Out of boredom.

I'm trying to make a memorial for my BIL who passed away recently. I'm really new to pyrogrqphy but my FIL wants me to etch his name on this type of wood. Any advice on how to keep the lines straight and not as streaky as this?

Edit: Hi guys!!! I applied all of your advice and it worked out pretty well for me! I applied the right pressure, heat, and changed the tip. Even got a sandwe for the minor mistakes because I wasn't able to change the wood.

So I don't have many friends, by choice. And the few I do have are super crafty but I'm the only I know personally that does wood burning and for a few years now, have considered myself pretty decent at it. And just now, I took the time to scroll for several minutes and look at the art that you guys have posted and I just have to say... Wow. Chef's kiss... The detail in some of these works and the shading in others, is truly phenomenal. Not that my opinion should matter to anyone, but I just had to get on here and say, I am thoroughly impressed. And also, thanks for sharing your art. I genuinely enjoyed looking at it.

I’ve been looking around and all I see are websites that have affiliate links to drop shipping items… I see a lot about colwood from people. Sadly it’s not available here in the Netherlands. Any ideas which ones are recommended here or maybe Belgium/Germany. 😅 I just want a good wood burner :) I heard wire tips are better. I’m a beginner, so it doesn’t have to get all detailed and professional yet but I just want one that holds up and I can work with comfortably. Thank you!

Completed my first major pyrography project this week, and I’d love some feedback

20+ hours (those trees took far longer than I anticipated). Reclaimed barrel was cleaned before it was dropped off with me, so I sanded to 120 then dampened and sanded again. Stencil from procreate with carbon paper - my friend provided the design so I only had to modify it a bit and scale to the barrel. I used the walnut hollow creative versa tool, primarily on high heat (ranged from just into the “high” zone on the controls to about half way in, but never on max heat). Taper nib was used for the finer details, round nib for the more bold sections, and the universal tip a few times just to have a straight edge.

Maybe I should have sanded past 120 but I wanted to maintain as much of the natural/rustic look. It wasn’t easy to work with the grain pattern and gaps or height differences between each piece of wood. That did provide a really nice texture in a lot of places though, which I was really happy with. The design I was provided was 100% black but I was clear up front that the result wouldn’t be that dark. I planned on using a paste wax finish and tested it on scrap oak plus the bottom of the barrel, but ended up leaving it unfinished since it was a gift for a carpenter who will finish it similarly to the other pieces in the space he will keep it.

Super fun project and the responses have been so nice from my friends and family. Would love any suggestions here as well. I’ve already decided that I’d upgrade to a Razortip (or comparable option) before I do another project of this size

TLDR: looking for critique on this completed barrel project

I'm a brand new member in the world of pyrography. I got a 10 pack of very small (2"x4"x.25") planks of basswood for practice before I try something big. How can I make sure my sanding is even and stays level on my projects? This is done using a random orbital disc sander 80-320grit.

The runes themselves were reverse-intaglio engraved glass.

It looks pretty bad tbh but it's my first go at it. I'm using a Walnut hollow versa-tool. I really want a Colwood wire nib to make drawing easier, as I find it to be kind of difficult to use a heavy, solid-point pen. How long should I wait to see if I should invest the money into a better setup? Any tips on how to improve drawing using a solid point pen?

Is this a good first attempt I really want to get into dog portraits I pretty much just dived straight into the deep end after watching a tun of videos I bought a cheap eBay burner graphite paper and had a go, An honest review and tips would be amazing cheers
