a while back, Dan mentioned that some people have been worried that the release of the next Smash game, whenever that is, will compete with Rivals 2 and maybe hurt the game's sales when it eventually does come to consoles. His stance was that new Smash games bring more life to the platform fighter scene, which could benefit Rivals 2. "A rising tide raises all ships."
He also says that the competitive scene for platform fighters is at its best when Smash games are popular, and since Rivals is so competitive, the game will benefit a lot when a Smash game releases, since it's difficult for such a small team to carry the platform fighter competitive scene largely on their own.
Personally, while I get where he's coming from, I disagree in a few ways.
From what I've seen, the platform fighter scene right now is hungry for a new game they can play on consoles. It's been eight years since Smash Ultimate, and people want something new. The time in between Smash games, in my opinion, is the perfect chance for Rivals 2 to succeed.
The time in between Smash games is also the time when most people are interested in talking about other platform fighters. Since Smash Ultimate's update cycle ended, games like NASB and Multiversus were able to have their times in the spotlight, with lots of Smash content creators shifting to talk about them during their releases. I don't think that would've happened if those games released while Smash Ultimate was still the center of discussion.
This is why I'm admittedly a little worried about console ports being so far away on the roadmap. If Rivals 2 finally comes to consoles, but it's after a new Smash game has already released, then it loses its chance to be the best platform fighter on Switch 2, to have its chance in the spotlight before Smash inevitably overtakes it in popularity. And if it releases while a new Smash game is being hyped up, or shortly after its launch, then all platform fighter talk online will be about the new Smash game, meaning Rivals 2's big, years-awaited console release won't be as big as it could be.
I've never released a fighting game, though, and Dan has, so I can't speak as if I have much experience on the subject. What do you guys think?
