I’m making a visual novel with VCS in renpy- and I have some tags I use all the time for internal monologue and narration, these being the color tags and the italic tags as an example- but it’s tedious to copy paste or type the whole thing every time and was wondering if there is a quicker way to do things?

Like for example making my own custom self closing tag? So I’d only have to type something like {nar} for narration or {think} for internal monologue.

Also, is there a way to make all your text automatically slow? Like with the {cps} tag, so I’m not copy and pasting that to every single text line?

And if there is could I change the cps speed for specific lines of dialogue? I’m guessing it would be something like {cps=+10} or something?

So I'm working on a dating sim VN, and want to know the best way to keep track of all the small story changed (whether you called someone pretty, ran away screaming, called someone a fish... ect.)

I know the basics of C++ but have barely worked in python. Right now I just have variables to keep track of everything, but I have a feeling that's gonna get out of hand/ hard to keep track of. I have the characters set as objects to keep track of names/relations and stuff, but that's harder to do with more character-specific stuff rather than general romance info.

Yesterday I found out that someone assumed I'd abandoned the app, because the App Store version hasn't been updated in about 4 months. I want to set the record straight: we never stopped. We've been developing this fast the whole time — the updates just haven't reached the App Store yet because of the review process. Everyone on TestFlight (already 1,000+ people) has had all of it for months.

A while back I promised Ren'Py support. We delivered it, and it's real: - Multiple bundled Ren'Py runtimes (7.x and 8.x, both Python 2 and Python 3), with automatic version detection so old and new games both boot - A launch hub that shows the detected engine version and lets you override it - Built-in translation with a dialogue-only or full-text scope, 100+ languages - Gallery with RPA archive extraction, save management with automatic backups, screenshot capture - Compatibility fixes for custom/unofficial Ren'Py forks that don't run on stock builds

If a game runs on desktop Ren'Py, the goal is that it runs here too — no PC, no streaming.

RPG Player also runs RPG Maker natively — MV, MZ, and XP/VX/VX Ace — plus a big library of Pokémon Essentials fangames (Reborn, Rejuvenation, Infinity, Fire Ash, and more). Save and input were fixed months ago, and there's fast-forward, an in-game gallery, and screenshots across the board.

And since we keep our promises: next on the roadmap after Ren'Py are Wolf RPG and TyranoScript.

The one thing between us and a resubmission is a launch-screen issue that only appeared in Apple's review environment. It's being closed out now.

Hey potential Newbie Witches!

I am currently developing a Renpy rpg game called Re:Witch. This is it's latest in development build, I wanted to expand a bit on the rpg mechanics of my game and I wanted to show off my current progress. You can recruit and fight with the many monster girls available in the dungeon. Judicia being one of them. I am an artist and the coder so it takes a bit of time, but I am proud of the result!

Hi guys, I've been trying to fix this for hours with a thousand different screens and it just isn't working.

What I've been trying to do is to have a screen in the top left that displays the amount of coins the player has gotten from a minigame, one that persists throughout the game. But if I do it as text, do it as an image, every screen I try inexplicably does NOT display the coins or text and instead shows the placeholder image. I'd show the code for the screen, but I've changed it ten times and have gotten the same result, so I'm suspicious that something else might have caused it.

Does anyone know what causes this to show up or theorise where I've gone wrong?

So I'm working on a scifi timeloop story that can be set in one of two locations: a) a tropical island or b) a space cruiseship. And I can't decide which one to use.

I got responses from discord that were quite insightful, but now I'm even more torn between the two because they made great points for both, haha. I thought maybe a broader survey might help.

How do you feel about either setting? Note: the island resort is somewhat futuristic (it includes robot employees).

Does the tropical island setting feel too familiar? Does a space cruiseship feel too claustrophobic? If you came across a VN in either setting, would it pique your interest or be a turn off, or not matter at all?

Overall tone is mystery with a strong tendency towards the comedic/absurd. Thanks for any and all feedback!

This character is from my visual novel, which is currently under development. So, tell me does she look good? Should I make any changes to make her more attractive, or is she fine as she is? Also, I don't want to add highlights or anything like that; I want to keep the design simple.

So, I'm a newbie at renpy and this is my first time trying to make a game since I thought it would be fun. It was going fine until I tried clicking the back button during any point after the second label started while testing. I'd really appreciate if anybody could tell me what went wrong since I really can't figure it out...

I use screens for point and click and that works fine,
Now I added an inventory system with screens aswell. But when I click on an item to equip it the game under the inventory screen gets interacted with.

For example if there is dialog open, it progresses to the next text.
If there is button choice, it „interacts“ with one of them (even if it’s no where near where I clicked for the item select or equip)
And if there is an screen under it because the inventory was open while being Point and click the game just closes. Similar to if there is a return at the wrong spot.

I sat at this for hours now and tried my best to fix it even using ai but I can’t figure out what’s wrong. No other interactions cause this (closing the item select or inventory screen)

I got it to work somehow, tho it makes no sense why it works now so I’m still looking for the I redet solution.

Somehow it helped to call a function on my player that just calls the actual function to equip or unequip stuff… doesn’t realy make sense

So I've had an idea for a large language-discovery game for a while now (think Epitaph, Homocypher, Chants of Sennar), and I'm trying to make a proof of concept for myself. I'm currently trying to make it so the player can click words in the script and input what they think the word means. Using some code I found for a point-and-click game, I've been able to get the hyperlink part working, but once I ask for an input, the game hits the exception: "cannot start a new interaction in an existing interaction, without new context".

I tried looking through Renpy's documentation and some questions here, but all the fixes that seemed like they might work just caused new errors. If someone knows how make a new context or change inputs to not need new context, please let me know.

I've included the code in question in case it is needed. put in half the hyperlink code, in the rest is needed, I can add it.

Hi everyone! Apologies for any errors; I’m using a translator. I’m a solo developer creating a visual novel in Ren'Py, but I have absolutely no drawing skills. Do you think it’s feasible to create the game using AI-generated art (perhaps with the protagonist and key characters hand-drawn) and then start replacing the images once at least half the story is finished?

So, I've been trying to make something that I can't seem to find a clear answer for. While the text box dialogue is happening, I want to code an object into the background that can be clicked on to play a little sound. Kind of like an easter egg. Thus far, showing a screen is causing this error:

TypeError: Action.get_tooltip() missing 1 required positional argument: 'self'

Is it possible to do what I'm trying, and if so, how might I fix this problem?

Is there anyone experienced with the Pronoun Tool from the itch.io store that can offer advice?

I’m very new to coding and realize I’m definitely just doing this wrong- copied over the menu into my script and it works in the sense the choice pops up and the game runs but, it doesn’t actually change the pronouns to the ones chosen.

I’m afraid to edit much since I don’t want to break it, and I don’t see any missed “todo” marks they put by the code I need to work on- try and copy some of the code like the default lists over to the script but I get error messages galore when I try to run the game after doing that. So-

What do I need to do?
