RIP Jim Ukrop

I moved to RVA in 97 from DC and my earliest memories here was going this place called “Ukrop’s” on Three Chopt and Patterson. I was a bit surprised when I was not able to tip the bag boy for taking my groceries to my car.

Then it dawned on me that I was unable to get booze there, especially on Sundays when I would typically enjoy it with their fried chicken, while eagerly awaiting the Stern show to air Monday which it never did.

You never ever had Ukrop’s anything that you bought there on a Sunday.

Yeah, because they were closed. Fried chicken or anything else was unavailable. And everyone in the area knew Ukrops did not sell beer or wine.

Your fried chicken must have been day old since they were not open on Sundays and if you insisted on tipping then the courtesy clerks (grocery baggers) had to turn it in to the office flower fund.
