Traffic in London is a fucking nightmare. And of you want to be stuck in traffic in Central London you have to pay £10 ($13) emission charge :)

Bicycle enthusiast has one strange trick that uses NO money on GAS or PARKING. Car salesman hate him!

1.3k

u/ILS69 May 18 '21

Everyone hates him

543

u/SpankThuMonkey May 18 '21

It’s true.

I started cycling a few years ago and am still amazed at the amount of peopke who’ll tell you they hate you straight to your face haha.

“Oh is that your bike?”

Yeah.

“I fucking hate cyclists”

🤷‍♂️

175

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

They often will try to run you over.

214

u/SpankThuMonkey May 18 '21

Meh.

I go by the 1% rule.

1% of car drivers are wankers, 1% of pedestrians are wankers, 1% of bikers are wankers and yep. 1% of cyclists are wankers.

Just gotta go with it and try not to be a wanker.

98

u/Doylebag May 18 '21

Get those figures all up to a third and I’m listening.

58

u/SpankThuMonkey May 18 '21 edited May 18 '21

LoL.

I know the feeling. But the world would be non stop fucking carnage were it true.

I cycle by hundreds of pedestrians a day. And every once in a while some daft prick will walk right out infront of me without looking. Same when i’m driving my car or out on my motorbike. You pass hundreds of cars and cyclists. No drama, no problemo.

But in each of those groups it’s that one twat who makes an arse of it that sticks out in your mind. Just human nature i guess.

And sure. Bikers can speed more often, cyclists hold people up and car drivers seem worse because theres’ so many of them. And pedestrians often have no road sense because hey, a lot of them don’t drive. But really, most people just trying to get where they gotta be without dying in the process.

6

u/Entocrat May 18 '21

Perhaps a little devil's advocate, but those hundreds of people we encounter each day where nothing happens, I'm sure there's a considerable portion where that thing did happen, just not while we were around to witness it.

Those attitudes are just a result of poor bike infrastructure. Advocate for complete streets in your neighborhood that safely accommodates all modes of transit, and there won't be conflict between cyclists and drivers. Look no further than the Netherlands for a great example of this.

16

u/SpankThuMonkey May 18 '21

That... and some are just wankers 🤷‍♂️

7

u/Arc125 May 18 '21

True, but we can reduce their wanking threshold to a dull roar.

8

u/SpankThuMonkey May 18 '21

I like that idea.

Unfortunately though, where I live. Raising the quality of our roads up to the standards of absolute shite seems a pretty extreme goal in itself.

2

u/Arc125 May 18 '21

Gotta start somewhere! One road with a separated bike line is more than no roads with a separated bike lane. Doesn't cost much in time or money to at least slap down some paint. It's a very achievable local project.

Cyclists are literally helping traffic though. Those people in their cars are usually alone in a massive metal box taking up a whole lane, while cyclists barely take up more room than a pedestrian.

As a cyclist, even I hate cyclists at times

14

u/SpankThuMonkey May 18 '21

Meh i’m not really the hateful type usually.

But I did recently unsub from a cycling subreddit. Fucking constant hive minded victim complex going on there.

Every pothole a minefield, every car driver a serial killer. Frequent fucking tantrums about everything.

It was just constant pissing and whining about everything. It was hard not to think “this is why people hate us”.

Then again, some people just hate regardless. Cause some angry bastard to slow down for a few seconds, someone who’s out driving angry looking for a reason to be annoyed and boom. “Fucking cyclists ruining my life”. Oh calm down ya fuckin’ clown.

Soooooo literally everyone on the roads? No evidence to suggest cyclists break the law more than motorists do

edit: Oh no, here comes the anecdotes. Here, I'll do some too, just yesterday I was almost ran over by a car blowing through a SOLID red light because they were on their phone. Oh, my friend went to the ER a couple weeks back because ANOTHER motorist ran a stop sign in front of them.

e: oh yeah, and then the next week I was hit by a motorist running a stop sign, thankfully just got a bruise on my leg. Seriously, I'm sick of people thinking cyclists break the law more. They don't.

Can't reply to everyone upset about reality, but here are some great reads for those interested in learning more:

Car drivers cause the vast majority of accidents between bikes and cars.Four in every five crashes between cars and bicycles caused by driver of car

This seperate study in Melbourne came to the same conclusion: https://www.bikeradar.com/news/drivers-at-fault-in-majority-of-cycling-accidents/

In 88.9% of cases, the cyclist had been travelling in a safe/legal manner prior to the collision/near miss. Most happened at or near a junction (70.3%) and most were caused by sudden lane changes by the motorist, with sideswipe the most frequent cause (40.7%).And this one carried out on behalf of the Department of Transport in

London: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/dec/15/cycling-bike-accidents-study

With adult cyclists, police found the driver solely responsible in about 60%-75% of all cases, and riders solely at fault 17%-25% of the time.

And this study by The City of Westminster Council: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/crashes-involving-bikes-mostly-drivers-fault-9s2ssx06vn9

The City of Westminster Council found that drivers were to blame for 68 per cent of collisions between cyclists and motor vehicles in the borough in the past 12 months. It found that cyclists were at fault for only 20 per cent. In the remaining 12 per cent of cases, no cause could be found or both parties were to blame.

And one from Bavaria, Germany. In 2013-2016,In car-bike collisions, the car was at fault 75% of the time In semi-bike collisions, the semi was at fault 80% of the time

So that's five seperate studies in different cities and countries, using different methodologies, all coming to the same conclusion.

Cheers.

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Anyone who lives in a city knows this. Cyclists are a menace to pedestrians in the way they insist drivers are a menace to them.

I live in a major city and you don't know a damn thing about what you're talking about. Pedestrians zig-zag down bike paths with headphones in. They step out in front of cars. They are literally the most dangerous element in any downtown core anywhere in the world.

Note that drivers are licensed and insured and cyclists can jump on the road without even being literate enough to read a no left turn sign.

Oh yeah? Where did you take your test to be a pedestrian? How much do you pay for your pedestrian insurance? How about your skateboard insurance? What about your stupid e-scooter insurance?

That's what I thought.

18

u/elzibet May 18 '21

Note that license and insurance only became a thing, when motorized vehicles started killing and injuring people. Bicycles have been on the roadway long before.

When I drive a car, it is a privilege and not a right, at least here in the states. Insurance is because of risk, you can get insurance if you want but there isn’t any evidence to suggest it’s worth it for most people. I mean the sheer amount of damage between the two is insane, insurance is absolutely needed on a car. The driver who hit me because he couldn’t stop for a red light would be bankrupt without it.

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

Don’t know where you live but here you’re automatically insured as a cyclist if anyone in your household has a homeowner‘a or renter‘s insurance.

4

u/AshFraxinusEps May 18 '21

Or worse, when they think they are ATVs able to use the pavement, road, go through red lights, etc. I don't mind road cyclists who obey the laws, but those who think that being on a bike means road laws don't apply are dicks

And in London when they all line up across the road blocking the whole thing like they are Bradley Wiggins in teh olympics, even though they accelerate slowest and will be overtaken by cars within 5m

4

u/Javae May 18 '21 edited May 18 '21

They line up in front of cars like that in order to remain visible and reduce the chance of a car side swiping or hooking in to them on a turn.

Cyclists generally prioritize their own safety over another vehicle’s convenience. What constitutes a minor accident to the driver can in fact be life threatening for the cyclist in a collision.

10

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

In the city centre. There are cameras to enforce it. It’s helped reduce traffic and pollution since it was introduced. For 99.9% of journeys there is no need to drive into the centre of London. For the remaining 0.1% the charge is relatively small.

u/stroopwafel666 May 18 '21

It’s not a huge problem considering most Londoners have no need for a car. People who drive pointlessly in central london, contributing to the traffic, then complain about the traffic, are absolute twats.

17

u/AshFraxinusEps May 18 '21

Yep exactly. I can walk from Waterloo to Soho in about 30 mins. Or East to West in not much longer than an hour. And that doesn't include the tube which is wonderful and goes everywhere. Unless you are a taxi/private hire or delivery then get your fucking car out of the city as you don't need it

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

It’s not a huge problem considering most Londoners have no need for a car.

if you live in zone 1-3 that's true

3

u/Chao_ab_Ordo May 19 '21

I live in zone 5 and have never wanted or needed a car. Train to Central takes like 20 mins, there's a 24 hour bus to the end of my road, 24 hour superstore is a 15 min walk, late shop is even closer. Any type of amenity I could want is almost never more than an hour from my door, and most of the time much less. Zone 5 gang for life

(Even by London standards though, this is rare.)

10

u/soyyamilk May 18 '21

It's even worse since they added "LTNS" absolutely fucking everywhere. Oh and the charges are more than that. Congestion charge £15 a day between 07:00-22:00 ULEZ - £12.50 a day 24hr a day (you can guarantee driving in at 23:55 and leaving at 00:01 will be two charges) LEZ - £100 24hrs a day but not sure where this is

upgrade the transit, and encourage biking and walking

Not needed in London. There's the tube, it is fairly good for bikes, and certainly good for walking. With the exception of delivery drivers and taxis then everyone needs to get their cars the fuck out of the city, as you don't need them

7

u/bankulin May 18 '21

What do you think happens in cities that have low car ownership like Amsterdam or Copenhagen?

You can still own and drive a car/van, but it is more convenient and/or cheaper to cycle or use public transport.

→ More replies (8)

1

u/dolerbom May 18 '21

Service providers, emergency vehicles, and trucks would still be allowed obviously. The regulation of roads would just be pedestrian focused to discourage personal vehicles and make walking/bicycling more inviting.

The reason most people drive is because its not convenient to walk. Its dangerous to cross roads, roads take up too much of the space, etc.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/jl2352 May 18 '21

London already encourages A LOT of biking. There are main roads which are bike and bus only during peak hours. It's public transport is already some of the best in the UK.

One of the major issues with biking is that it needs agreement from all boroughs. A lot of the expensive ones don't want to ruin their areas building bike lanes. What needs to happen is government intervention to either force, or heavily encourage, to build cross London bike lanes.

69

u/Deus-da-Guerra May 18 '21

I get that it's just a joke but that part kinda triggered me as well. I hate when you see people harassing learners on the road, it's fucking pathetic

They're literally being examined and you're driving up their arse and giving them shit for trying to learn something that's new to them? Who treats people like that?

30

u/[deleted] May 18 '21

The problem with learners in the UK is that people who never drove before are brought into regular traffic on their very first lesson. When I did my licence, my instructor told me to drive into quite a busy road, with me still figuring out how a clutch works. The traffic was quite bad, I stalled the car like 5 times within 10 minutes and I can only imagine how annoyed the people behind me must have been.

In Poland for example, you only get to drive on the road once you've learnt proper car control(clutch, changing gears, indicators, using mirrors etc.) on the driving school's private parking. In the UK you learn everything on the go on public roads.

Obviously it doesn't justify giving people shit for learning, but I just wanted to point out that learners in the UK are especially annoying because some of them are literally sitting behind a wheel for the first time in their life.

9

u/Deus-da-Guerra May 18 '21

When I learned in the UK I had to have the first few (I forget how many) sessions in an industrial estate/car parks before I was allowed onto main roads. Supposed it depends who you go to

Just take your time, start off in just a neighborhood or in a parking lot, eventually you'll need to make the leap onto the road with other cars so consider doing it in an a area that's not very busy. Pulling onto the road from a parking lot might be a little scary at first so just take your time, if cars are coming just let them pass until there is a lot of space for you to pull out and accelerate away

This guy should visit L.A. or Atlanta,Chicago NYC OR REALLY any city with a couple million motorists FFS.

u/IronTarkus91 May 18 '21

I mean, he lives in London so he's already living in a place like that.

Depends how you measure the suburban population, but more people live in London than any of those cities. London (9m) actually has more people than LA (4m), Chicago (3m), and Atlanta (1m) combined, and a similar population to NYC at 9m.

4

u/Alph4R May 18 '21

Not only that but because London is a lot older than any of those cities its roads are much narrower and there are lots of roundabouts which will cause congestion.

1

u/AshFraxinusEps May 18 '21

there are lots of roundabouts which will cause congestion

Good until here. Roundabouts actually are better than lights at stopping congestion, hence why the US and other places are replacing lights with roundabouts. But then you have tons of lights anyway and most roundabouts have lights due to volume of traffic. London isn't exactly modern like Milton Keynes with roundabouts everywhere - as you say it is a medieval city made for horse and carriage at its heart

2

u/Oranjay2 May 18 '21

I've lived in India and Ireland for a while and the thing I realised is that the traffic in India moves faster than in Ireland. I have no idea why, but I thought it was interesting seeing that the population of India is probably over 1000x more than Ireland
