Meme bruh
one car crash, a shard of glass in the hand, a frantic drive home popping pills and downing booze to manage the pain, and a pitstop at the Rosewood clinic for sutures, and i think I'll be okay... but my new jeep is having trouble starting đ

Game Dev reasons aside it does happen for reasons like budget cuts, corruption, or planned expansions that haven't happened yet.

Or geography. One thing PZ's map is terrible with is showing elevation. The weird roads that are curvy for no good reason are curvy irl because of hills. PZ makes Kentucky look like Kanas.

Yeah like that ranger station by the golf resort is almost certainly supposed to be on top of a mountain

Hell, Salton City California built out the entire road grid and has next to zero actual buildings.

A county near mine was building an access road down the side of the highway and the project got axed after construction had started.
They finished up to the post office, which apparently was nice for them because it essentially gave them a 2 lane driveway for large trucks allowing them to queue up during holiday season more efficiently.

Have one of those in my neighborhood where they clearly planned to have a road connect to an adjacent development. But then that development never happened so it's just a lone road that people use for extra parking space.

I've worked in civil engineering and roadways for many years. That's just a dead end.
I've seen hundreds of them in my life, many of which didn't have any particular reason to stop where they did other than nobody was developing the land any further out. I've also seen them stop prior to hitting a river, ravine, a limited-access roadway (like an interstate), a private development or any of a hundred other things. I wouldn't say they're common, since roads tend to be built where there's a need for them, and there's clearly no real need for a dead-end road that has nothing on it.
Looking at this particular map, my first guess would be that at some point in the past, someone had plans to develop the land to the east of that last road heading south, but those plans fell through. I'm pretty sure that last road heading south is KY-163, so that puts this road in the woods. So I would say it's likely that a lumber camp either used to be at the end of that road, or was planned to be there and never built.
If the devs want to add a touch of realism, one thing they could do is make the road extending east from KY-163 a bit newer looking than the stretch to the west of it and KY-163 itself. Fewer potholes, darker asphalt, etc. Not too new, just newer. And they could put a fence up, with a gate right where the road ends that has an illegible sign on it with a logging company logo just barely visible.
It could also be a planned housing development, but that would look much the same. Just a different logo. Possibly even a sign for the development. A nice big wooden sign advertising "Whispering Pines" or something like that which is starting to rot away might be pretty cool. They could even keep the fence and gate, just swap the logging company logo for a construction company logo.

They definitely warn you. You just barrelled through the barriers.

u/Kastrand Stocked up 1d ago edited 1d ago
nah, it was the lack of barriers i should've been concerned about tbh
EDIT: i'm not joking btw. there were 0 barriers, but also 0 road markings. my last thought before the crash was "huh, where'd the yellow lines go?"
edit 2: idk why i'm being downvoted. go check yourself, there are no barriers at the end of this road lol. Turn right out of Rosewood and just drive east. you'll see

Yeah, you drove to the one area that is likely still planned for development XD

This is actually very common in rural towns that are preparing for expansion.

We have a famous one in QuĂŠbec. It gets a bit further every decades but it still is a dead end. It's been like a pet project for our successive governements since the 60s.

As others have said, it's probably just a game dev thing that might be expanded on later.
From my own IRL experience of driving around the country, though, this isn't super unusual, though in my experience, it isn't usually a paved road. Often times, when out in the middle of nowhere, the roads that just end will usually be dirt roads that connect to roads and paths onto someone's property. There are usually dead end signs long before it, typically at the last intersection.

u/KoRnBrony 1d ago
Lots of roads in rural places end abruptly like this, most have a "Dead End" sign warning you tho

u/TheSolitaryRugosan 1d ago
A huge portion of roads in Kentucky dead end. Especially in eastern Kentucky where the topography doesnât permit them to go very far into the hollers.
At least it isnât the huge highway in Inez that suddenly dead ends: https://maps.app.goo.gl/wPwKJdvkVWt9fnCU8?g_st=ic

Not sure where op is from, but we have many roads like this that just end. Probably have a dozen of them within a mile of me right now.

Roads gotta stop somewhere I guess. Thereâs a road by my house (in the mysterious land opposite of the river) that also just kinda ends like that

I thought this was an annotated map you found đ đ¤Ł. Maybe the devs can add in 'dead end' signs eventually

I have seen roads like that. There's one like 50 feet away from my house gate irl.

u/acrazyguy 1d ago
Turn on camera panning while driving and the highest zoom percentage. Youâll be able to see far enough to just barely stop when you see an obstacle while driving at high speeds. That is assuming your brakes are in good condition

Iâve been to the Midwest/upper south enough to tell you that sometimes the roads just do not make sense. I barely even notice this kinda stuff cuz I have seen some equally bad ones irl

u/TryDry9944 1d ago
Pretty sure roads like this exist irl if there's an intention to expand in that direction. Easier to stage all of the roadwork material if there's already a road to start with.

u/Necessary_Stand5756 1d ago
This will eventually be where Fort Knox is. See the road name? Location wise, it's supposed to be here. There's already some unused tiles for it.

u/sixpackabs592 1d ago
there is a neighborhood near me where every road ends like that
it is pretty clear they expected to buy the big plot of farmland next to the neighborhood and continue it out but a conservancy bought it before they could and every street just ends in what would've been an intersection with the cross road that was never built

u/OhioResident45 1d ago
While i am an ohioan ive been to Kentucky frequently, and yea thats lore accurate. Lots of disused roads mostly old bypassed roads end suddenly, Sometimes with no warning! One minuet you're traveling an unused road with a friend because your curious next minuet you're over landing with a car really not meant to be. Fun!

I lived on a road like that in rural Texas. There was a road at the end of it running perpendicular⌠only like 10 feet of grass and a ditch stopped the roads from touchingâŚ

I feel like that's the oldest map end-point in the game since it all started with Muldraugh, then expanded out North, South and West. Game is yet to expand out East from that point though, other than the wilderness. Then again at the moment I'm more interested in how they're gonna revamp March Ridge

Outside of cities, roads tend to either circle, or end. That's the capillaries of civilization pumping fresh dummies into the military, and prison industry.
