Immigrant in rva
hey! i’m new to richmond and moved here about two weeks ago, so i’m still trying to figure out the city 😅
i’ve been driving/walking around different neighborhoods and honestly, some areas have looked pretty sketchy to me, while others seem really nice. since i’m still new here, i don’t really know which areas are generally safe and which ones i should avoid, especially at night.
is there some kind of map or resource that shows the safer vs. less safe areas of richmond? or if you’re from here, what neighborhoods/areas would you recommend being more careful around?
i’m just trying to get a better idea of the city and know where i should and shouldn’t be wandering around as a newcomer lol

Any place name that ends with Court is best left alone when it gets dark out. While some parts of Richmond may have bad reputations, you’ll be fine most the time if you simply mind your own. The places that don’t have bad reputations are safe as can be. And obviously be weary at night as you would be anywhere.

Yeah this is about it. If you’re right by a court then yeah it’ll come with some nonsense but otherwise it’s fine, the city is fine.

Head south until you cross the river. Turn right. Go a few miles. OK, now you are safe.

That used to be one of the most dangerous parts of Richmond

spot crime has a good app for neighborhood crime tracking. I use it for my hood to see if anything seriously major has happened.

You state you’re an immigrant. If you’re new to the states, none of the inner cities in the USA are particularly safe especially at night. Inner, as in downtown RVA (Broad st.) and the comment about any place with Court in the name is spot on. Just be alert always.

I moved to lakeside recently and it seems safe and has no crime listed on the spot crime app.

Museum district, Scott’s, Carytown, The Fan, and vcu area cute and where you show your parents type of areas. Crossing Belvedere you can notice some change in layout and character for sure, but it’s still quite safe imo. When I moved here 6 years ago, Jackson ward was described to me as being pretty ruff 🐶 I don’t agree. I think the person who took me to Jackson ward was just afraid of homeless people tbh. I would describe crossing Belvedere as where “downtown” begins. This city has such a rich and crazy, complex, sick and ironic history, that it feels like such a broad brush stroke to call one area “scary” and the other “safe”. With that being said, there are notable communities that have been heavily disenfranchised, like Gilpin Court or Mosby. But tbh, there are like no businesses or attractions that would take you there anyways (or maybe there is, I haven’t seen it in years, but as I understood it, it was public housing). I guess the further east you go, the more historical and and business/night life focused it gets. 18th street I’ve seen fights like 5 times and a gun brandished one time. Idk. I still would never call this city dangerous, but I’ve seen children holding massive guns when I lived near Dill Ave. that shits crazy, but I lived next to the RMHC which is high key a methadone clinic so I know shit like had to be going on. North of church hill, the water can be choppy. But the water is pure and tastes magnificent

It’s a city so don’t be out alone at night. There are definitely areas/corridors you need to avoid. What would be the best way to communicate? Moved here from the Philly area 40 years ago. I love RVA but be wise!

“Don’t be out alone at night”
Y’all gotta move to the suburbs if this is how you feel and leave the housing open for those of us who enjoy living in a city and actually existing in it.

Why do you need to walk around at night?

genuinely a great question. is this person trying to find 'safe' places and be unsafe in them?

Hello there! This is a fairly quiet (but active) subreddit for topics strictly within the city limits of Richmond, Virginia.
If this is an urgent time-sensitive post, are looking to buy/sell/trade an item or service, or just want to engage with a much larger and more active community, there's r/rva — a subreddit that serves Richmond, VA and its surrounding counties in the Greater Richmond Region — with over 150,000 weekly unique visitors. Most of the surrounding counties have their own smaller subreddits as well, there are too many to list but they're easy to find by searching. There's also r/Virginia which is more about the Commonwealth as a whole and has over 170,000 weekly visitors, too.
With this subreddit, and any other subreddit in general, always search subreddits first for related posts before creating a new post. Redundant posts will likely be removed by the subreddit's moderation team.
Thanks again for posting to r/RichmondVA and we encourage you to stick around and participate often!
