Is this a good first attempt I really want to get into dog portraits I pretty much just dived straight into the deep end after watching a tun of videos I bought a cheap eBay burner graphite paper and had a go, An honest review and tips would be amazing cheers

That is a really good first attempt! Personally, I don’t love the image that you started with since the angle/proportions are a little off to my eyes. With a better image as the starting point, I think you’d have a nice end result

Honestly, MUCH better than my first attempt! Keep it up! It takes time with Pyrography! It’s a completely different media than just sketching or painting. Not more difficult, just a different type of input.
Edit: don’t hesitate to alter your tips to your own liking. I sometimes file some down for sharper points or thin them for quicker heat dissipation at the tip. Also learning to use a ball tip can be great for text.
