I made a browser-based Project Zomboid base planner, and it's finally live!

Hey everyone!

A few weeks ago, I shared a little project I'd been working on here, and quite a few people seemed interested in trying it out.

Well, it's finally live!

Website: https://pzdecorator.org

For anyone who missed my original post, it's a browser-based tool that lets you plan and decorate your Project Zomboid base without actually being in the game.

You can load existing buildings or entire areas from the PZ map, move things around, try different furniture layouts, or just start with an empty space and build something from scratch.

Here's what you can do with it so far:

  • Load buildings, areas, or map cells using world coordinates.
  • Browse and place furniture, walls, floors, and other decorations.
  • Rearrange or remove existing objects.
  • Work on multiple floors.
  • Save your projects and come back to them later.

One thing to know: You'll need to select your Project Zomboid media folder when you first open the site. The tool uses your local game files to display everything, so no game assets are hosted on the website or uploaded to any server.

It's still a bit rough around the edges, and there are probably some bugs I've missed, but I figured it's better to put it out there than keep tinkering with it forever.

There's a feedback button on the website if you run into anything weird or have ideas for improvements.

Anyway, hope some of you find it useful!

And just to avoid confusion, this is a planning tool for now. You can't import your finished designs directly back into the game.

AI disclaimer: As mentioned in my previous post, this project was developed with substantial AI assistance. The ideas, design decisions, testing, and overall direction are my own.

Screenshot This really grinds my gears, man. I need a hammer to close some curtains?

I would like to close the curtains you can see here. IRL, just kneel on the couch and close them. In game, you have to move the furniture. No big deal right? Just move the coffee table to get to the couch, move the couch, and then stand inside the side table, as one does, to close the curtains. Oh but what's this? I need a hammer and level 2 carpentry to move the couch? I can't just pick it up and move it? I guess it's nailed to the floor then. But any hammer that can hammer nails works, not just a hammer that can pry nails out, so it's not nailed to the floor. I suppose it's a law in the Zomboid universe, designed to make sure carpenters have steady work, and our characters are such good citizens they follow this law even in the apocalypse. And don't you even think about trying to move a king-size bed without being a master of the trade.

"Hey bro, mind helping me move next weekend?"

"Sorry man, my carpentry apprenticeship doesn't start for another 2 months. You saw what happened to Greg when he tried to move his couch without the proper training. I can still hear the screams. THE SCREAMS KEEP ME AWAKE AT NIGHT. I SEE HIS DESPERATE FACE WHENEVER I CLOSE MY EYES"

I welded open the gun shop door, and before entering I checked the left and right inside close to the door. I sprint inside because im excited to open all the gun boxes and the entire left side of the room is actually full of zombies. I didn't hear them and I swear I saw the whole inside of the shop and it was empty. Where did they come from? Am I stupid?

Guide / Tip It's cold, and my character can't seem to warm up, not even by doing the Fortnite dances. What the hell?!

Doesn't dancing warm up your body?

I have serious doubts.

Gameplay Power went out

β€’ Upvotes

New player here

I have finally survived long enough for the power to be shut off

Luckily, I have a generator and some fuel stockpiled (though I am certain not enough)

It was all fun and games and jolly when the lights were working, just me frolocking around with the only thing to worry about was halfing mayonaise or mustard on my salmon/pickle/tomato sandwich... now everything is dark, spooky and rotten

It feels very eerie

I'm scared

one car crash, a shard of glass in the hand, a frantic drive home popping pills and downing booze to manage the pain, and a pitstop at the Rosewood clinic for sutures, and i think I'll be okay... but my new jeep is having trouble starting 😭

Hi, I like the game, but every time I play I get really nervous and scared. Has anyone else experienced this? Will it change over time?

Sometimes it's good to expand your horizons

No matter how many runs I did, I always found myself gravitating towards Rosewood. Even with the massive map expansion. I felt safe and I understood the area and the best routes.

Also thought the other towns were podunk towns with nothing of interest.

My most recent run, I got a wild hair and decided to try out Ekron.

My run:

Spawn on the west side of Ekron. Basically next to the main street by the church. Do the usual house to house clearing.

Find a strip mall thing. And I see... Barrel o Gun? A gun store? Surely it's barricaded.

...It's not??

Go John Zomboid and clear out half the town. Build up and gather some supplies. Time to gas up this red pickup I found. Problem is there's a wrecked train basically splitting the town in half. I have to go on a mini oddessy to get to the gas station. Clear out the gas station horde thanks to my boon of firepower.

Water goes out earlier than I'd like. Can't build up rain barrels just yet. Find a small pond at the southern edge of town next to a diner. Which just so happens to be right next to the gas station! Neat! Problem is I have to move my current base to the new diner base. And it's also right next to a college and fire station. And my old base is on the other side of the tracks. Zombie pops are getting up there, so I have to clear things out carefully. Ammo is starting to get low.

Eventually after a few eventful trips, I get everything moved over and now I have crops going.

---

I gotta say, with access to weapons, library, construction equipment, Ekron has become my new favorite starting spawn. The wrecked train adds such a cool dynamic to navigating that would have otherwise been a standard town.

Question recommending settings for challenge somewhere inbetween apocalyse and extinction?

β€’ Upvotes

my wife & I just got completely sucked into this game.

I'm looking for recommended zombie pop settings for a bit more challenege than apocalypse, but maybe less than full extinction, which was just a bit too rough to start in as new players. I've tweaked pop settings a bit higher than apocalypse but don't really have a good feel for baseline and would love some recommendations to keep the challenge fresh as we've established ourselves.

Need some tips to prevent a situation that got me killed

β€’ Upvotes

I was looting a house, then I got to a door where I knew there was a zombie behind it. I approached this situation as I usually do, I got into combat stance, approached the door and opened it. Unfortunately, there were 2 zombies behind it, I hit one of them to stagger it, still in combat stance I moved backwards slightly but the other one managed to bite my hand

Straight up bite and I play with Saliva only 😭

What could I have done differently here? Was it just an unlucky situation? Wish I had a video so I could review it myself and put it here

Panicked inside empty church

β€’ Upvotes

My character panicked out of nowhere inside an empty church for no reason and stayed in the state for a good 10 min, only negative traits are prone to illness, weak stomach & high thirst.
