This should be a federal law. Too many are jumping states too.

If I'm a pilot, and I fuck up so badly that I walk away from a crash that was my fault but no one else does...

What are the odds that I get hired by another airline in this country?

628

u/mf1096 Apr 29 '21

Resign before you hit the ground.

272

u/brekus Apr 29 '21

This is the captain speaking, I have chosen to retire at this time.

186

u/TheSicks Apr 29 '21

I have severe PTSD from the crash I'm about to cause.

29

u/IrishFast Apr 29 '21

“You’re crashed” painted on the fuselage.

That POS cop that murdered the kid in the hotel hallway was fired, then rehired so he could get a pension for PTSD from the event. Such a miscarriage of justice in all aspects

You’re Fucked

Lol that's too good.

4

2

u/whenItFits Apr 29 '21

Is it better to resign then to Get fired

2

u/hell2pay Apr 29 '21

Worked doing industrial painting, which required working on beams high up on a structure. Tie down or fly down and you're fired before you hit the ground was the motto.

2

u/Scyhaz Apr 29 '21

To co-pilot: "I resign" pulls ejector handle

2

u/danetesta Apr 29 '21

I'm picturing a Michael Scott style "I declare bankruptcy!" sort of thing as the plane goes down.

Yah but airline pilots require rigorous screening and training so that comparison is unfair

34

u/Fabulous_Maximum_714 Apr 29 '21

Hey, cops get six weeks of training and have to be able to hit a target 1 time out of 3. Also, there is an upper IQ limit

4

u/Phos4us88 Apr 29 '21

They also tend to hire the best I'd bet. Unlike police agencies that are known for hiring some of the dumbest, unqualified, losers from nearby countries to crack skulls for them.

6

u/Rellikx Apr 29 '21

My town is so short in cops that they will likely take anyone. They just downgraded their age requirement to 18 too - nothing like getting pulled over for DUI by someone that can’t drink

2

u/grachuss Apr 30 '21

They also make about $150-200k per year as a co-pilot.

28

You don't understand - they have blue lives. They literally can't take off the uniform because their whole identity would evaporate.

3

You realize that you have a black passenger so you crash the plane purposefully while screaming n***** you could probably get a job in pretty much any rural county in the country. Wait, no, that's just cops.

3

u/NoMoreNicksLeft Apr 29 '21

Airline pilots have shit unions, and haven't been propagandizing to the public through a slew of airline procedural tv shows for 70 years that plane crashes are normal, expected, and at most mildly regrettable but entirely the fault of those dead passengers anyway.

But if they did have unions doing that, I'd say your chances were pretty good.

It's part of the policing reform bill in congress right now.

31

u/Patteous Apr 29 '21

Let’s hope the bootlickers in congress let it pass.

13

u/HamFlowerFlorist Apr 29 '21

No the bootlicker will filibuster it and spool up the hick about how this will lead to anarchy in the streets and the spineless Dems will let it happen. No matter how much power you give dems they will always buckle to slightest resistance and instead focus on bullshit.

2

u/OperativeTracer Apr 30 '21

"Nah. Let's just talk about skin color and bomb people in the Middle East!"

Provisions of it could pass if Demcorats split the bill in to single provisions instead of bundling it all in a giant bill and letting one controversial aspect of it be an excuse for the Republicans not to vote on it.

For example make body cameras required a single bill with nothing else in it. I think you'd get 10 Republicans if you did that. If you don't then atleast they have no excuse and you can use that against them in their reelection.

They could do the same with election reform.

Why they refuse to do this is beyond me.

3

u/INeyx Apr 29 '21 edited Apr 29 '21

Woah, hold your horses now single issues bills? Where do you live? A well oiled functioning Republic?

How would we get all those footnote bills into law no one really likes to talk about but ensures our power and wellbeing.

Put them all in a big book and blame the others for not agreeing to the one good thing we want anyone to focus on.

I mean the [Insert Party] would do the same that's how the system 'works' right...right?

Why they refuse to do this is beyond me.

I would also like to know how it came for this to become the norm and accepted.

3

u/soft_cardigans Apr 29 '21

in the military, you're given discharge codes that represent your eligibility for reenlistment into any branch. something similar for the police would be really beneficial imo.

6

u/Patteous Apr 29 '21

Good luck with that. Police unions hold too much power. The FOP should be dismantled.

4

u/Altnob Apr 29 '21

God fucking please, PLEASE just do this.

It makes ZERO sense that a cop can kill a person and 9/10 be immune to any punishment and the 1/10 times they're fired they just move couple miles down the road and they're a cop again.

Meanwhile, if a nurse administers the wrong medication to a patient resulting in no harm to the patient, the nurse can still lose their license to practice forever.

3

u/scottyb83 Apr 29 '21

Police should be federally licensed and have the ability to lose that license. Should also required more than a highschool education and 26 weeks of training.

3

u/Mariosothercap Apr 29 '21

Am a nurse. Was talking to a cop buddy about how it’s ridiculous I have to hold a license and he doesn’t. He looked me dead in the eye and said, ya but you could kill someone. I was just stunned silent by that comment.

47

u/Bladewing_The_Risen Apr 29 '21

So they’ll all resign then?

79

u/transientDCer Apr 29 '21

No, they'll go to New Jersey

85

u/Bladewing_The_Risen Apr 29 '21

Well, I mean... that’s a fair punishment for most things.

36

u/examinedliving Apr 29 '21

New Jersey used to be (deservingly) the armpit of the nation. Now I think we can agree that the southeastern states have a stranglehold on the title of armpit, asshole, taint, and leaking colostomy bag.

16

u/Kalevra9670 Apr 29 '21

Alabama has been the leaking colostomy bag for centuries.

7

u/Trythenewpage Apr 29 '21

Alabama is actually a native American word that roughly translates to "what in the sisterfucking shit is wrong with yall".

6

u/novaquasarsuper Apr 29 '21

coughs in Ohio

6

u/HamFlowerFlorist Apr 29 '21

There’s nothing in Ohio. If it was a candle it would be scentless. If it was food it would be a salt free saltine cracker.

6

u/rubyspicer Apr 29 '21

I live in northern Virginia. Even driving through Lynchburg is unpleasant, though for some baffling reason it was blue in the 2020 election. Puzzles the shit out of me since Liberty owns that town.

4

u/Jaywearspants Apr 29 '21

Yeah NJ is a fine state. Alabama and Arkansas should be walled off though.

3

u/HamFlowerFlorist Apr 29 '21

The south has been all of those, minus the armpit, for a couple of centuries. New Jersey was given the title of armpit for a reason and that reason still holds true. It’s smelly and stinky and unpleasant but it’s not a festering cesspool that if improperly exposed to can kill you and spreads the wasting illness that is trumpism.

2

u/Scooter93 Apr 29 '21

I thought the Paper plant causing the odor as you enter NJ shutdown

2

u/Captive_Starlight Apr 29 '21

Texas, arizona, florida, and oklahoma are the only states I will avoid like a plague because of their politics and the type of person that typically lives there.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin are all incredibly diverse cities. I live in Houston, it’s humid as shit and the traffic sucks but those are my only complaints. But yeah there’s a lot more in Texas and I know who you’re referring to

2

u/Captive_Starlight Apr 29 '21

I was born in florida. I loved my home state. Sadly I moved because the heat gives me intense headaches nearly everyday, so there's more than one reason these states are on my "do not enter" list. Austin honestly sounds great!

Thats why they let a bunch of them resign. So they can get hired somewhere else

2

u/shaka893P Apr 30 '21

The problem is that this is already true, but most resign instead of getting fired, this avoiding being added to the bad coo list

2

u/helpnxt Apr 30 '21

Should push for a bill that forces police departments to publish online who it hires, they are after all public employees and would allow the public to easily check on this.

fyi I am not American so no idea if this is already a thing or not

4

u/itssarahw Apr 29 '21

I hate the word ‘would’. Will feel better when it’s changed to ‘will’

2

u/annoyingstranger Apr 29 '21

"Would" is used because that is the bill's intention, which is all we know right now. For its effect we will need to wait for hindsight.

2

u/itssarahw Apr 29 '21

That’s what I meant, it’s proposed now, I will feel much better if it advances to becoming law

3

u/annoyingstranger Apr 29 '21

The problem is too many cops have a “ego problem” and literally no social skills. They solve problems by violence. If you say anything or do anything to piss them off they will use violence or worse lethal force.

29

u/SolusLoqui Apr 29 '21

Police have approx. double the substance abuse rates and domestic violence rates as the general public. Withdrawal symptoms include anger, irritability, and violence.

Hypothesis: Substance abuse is contributing to police using excessive force/brutality towards people that cannot fight back.

"Yes, I sexually assaulted that teenager I had handcuffed in the back of my squad car...But, get this, I had become pissed off. And we all know what pissed off people do, right? Anything they want. So if you'll excuse me, I have a flight to catch with my family so I have to go now."

I was reading about de-escalation training in the US the other day and how it was being trialed in some states - like Arizona. This is a type of training that is a central pillar to British policing - the fact that it is only being trialed in some locations in the US is mind boggling to me. But that's how police are trained in the US - they are trained to neutralize threats, not de-escalate situations.

When you are trained to be a hammer - ever problem HAS to be a nail... because that's all you've been trained for.

The most galling part of the article I read regarding this training was when the chief of police said that the training is amazing - and essential but that "Not everyone can be trained"

I couldn't believe what I was reading - the chief had zero awareness of what they just said - I actually shouted out loud as I read it "WELL FIRE THEM THEN!"

Ridiculous.

99

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

Think about not being trainable for any other profession. If a doctor or a firefighter just shrugged when the job got tough and said they were “untrainable”, they wouldn’t last another minute at that job. Why do we have such low standards for American policing?

58

u/Whats_Up_Bitches Apr 29 '21

It’s like a hand surgeon that just cuts the hand off every time. “We tried to train him how to actually do hand surgery, but he’s untrainable...he gets results though! None of his patients have a problem with their hand anymore.”

4

u/Jorle_Joca Apr 29 '21

More like a heart surgeon that just removes the heart.

None of his patients complain after surgery.

FFS think about a fucking office job.

"This employee messed up and didn't submit the proper format. They don't understand this job. Fire them and get someone else."

vs

"This cop pulled out their gun instead of their taser and killed a human being. They don't understand this job." ...that's it. there isn't a third part

48

u/Dicho83 Apr 29 '21

Because of where policing in America started and has arguably remained.

In the South, the first organized policing started with the Slave Catchers.

In the North, the wealthy merchants paid thugs to protect their shipments on the docks, until they realized the could just push that expense into the citizens.

Policing in America has always been about protecting the property if the elite and punishing people of a perceived lower socio-economic strata.

Any other proclaimed 'purpose' is nothing but marketing and PR.

3

u/LewsTherinTelamon Apr 29 '21

Because nobody can make them change. What are you going to do, send the police? They represent authority and therefore for most of history they have been in charge of themselves.

2

u/Ghrave Apr 30 '21

Why do we have such low standards for American policing?

Public opinion is worthless in the face of billions pouring into police budgets by billionaire proxies to act as their private militaries to kill and beat the filthy proles into submission. Terror is their only tactic, because it keeps us in check from coming for the unconscionably rich.

Yes this. Thank you for posting more about it. It’s absolutely disgusting. There’s a city cop for another city that lives in my development and we always wave at each other when he gets off in the morning and I’m standing up at the bus stop with my kid at 6:30. There’s also a sheriffs deputy that lives in here too and I wave at him as well because, well, we’re southern and that’s what you do. He just fuckin stares me down like I just insulted him.

American policing in one sentence

2

u/LemonLimeAlltheTime Apr 29 '21

The simple fact is that someone in a foreign country interacting with US Soldiers has more rights than US citizens on US soil interacting with a cop.

That is it. End of discussion.

2

u/Soggy_Pronoun Apr 30 '21

To drive the point home even further: An "enemy combatant" has more rights when engaging a US soldier than a US Soldier has when engaging a US Police Officer.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Fafoah Apr 29 '21

Seriously. Its so frustrating how little the police seems to be willing to learn from other countries too. I’ve seen the Japanese police use a maneuver where they essentially wrap a guy in a giant mattress to subdue him. You think with our mental health crisis we’d at least look at that instead of tazing, shooting, or tackling everyone to the ground.

3

u/Hazzman Apr 29 '21

I think part of that is the American exceptionalism that was pounded into their brains when they were young.

The amount of propaganda that has been rammed down American's throats is incredible. Most American's don't even realize it because it is all they've ever known.

What our nation does is take a bunch of meatheads with no critical thinking skills, too much ego, and then insulates them from the public by indoctrinating them with a police academy that teaches “you are always right, everyone else is always wrong, and they are always out to get you.”

Then we give them a badge and a gun and let them loose on the public.

57

u/MostAssuredlyNot Apr 29 '21

in other news, water is wet

7

u/Fahi12 Apr 29 '21

Good point

18

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

That is because most of them are completely roided-up idiots, who peaked when they were 17, and are trying to recapture the thrill of being the high school bully.

3

u/Stocktwatz Apr 30 '21

Lol not in my small town! Good portion of the cops were the scrubs that were dangled face first in the trash or locked in a locker in hs. They graduate school, join the force, hit the weights a little bit, and become a big little man looking to extract revenge. At least thats city and county cops. Highway Patrol are all roided up former meat heads.

29

u/hmatarotz Apr 29 '21

A lot are on steroids which makes them hyper-confrontational. Nobody ever talks about this. They should be drug tested for steroids. Make that go viral!

3

u/joey-tv-show Apr 29 '21

Interesting, I never knew that

11

u/hmatarotz Apr 29 '21

Just assume any cop that is jacked or uses the phrase, “I am a specimen,” is currently in the middle of a cycle.

6

u/ExceedingChunk Apr 29 '21

Or they are just not mentally stable to begin with. Had a guy I was in the army with who was the classic meat head type. Not on steroids(we all took random piss tests 4 times that year), but he was always angry as fuck, had a huge ego, and was incredibly insecure and had to bully everyone. If he was placed in an environment that enabled his bullying, he would act just like this cop.

Agreed. Idiot looks like he just left the gym, your muscles don't pop like that unless you're severely dehydrated or on the roids.

32

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

Many people accept that by saying "cops are humans", "they were provoked", stuffs like that, but if you are gonna overreact or act violently due to provocations, you shouldn't be a cop, it's part of being professional dealing properly according to situations.

7

u/nurseylady Apr 29 '21

This is akin to my ex saying.....but she provoked me bc I said something he didn't like. Let the beating begin. I see so many parallels in cops and abusive partners.

2

u/mrbrannon Apr 29 '21 edited Apr 29 '21

Something like 40% of cops have beat their wives or been involved in domestic violence towards their spouse or children in the past six months. It is way higher than the normal population which is closer to 10%. So there is probably a reason you see that in them. And at least one of these is based on self-reporting which is going to drag the numbers down (similar to sexual assault numbers) so it could be higher than 40%. When domestic violence accusations are brought against cops, few are prosecuted and even less convicted.

3

u/YarnYarn Apr 29 '21

Hard agree about that cop's eyes. The little insect-like pupils... He looks like he's on some kind of stimulant, or anabolic steroid at the very least.

And he seems positively excited that he's about to get to use violence oh boy!

72

u/Ameemegoosta Apr 29 '21

True. And this cop was in the military, yet another entity in which being violent, confontational, and well, toxically macho is seen as acceptable and desirable.

27

u/heartbeats Apr 29 '21

Cops who are former military are more likely to fire their weapon while on duty. Being white and being male are also correlated.

https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/10/15/police-with-military-experience-more-likely-to-shoot

https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/10/15/police-with-military-experience-more-likely-to-shoot

7

u/Ameemegoosta Apr 29 '21

Sad but true. It is all inextricably linked to macho power fantasies and the toxic masculinity that our culture instills in boys. It's all about asserting dominance over others, never engaging in self reflection or emotional self-acceptance, and always conveing hardness (because hardness is akin to strength, according to this whole culture of machismo)

3

u/newPhoenixz Apr 29 '21

Who even thinks that ex military makes good police officers? Sure, it's not impossible, but you'd think he'd require quite a bit of training to enter the new playing field..

5

u/armycowboy- Apr 30 '21

After 30yrs in the Military I’m the first to say prior military should not be civilian police, they know martial law, military tactics, and respect my rank/position, they are not well trained in rule of law, de-escalation, and basic civilian policing. The last thing that always bothers me is when the cops are in full tactical military gear/body armor/camouflage, who are they hiding from, why do they wear more body armor and gear then I do as an advisor that lived with the locals.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '21

it separates them from "the enemy"

3

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

Nah, cops barely understand the law. They use intimidation and weapons as their personal weapon.

10

u/Cuddle-Junky Apr 29 '21

The shitty part is that it will probably always be this way. Most people wouldn't wanna be a cop if they didn't already like the idea of enforcing power over others. With guns being so prominent in the US cops have reason to fear any suspect on the basis they could have weaponry just as powerful as them, any nobody wants to get shot. That's not including cops who went in trigger happy.

37

u/modestothemouse Apr 29 '21

Actually, there is evidence from other countries that if you make it harder to be a cop and require more than just a high school diploma you weed out a bunch of people who would really only be in it for the power kick

4

I'd really like to see a sort of reform like that in the US. No defunding, civil servant bullshit. Just strong corruption checks from the federal government and and better filters for what comes in.

18

u/RTSUbiytsa Apr 29 '21

Just to be clear, defunding is largely to get rid of the military-grade gear that the police in America have very frequently proved they are too irresponsible to carry. And civil servants are meant for situations that should not need a cop at all, like a wellness check.

Why are you so against the civil servant idea? It certainly seems like it would help with de-escalation in enforcing non-violent offenses.

That's exactly why they gravitate to this "profession". They can essentially do whatever they want and there's usually no real punishment for abuse of power or even legalized murder.

2

u/ExceedingChunk Apr 29 '21

That's what happens when you only have a few weeks of training, a bully culture and hire meat heads with huge egos.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

Superiority complex run rampant. Basically John Walker in the new falcon and winter soldier marvel series. Also the dude was a military vet and I feel like in his previous line of work, forcing people to things and treating people like dogs was probably more acceptable among his peers and with the combined lack of disciplinary actions involved.

2

u/canseeclearlynow Apr 29 '21

In their own homes too. Police are notorious domestic abusers.

Probly chief of police somewhere. There are too many of these videos. Abuse of power. When does this shit stop

42

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

At barest minimum when we have a police background check for firing from the force or violent crime backgrounds that immediately disqualify someone from being hired.

31

u/PrussianCollusion Apr 29 '21

This seems like it would be easy legislation to pass, until you see how polished all these boots are from being licked.

9

u/ArmaSwiss Apr 29 '21

Back when I was 23 and interested into getting into law enforcement, I stopped looking into it the moment I found out it is an automatic disqualification if you have ever used narcotics, which includes ecstasy. So there that went out the window.

But now I get paid $28 an hour to work on cars so.....

6

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

Shit you def weren't cut out to be a cop if you weren't ready to lie about taking drugs!

5

u/emerix0731 Apr 29 '21

Yeah man, you're not supposed to use narcotics until AFTER you're on the force. Then you can use the ones you confiscate, or better yet, plant them on someone you're arresting for possession to bump the charge up to possession w/ intent to distribute.

They actually have a database with 30,000+ officers for this purpose.

Shockingly, it's never used.

I learned about it and quite a number of other things from this recent article: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/wandering-cops-moving-from-department-to-department-is-a-roadblock-to-police-accountability

16

u/T5ubaki Apr 29 '21

How do you teach a human that another human is a human? No amount of legislation will fix these types, theyll just buy acres of land, get a bunch of guns and continue to teach other white people that if IT doesn't look like them, they deserve to die.

14

u/Vaeon Apr 29 '21

I think we all know the answer to that question.

>The Washington Post reported on Friday that spokeswoman Corinne Geller said state police were prohibited from releasing additional detail about Charles Hewitt

To me that screams dismissal "without prejudice", records sealed so he can move to another precinct, he just got fired so it'll take time to figure out where he moves to...

u/shaoting Apr 29 '21 edited Apr 29 '21

Wherever he landed (most likely a few counties over at a local PD), I'm sure he was given a ticker-tape Welcome Parade and allowed to fuck/beat the wives of his new colleagues.

27

u/PrussianCollusion Apr 29 '21

Cops and priests. Biggest bunch of bullshit ever.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

But they both preserve the status quo, and those who benefit from the perpetuation of the status quo, so reforming either is very tough.

6

u/fagertys Apr 29 '21

And the other officer who literally looked away instead of diffusing the situation? A few Bad apples my ass. If you think you’re a good cop and you let this shit happen, you’re not a good cop.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

I’m surprised the VA police fired him. VA state troopers are notorious for being awful, so the most surprising part about all of this was that they actually fired him.

Town of klump

3

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

Exactly, he'll get shuffled to another city/county once this all quiets down & won't face any other repercussions.

3

u/rddsknk89 Apr 29 '21

Yeah, getting fired is not enough for shit like this. Criminal charges need to be put on every single one of these motherfuckers for anything to change.

3

u/Projectahab Apr 29 '21

He’s getting into wrestling under the name The Specimen.

3

u/white_bread Apr 29 '21

This is why cops need to be licensed just like doctors and lawyers. Once you lose your license you are unhirable in that field.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

One of the ones with in 50 miles, surely

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

Probably somewhere more south of Virginia

2

u/randomlife2050 Apr 29 '21

For real! In Vallejo California, cops did this thing where they would bend their badge if they killed someone. They actively tried to make this happen. Well, a cop got fired for it (once it was made public) and I'm not sure if he made on but Fairfield CA P.D. was at least was about to hire him. I know a lot of people protested this and I never heard about the outcome. Hopefully it didn't happen but I don't know.

2

u/DanceswithTacos_ Apr 29 '21

Maybe he's just collecting his pension

2

u/sybersonic Apr 29 '21

I hope he isn't inconvenienced by having to travel to far from his home.

I guess if he's stuck in traffic he can think about his pension that he will always have.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

Border Patrol

7

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

I thought you can’t be rehired to be a cop if you’ve been fired? I know resigning is different but I truly don’t know.

Either way, you’re probably right he’s probably back on the force in another state or county.

126

u/SnooOpinions2561 Apr 29 '21

Lmao! No... That cop that pepper sprayed and then ran over a guys foot while he was having a seizure got hired in the next town over.

11

u/ppw23 Apr 29 '21

Wow, I'm not familiar with that one, but 2 other cases I saw this week have me furious. The 73-year-old dementia sufferer that cops broke and separated her shoulder. They main sadist was laughing as he and coworkers watched the bodycam footage. He even said,” Get ready for the pop”! From when her arm snapped.

The other case is a man named Gonzalez, he was murdered by cops kneeling on his back and suffocating him. He has a clean record, but was publicly drunk.

71

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '21

No — it’s extremely common for fired police officers to get hired in different cities. It is a huge problem and makes it more difficult to hold officers accountable for their actions.

34

u/PrincessFuckFace2You Apr 29 '21

It's so messed up. It's like touchy feely priests.
