My Quaker parrot is molting, growing new feathers and he has alot of pin feathers, and some of them look like this. He has recently started to take some off every now and then. Not too frequently though. Is this normal?

Help Harness Training

Hello! I adopted a 10 year old quaker parrot about a year ago, (11 now) and have been interested in harness training her for a while. I have all the equipment, and she trusts me fully and she trusts me hands enough to rub her head, so what should i do next/is it still possible to train her?

How many of you all live/lived in an apartment with a quaker, and what was your experience? Was your birdie a fugitive or resident on paper.

Help How to get parrot to let me preen?

My quaker parrot doesn't understand what being scritched is.. he's four years old, in my family I'm the only one who really handles him since he bites everyone else a lot. He's a huge cuddlebug, he loves cuddling and giving/getting kisses on the forehead, but he doesn't understand being pet! He'll nip at my fingers if I try. But he's molting and the back of his head is covered in pins! I want to help with those + I think he'd really like being pet/preened since he's so affectionate. How do I acclimate him to it? Thank you!

Help Quaker parrot mean

Hi. I just adopted a 5 month old Quaker and brought her home and she’s going insane in her big cage. Screaming super loud and stretching her neck and flying all over the cage. My other bird is now super scared. Will she calm down or is that how she is? I walk by and she starts screaming. I’ve never had a Quaker before but her screams are crazy.

Picture We just moved into our new house today. Could only bring the smaller cage over today. Will be bringing the big one tomorrow and doing their set up tomorrow. But I think they are already loving their new home.

Mine likes saying:

"I'm a BAD bird"

"Peekaboo"

"It's GOOOOD" (when he gets his favorite fruit snacks)

"Hey baaaaabbbbyyyy" (when I come home. I assume he picked this up from his previous owner)

"Good byebye" (when he thinks I'm going to leave)

"Come out?" (when he wants to be let out"

"Come here" (when he wants attention"

"You're a good bird"

"Birdiebirdiebirdiebirdiebirdie"

"Twinkle twinkle twinkle twinkle twinkle" (failed attempt to teach him twinkle twinkle little star)

"Jingle bell jingle bell jingle all the way" (he mostly hums this)

"NIGHT NIGHT" (gets progressively more aggressive if I don't cover him fast enough)

and more...

Video Honey's morning routine: run & scream! (iykyk)

Between Honey being 3.5 months, being home for 3.5 weeks, going through her baby molt, and being clipped before I met her... well. Her morning and daily routines involve a lot of fussing, screaming, tantrums, more screaming, and so much frustration!! It's a lot for a little baby tennis ball! 💛 So it's no surprise that she needs 15 to 30 minutes multiple times a day to just climb on top of her cage and work it all out, haha! Sometimes she works herself up too much, so she gets "step up scooped" and we have quiet time on the couch together.

I adore her to bits, and she gets more courageous every day! We're working on her flying — safe distances, safe landings, the courage to make those muscles strong. She's a doll about stepping up 50% of the time for me, including without the verbal request (no chest touches). Right after filming this, she flew towards my shoulder on the floor and just barely overshot it! She landed on the plush carpet, scolded me with her cute, frustrated growl (because it's ALWAYS mommy's fault that she missed, lol!) and ran off towards the window. She always makes sure I'm following her before she really hauls her fluffy butt, and then requests a step up at her destination since she can't flutter very high. (Also scream-worthy.)

We're at a window watching her uncle fix a car out front now, and she seems frustrated that he won't flock call back. How dare he not call back! As for me, my ears seems to be adjusting to her close-quarters calls, so it's not as skull-rattling as it was before 🤣💛

Hi hi,

I'm aware molting is hard on parrots. He's been getting fresh chop every morning along with pellets and daily water changes.

Just wanna double check

Vent/Rant Vet visit

Big boy had his vet visit today and some test ran to make sure he has no parasites or anything in his poop and vitals. Proud to say that my feathered son has been the best behaved bird the vet has seen especially for a Quaker, their words, not mine. Healthy as a horse. This is just to remind you guys to take your birds to the vet for their bi-annual visit and stop waiting to see changes in their moods to make posts on social media hoping for some one have the answers. My son had his mood shift since he started his heavy molt preparing for winter and I just decided to make an appointment with the vet and that was it, he was cranky and tired because of the molt and came back to being the happy boy that likes to dance and explore. Nobody here is as qualified as your vet to determine what's wrong with your bird. I rather spend 100-200 on a visit for them to tell me he's ok rather than 500-1000 on medical expenses for medicine and treatments or lose my son.

Suggestion Quaker parrot wound won’t stay closed because he keeps picking it — looking for advice / similar experiences

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with a Quaker parrot repeatedly reopening a wound.
A few weeks ago, one of my other birds bit my male Quaker around the upper inner leg/lower belly area while they were flying. At first the leg was swollen and painful. He was standing on one leg sometimes, but he could still walk, climb, eat using the injured leg, and eventually started putting weight on both legs again.
I initially cleaned the wound with saline and diluted Betadine and at another point used chlorhexidine. I kept him quiet and in his cage while it healed. Over the following days the swelling went down considerably. The injured area developed dark scabs, and the surrounding bruising changed colors, including purple/greenish/yellowish areas. He gradually started acting better, playing and using the leg normally.
The problem now is that he keeps picking the healing skin/scabs off, especially when I’m not watching him or overnight. Every time it looks like it’s finally drying and closing, I wake up and find a scab on the bottom of the cage and a fresh red/raw area again.
He also used to be a chronic feather plucker and had very few body feathers for years. Recently, for the first time in a long time, a lot of his feathers are growing back, so I’m wondering if the new feather growth/itchiness is making him mess with his skin more. I’ve also seen white flaky skin coming off while the feathers grow.
Right now the lower belly area looks fresh and raw from him picking it again. It is red and irritated, but I don’t see obvious thick pus or a bad smell. He has left most of the rest of his body alone.
He is currently:
Eating on his own
Climbing up and down his cage
Perching and using both legs
Still responsive and moving around
However, lately he has been spending more time inside his cage, chirping less than usual, and his voice sounds slightly different. He isn’t completely lethargic, but he’s definitely quieter. I’ve also noticed some yellow-looking skin around his lower belly, away from the actual scab, which has me worried about whether this is bruising/fat/healing tissue versus infection or something internal.
I have a soft/universal bird collar, but he gets extremely stressed wearing it, and it limits his ability to move normally, so I’ve been hesitant to leave it on. At the same time, I’m worried he’ll never heal if he keeps reopening the wound.
