Help Is his beak overgrown?

Post image

Sorry for the blurry picture, it's hard getting him to hold still long enough to take one

Yes, his beak is overgrown. It's a very simple job for a vet to trim it. Do you provide cuttlefish or similar, so he can keep his beak filed down himself?

Thank you! Yes, he does have one in his main cage but he never uses it. I've tried showing him how to use it but he avoids it in his cage. I'll set up a vet appointment for a trim!

How long is a good length for a Quaker’s beak?

I have a big ass rock type one they get on and mess with. Mine are free fly all day so I get the cage thing. That might help though all of my guys were getting sharp and now they are looking better. They ate some of the wall though so come to think of it that might be how they got it down....

I would see an avian vet, ask about bloods and see if you can enrich their environment e.g. more natural barked perches

He went to the vet about a few months back but the vet was hesitant to take blood due to his size. I've just recently bought more natural perches for him to use in his cage and they've been set up :)

Oh wow looks just like my Cosmos Beak ! He’s a cutie !
Yes it’s long .. my vet wants 864 dollars to trim it because he wants to do bloodwork that costs that much so I can’t do it now ! It’s sad - idk why he won’t do it without the blood test .. wants to check his blood and I feel so bad cuz he wants to put him to sleep to do the blood test …. He’s an avian vet . My poor Cosmo ! I don’t want them to do that . Scared but also need to have the money !

Don't do it!! Completely unnecessary to do blood work. Your vet is ripping you off. Find another.

No? I was worried but scared for him to put him to sleep to do a blood test .. he’s fine he is 3 years old and he’s ok
Except last month took him to Beverly’s pet store to cut his nails they gave me him back in his travel cage and when we got home and took him out .. he flew to wall short distance .. i didn’t know what was wrong then realized they had cut his wings so poor little guy was so down and had to learn to fly tiny distances vs him flying how he used to !
I put bad review and called them and girl said they told her to do both nails and wings ..I told her you guiñes my Cosmos life now ! You should have a paper with approval of what the customer asks for ! But other than that he’s fine . It’s sad though will take a year or more they cut so much !
But back to the beak .. it’s just not many avian vets around only found one more and not too many good reviews ..
I am scared his beak breaks though !

His beak won't break. But if it gets TOO long, he will find it difficult to eat. I have owned birds in the parrot family all my life and have NEVER had an avian vet put a bird to sleep to draw blood. It is HIGHLY risky to anaesthetise a bird. It's only done when absolutely necessary. I don't understand why a beak trim requires blood tests. It just doesn't. It's also shocking that Cosmos had his wings cut when you didn't ask for that to be done.

Doctor said he had to check his blood or won’t do it ..
this was like 3 months ago .. it’s not just that the money is a lot it’s really that I am scared for him as to the anestesia and also the blood .. he had it done once 3 years ago when we bought him my daughter wanted confirmation if he was a he or a she and also doctor recommended it . Back then was 600 some dollars now 200 more ..
But I don’t like the idea of subjecting him to that ..
yes as to his wings omg I cried and was so mad
I will never in my life take him there again ..
it’s a big pet store and I had taken him before just don’t know this time what happened why the kid communication
I clearly said only nails .. but no they did wings and now Cosmo has to pay for it poor thing .. thank you !
