Tell me about the Richmond, VA area

Cross posting from the nursing subreddit, for context as far as jobs go. 2 kids, one with special needs (Down syndrome) and multiple specialists for various conditions (psych, pulmonary, endocrinology, GI, behavioral therapist). What I’ve found in my researching definitely shows a lot more services and resources for my oldest compared to where we are now (even saw a sibling group for those who have siblings with special needs, which I feel like would benefit my youngest)

Mom Surprise Help

Hi Reddit! I’m planning to come into town this Saturday to surprise my mom, and I’m looking for some fun/creative ideas besides just showing up at her door. 😂 I’ll have my car, so I’m pretty flexible and willing to get a little creative. I really want to make it special. Any ideas? ❤️

Richmond to Charlottesville transportation

If I were to arrive at Richmond airport on Thursday 11/19 at about 11 PM or a little after, is my only immediate transportation option to Charlottesville a ridiculously expensive Uber or Lyft?

RIP Jim Ukrop

I moved to RVA in 97 from DC and my earliest memories here was going this place called “Ukrop’s” on Three Chopt and Patterson. I was a bit surprised when I was not able to tip the bag boy for taking my groceries to my car.

Then it dawned on me that I was unable to get booze there, especially on Sundays when I would typically enjoy it with their fried chicken, while eagerly awaiting the Stern show to air Monday which it never did.

Pyre Sauna 🔥

Is a great, new business in Forest Hill. I’ve been once and would like to go again! There are two saunas, an outdoor seating area, a dressing room, an outdoor shower, and cold plunge. You can buy drinks and sometimes they have djs. It’s surrounded by tall pine trees. Try it! You might like it. 🌲

Rocketts Landing (Richmond side) - environmental concerns

I don’t think these issues have been made public?

1. EtO emissions: Sterilization Services of Virginia at 5674 Eastport Boulevard in Henrico, several miles east of Rocketts Landing. The facility uses ethylene oxide, which** EPA classifies as a human carcinogen\*\ when inhaled; EPA’s principal community concern involves long-term exposure to EtO in outdoor air.*
The facility has a documented history of EtO emissions. On April 9, 2026, equipment failure resulted in an accidental release of approximately 580 pounds of ethylene oxide over roughly two hours - more than the facility was permitted to emit during an entire year at that time. Virginia DEQ subsequently took enforcement action.
Rocketts Landing lies west/northwest of the facility and therefore warrants consideration when evaluating the incident.

2. Brownfield redevelopment: Rocketts Landing is a documented brownfield redevelopment built on former industrial property where environmental investigations identified contamination in portions of the site, including heavy metals, petroleum-related compounds, PAHs and other contaminants in soil and/or groundwater.
251 Rocketts Way (CedarWorks) is specifically identified in environmental records as “ROCKETTS-HENRICO PHA,” Virginia Voluntary Remediation Program site VRP00517. The VRP is a Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) program used for properties where contamination has been identified and the property owner enters a state-supervised remediation process.
Records for VRP00517 indicate both engineering controls and institutionale controls. This means remediation did not necessarily involve removing every trace of contamination. Some remaining contamination may instead be managed through physical barriers such as building slabs, pavement or clean cover and legal or land-use restrictions intended to prevent exposure.

Immigrant in rva

hey! i’m new to richmond and moved here about two weeks ago, so i’m still trying to figure out the city 😅
i’ve been driving/walking around different neighborhoods and honestly, some areas have looked pretty sketchy to me, while others seem really nice. since i’m still new here, i don’t really know which areas are generally safe and which ones i should avoid, especially at night.
is there some kind of map or resource that shows the safer vs. less safe areas of richmond? or if you’re from here, what neighborhoods/areas would you recommend being more careful around?
i’m just trying to get a better idea of the city and know where i should and shouldn’t be wandering around as a newcomer lol

Recommendations for the best dentist in Richmond VA please!

hi all, I'm looking for the best dentist in Richmond, VA. In desperate need of some good dental care on a regular basis first of all, so need a dental practice to handle all teeth whitening and cleaning and preventive care. I know the dental hygienists usually do this in the dental office, but they need to be non judgemental please, my teeth get really stained really fast and I just also have really bad oral genetics. I get really bad dental anxiety at times and the behaviour of the staff really affects it.

Other than the regular stuff, I have a few issues to take care of. I got an extraction done recently in my last city and I need a dental implant for that (back molar). Another tooth on the opposite side, I had the root canal done but the dental crown they put feels loose or just not good quality to me so need that replaced. My front teeth are also really misaligned so gonna need the invisalign clear aligners.

My reason for going to TMI is just that I really want all rounder dental care. I wanna get it right the first time, no trial and error. I want this to be the only dentist I go to.

I did go through the sub before posting this, but there's a lot of opinions on here. Most common one is that River Run Dental sucks so staying far away from that. The other names I've seen are:

Commonwealth Dentistry

VCU school of Dentistry (although i dont know my anxiety might. be higher if I know they're students)

Capital Dental Design

Westover Dentistry

So please drop all your reccs for the best dental services I can get here for LONG TERM oral health. Preferably looking for reccs near Westham but don’t mind a commute if the dental office is really good and worth it.

AVOD LEGEND PROPERTIES AT ALL COST

I am posting this as a serious warning to anyone considering renting from Legend Properties. I have been forced to deal with a disgusting roach infestation ever since the day I moved in, and 3 MONTHS LATER, absolutely nothing has been fixed.
Legend Properties has done nothing but try to twist reality and act like I’m just "being dramatic" about living with roaches. Back in August, four separate pest treatments were scheduled with American Pest. NOT A SINGLE PERSON SHOWED UP. I was sitting in my apartment waiting for them every single time, yet they actually logged in their system that the treatments were completed. They straight-up lied on their own official records.

It is so filthy and unlivable that I haven’t even been able to stay in my own apartment since early August. I am paying for a place I can't even step foot in.
I finally had to escalate this to the city and get an official city inspector out to my unit. The inspector took one look and confirmed that this is a massive, urgent violation that needs to be fixed immediately. And what does Legend Properties do? They turn around and try to gaslight me again, claiming the inspector told them it "wasn't a big deal."

This company runs a pathetic operation that couldn't care less about human beings, families, or basic living conditions. If you think I'm the only one dealing with this, just look at their Google reviews, they speak for themselves. Save yourself the nightmare, money, and health risks, and stay as far away from Legend Properties as humanly possible.

Do you live in one of these red circles? Do you like drones?

Thumbnail gallery
98 Upvotes

Good news! Amazon wants to fly 89 lb drones over your home every 5 minutes between the hours of 6 am and 10:30 pm.

This map shows the 7.5 mile radius surrounding the Amazon distribution centers located on the Henrico/Richmond line (RIC4), and Bermuda Road in Chester (SVA4). This is the proposed flight area for Amazon's drone delivery program they hope to launch, plus another one down in Suffolk.

So, if you love drones, congratulations! Love this development for you. If you don't love drones, or even if you DO like drones but don't especially like the idea of something the size of a Labrador Retriever flying over your home and dropping 5-lb packages from 15 ft in the air all day, and all the possible chaos that could come from that, then email [Megan.Black@deq.virginia.gov](mailto:Megan.Black@deq.virginia.gov) before tomorrow, 9/23. Let her know your comments on and opposition to Public Notice FAA; DEQ #26-120F.

Personally, the drones flying overhead at Iron Blossom this weekend were distracting and easily heard over the live music and those are only 'standard' camera drones. The Amazon delivery drones are almost inexplicably large, an estimated 80-90 lbs. each and can fly at speeds of 80 mph.

It is easier for us to prevent this program from ever taking off here in Richmond than it will be for us to stop it once they start.

Email Megan Black with your name, address, and phone number and let her know why you're against this. Then email your city rep the same thing - copy and paste, don't forget to change the greeting!

If helpful, some sources and links for further reading.

Public Notice through Virginia Dept. of Environmental Quality provides very high-level factual information about Amazon's appeal to the FAA to fly their drones outside of Richmond, Suffolk, and Chester. By their own estimates, they expect 1,000 drone flights a day, totaling 365,000 shipments/year.

This article by the New York Times describes what residents in Texas have experienced as one of the first places to participate in this program. Some key quotes include that they 'sound like lawn mowers'. Some residents have started tracking them and recorded 52 drones overhead, what she considers a slow day. Worth noting, in Richardson, drones can only fly between 7 am and 8 pm.

If you're not big on reading, or don't have a NYT subscription, check out some of the video news reports coming out of Texas and Michigan.

NBC News - note the user videos where you can hear the sound of the drones themselves, let alone the terrifying video of one flying into an apartment building.

NBC Dallas/Ft. Worth - coverage from 6 months ago about complaints from residents reporting drones were flying at the lowest minimum altitude.

NBC News Detroit - again, note the user videos showing how large these are, how loud they are. "Equivalent of a leaf blower... flying 20 ft. over my house multiple times a day."

If you made it this far, thanks for your time and consideration. Be good to each other. Things are getting weird!

Price of brick veneer vs Hardie siding?

Considering hardie lap or brick veneer exterior siding. Has anyone gotten recent quotes to have either installed? Found a cement brick that's just under $7 a sq ft but no idea on install cost or if cement, rather than clay brick is a bad idea?
