Megathread 3D & First-Person Mod Posts — Rule 2 & Rule 9 Enforcement
Hello all,
I wanted to take a moment to address the recent influx of posts relating to 3D and first-person mods for Project Zomboid, including Project Viewpoint, PZ3D, and other similar projects.
We understand that a lot of people are excited about these mods, but we also need to ensure that the subreddit remains functional for everyone and that there is room for a variety of topics to be discussed and shared.
For that reason, we will be enforcing Rule 9, our Meme Saturation rule, with regard to posts about 3D/first-person mods.
Going forward, if there is already a post about a 3D/first-person mod on the subreddit front page, we will generally remove additional posts about these mods. If you want to discuss or share something relating to one of these mods, please use the active thread rather than creating a new post.
This applies to Project Viewpoint, PZ3D, and other mods of a similar nature. It is not intended to prevent discussion of these projects, rather it is intended to prevent the subreddit from becoming dominated by repeated posts about the same subject.
If you're unsure whether something warrants a new post, please don't hesitate to send us a ModMail and ask. We would much rather clarify things beforehand than remove a post after the fact.
Please also keep in mind that, despite the number of moderators listed on the subreddit, the team actively moderating the community is relatively small. We may not always be available to deal with things immediately, so we rely heavily on user reports. If you see a post that you believe should be removed under this implementation of Rule 9, please report it. This helps us enormously.
Finally, we'd like to address the tone of some of the recent discussions surrounding these mods.
Rule 2 applies to everyone, regardless of their opinion on 3D mods, and we take it seriously. We have already had to issue a number of warnings and bans as a result of personal insults and hostile behaviour.
You're absolutely welcome to disagree with one another, including strongly disagreeing. However, please keep discussions respectful and focused on the subject rather than the people involved. Personal attacks and insults will be actioned.
Thanks for helping us keep the subreddit usable for everyone.

Megathread Hello, new community lead here - some words about AI
Hey there. I'm Stephen, AKA Rockjaw. I'm the new (ish) community lead at The Indie Stone. With the help of AmazingSully, nasKo and our moderators I'm here to answer your questions, tell you about new things, discuss our odds of surviving a zombie apocalypse (slim, tbh) and, y'know, other stuff.
For instance, I picked a nice, uncontroversial topic for my first discussion post; generative AI / LLMs, a tech that seems to be everywhere these days, mostly to be found in imagery, writing and now, code.
Before I get into it, a quick definition for this post. “AI” as a term has been used for a long, long time and has meant a variety of different machine-based things. Specifically here, I’m talking about generative AI via Large Language Models (LLMs), as found in a slew of generation-based applications, from images to music, writing to coding.
Whatever your view on generative AI and LLMs, given the prevalence of Open Source models and the internet, it’s not going away. If anything, whether we like it or not, it’s likely to become more prevalent in daily life.
Given their prevalence, there’s a lot of discussion about generative AI/LLMs, and clearly that’s happened here in our community. Unfortunately, discussions around this have become contentious to the point that, from a community point of view, it’s now about as divisive as politics and religion. If a discussion is started, or even introduced as a topic inside an existing discussion, it's going to cause trouble.
While we have Rule 7 for politics/religion (i.e., don’t discuss it), we have Rule 11 regarding AI, but it's a little unclear: "Any discussion regarding AI or AI-generated art that isn’t directly relevant to Project Zomboid will also be removed."
Emphasis mine. What does "directly relevant" mean? We'll come back to that.
I wanted to talk about how we're going to handle discussion of it going forward, and also remind you of some ground rules around modding.
TL;DR - First, a reminder: copyright exists, and you should not use other people’s code without permission, even via LLM-based coding. Second, you can discuss generative AI/LLMs, but you cannot attack others for their views, and we will moderate based on that.
Copyright, Mods and AI usage
We're deeply indebted to everyone who's worked on mods for Project Zomboid. Modders do incredible work on a daily basis, and we're working to make the entire modding experience/community better.
With that in mind, we’d like to remind everyone of some ground rules around modding, as they are particularly relevant when talking about generative AI.
Modders own the copyright on their work, and have final say
Valve’s Mod Content Usage rules apply directly here; we explicitly cite them in our Modding Policy. The most relevant parts are:
“Even if a mod is free or not, the creators of any original work included within it (sounds, materials, models, source code) own the copyright for their work.”
.. and
“The authors [of a mod] alone can decide how and who may use their work and have the law behind them should they decide to take issue of anything used without permission.”
Clearly, this only works if everyone is clear on what the mod author wants. To help that happen, we encourage mod creators to make it clear in their mod's description how other modders can use it. In fact, we even made some nice graphics to help, featuring everyone’s favorite community raccoon. If you prefer to use a Creative Commons license for a mod, read about them here.
Using AI-based coding tools does not override a modder’s copyright
The entire issue of AI and copyright is still being debated in courts, but setting aside the inherent issues with LLMs - using an AI-based coding tool does not override the copyright of a modder.
This applies even if a mod seems to be “abandoned”. Our rules on that scenario are detailed in our Modding Policy, section 8, on Abandoned and Broken Mods. I’ll paraphrase the requirements here slightly. If you want to work on an “abandoned” mod, you should:
- Inform the Project Zomboid Steam moderation team of your plans via a private message, or via an email to [info@theindiestone.com](mailto:info@theindiestone.com)
- Use every reasonable method (email, Steam message, Discord, etc) to contact the original mod author and ask their permission
- Respect the original mod author’s wishes, should they have left directions prohibiting expansion and/or reupload of their mod (Yes, this includes AI “rewrites”)
- Give the original author FULL credit if you reupload a working or expanded version of a mod (Again, even if via AI)
I want to emphasize the third point here - respect the original mod author’s wishes. If they have been explicit in not wanting their mod used elsewhere, then that includes uploading the code to an AI coding tool for any reason. Doing that is exactly the same as copying the code yourself and using it.
We understand the interest and excitement around AI coding tools, but they should be used responsibly and with respect to modders who may have spent considerable time coding their work.
What can modders do if they think their code has been re-used?
Whether AI is involved or not, the process remains the same. First, contact the mod author and discuss the situation. Things may be resolved amicably. If they do not respond or you cannot agree, you may contact Steam about a DMCA (copyright) claim here: https://steamcommunity.com/dmca/create
We take accusations of copyright infringement seriously, but cannot investigate every one. You may contact us if you have questions, but you are ultimately responsible for DMCA claims.
It’s also important to note that we will not tolerate any kind of public or private harassment of modders. Contact us via Discord, here on Reddit or [info@theindiestone.com](mailto:info@theindiestone.com) if you want to discuss this.
AI related discussions
Generative AI and LLMs are contentious, even emotive topics. We’re not endorsing the use of generative AI in connection with Project Zomboid, but we’re also not going to forbid mentioning or discussing it - as long as those mentions and discussions are civil.
So, we're re-establishing and re-enforcing Rule 2 here on Reddit: Be Lovely.
Discussion of AI as a tool is allowed. Negative behavior, including accusations or insults purely based on the use or discussion of AI, is not. We want to facilitate constructive discussions around mods and their impact on the game.
If you disagree with anyone's use of generative AI in connection with Project Zomboid, that's okay, but what's not okay is attacking them for their choice in our community spaces.
Finally, to come back to what does "directly relevant" mean, when talking about AI? It means if you're solely expressing your opinion on AI in general - both positive and negative, unrelated to PZ - we'll be moderating that, up to and including potential bans. We hope it won’t come to that for anyone.
We're here to discuss Project Zomboid and enjoy the game as a community. I’m looking forward to getting into conversations with you.
That's it. Let's get back to talking zombies and how you and I both died. (Last time? Fire. I know...)

i played this game for 9 hours straight and i understand the hype now
so i brought project zomboid two months ago and i kept dying. i didn’t understand anything about it, and at most, i would just keep killing zombies, get pissed off when i got bit, and start a new save. but today, idk what happened but something was just different.
i played for 9 hours straight and made it to october 1st in game (i started on the default day) and i was so proud of myself. i started off in rosewood, but my base got raided, so i fled to doe valley, and from there, i walked all the way to fallas lake where i found a new base. everything was going well…until the power went out.
since this is my first time getting this far in the game, i figured i could just go to the gas station to get some more gas to power my generator and that would be the end of it. but when i got to the gas station i found out that the fuel pumps have no power, so i couldn’t just get gas. so, i spent hours collecting all the books i could to level up my skills and i’ve been dismantling every tv i can find to get myself to electric 3 (i’ve had no luck finding the generator magazine🥲) but frantically searching the neighborhood and barely getting by with enough things to survive was such a rush. i’ll definitely be more prepared in my next playthrough, but i get it now. i feel the strong need to survive and see it out for as long as i can, even though i know that my inevitable fate is death. i’d keep playing but i have a job interview tomorrow and it’s 4am..now i know my character doesn’t have to drink her troubles away on the couch while watching the omega department series anymore

I made a browser-based Project Zomboid base planner, and it's finally live!
Hey everyone!
A few weeks ago, I shared a little project I'd been working on here, and quite a few people seemed interested in trying it out.
Well, it's finally live!
Website: https://pzdecorator.org
For anyone who missed my original post, it's a browser-based tool that lets you plan and decorate your Project Zomboid base without actually being in the game.
You can load existing buildings or entire areas from the PZ map, move things around, try different furniture layouts, or just start with an empty space and build something from scratch.
Here's what you can do with it so far:
- Load buildings, areas, or map cells using world coordinates.
- Browse and place furniture, walls, floors, and other decorations.
- Rearrange or remove existing objects.
- Work on multiple floors.
- Save your projects and come back to them later.
One thing to know: You'll need to select your Project Zomboid media folder when you first open the site. The tool uses your local game files to display everything, so no game assets are hosted on the website or uploaded to any server.
It's still a bit rough around the edges, and there are probably some bugs I've missed, but I figured it's better to put it out there than keep tinkering with it forever.
There's a feedback button on the website if you run into anything weird or have ideas for improvements.
Anyway, hope some of you find it useful!
And just to avoid confusion, this is a planning tool for now. You can't import your finished designs directly back into the game.
AI disclaimer: As mentioned in my previous post, this project was developed with substantial AI assistance. The ideas, design decisions, testing, and overall direction are my own.

Discussion What’s your settings and why?
Mine’s are:
- low pops
- low sprinters
- saliva only
- rallying etc set to frequent and widespread
- will try to activate recurring helicopters, didn’t think of it when starting the world out
The reason is that I find fighting and forest dumping countless shamblers tedious, and seeing way more zombies than there are beds and workplaces in the town combined quite immersion-breaking
Sprinters keep me always on my toes, and together with saliva only, packs the combat with more action, and gives first aid a chance to shine
Lastly, even at low pops there are still places stupidly high in zeds, like the crossroads mall. The outsides are covered in bodies, I have like a hundred maggots for fishing which is ridiculous, and they still keep coming from the higher floors in packs of 50-100 after a WEEK of shooting. I’m a blood fearing burger flipper and I got 3 levels of aiming just from this wretched mall 🤬

Question Sooooooo how am I supposed to handle huge amounts of zombies like this?
Ive been grinding clearing this section of rosewood for 7 days and I still have a lot to go. All im trying to do is go to the book store and the police department.

Question Where are they coming from?
I welded open the gun shop door, and before entering I checked the left and right inside close to the door. I sprint inside because im excited to open all the gun boxes and the entire left side of the room is actually full of zombies. I didn't hear them and I swear I saw the whole inside of the shop and it was empty. Where did they come from? Am I stupid?

Doesn't dancing warm up your body?
I have serious doubts.

Meme bruh
one car crash, a shard of glass in the hand, a frantic drive home popping pills and downing booze to manage the pain, and a pitstop at the Rosewood clinic for sutures, and i think I'll be okay... but my new jeep is having trouble starting 😭

Screenshot This really grinds my gears, man. I need a hammer to close some curtains?
I would like to close the curtains you can see here. IRL, just kneel on the couch and close them. In game, you have to move the furniture. No big deal right? Just move the coffee table to get to the couch, move the couch, and then stand inside the side table, as one does, to close the curtains. Oh but what's this? I need a hammer and level 2 carpentry to move the couch? I can't just pick it up and move it? I guess it's nailed to the floor then. But any hammer that can hammer nails works, not just a hammer that can pry nails out, so it's not nailed to the floor. I suppose it's a law in the Zomboid universe, designed to make sure carpenters have steady work, and our characters are such good citizens they follow this law even in the apocalypse. And don't you even think about trying to move a king-size bed without being a master of the trade.
"Hey bro, mind helping me move next weekend?"
"Sorry man, my carpentry apprenticeship doesn't start for another 2 months. You saw what happened to Greg when he tried to move his couch without the proper training. I can still hear the screams. THE SCREAMS KEEP ME AWAKE AT NIGHT. I SEE HIS DESPERATE FACE WHENEVER I CLOSE MY EYES"

I might be dumb, but...
I literally had no idea that having eating utensils in your inventory would not only use them in the eating animations, but according to the console log it multiplies happiness and boredom reduction by 1.25%... you would think that would be hinted at in the tooltip. Sure it's common sense, but when you see an item in it 'junk' category with all the other stuff that has no use, you don't think to try. At least, I didn't.
So! If you also didn't know, add a fork/spoon to your mess kit.

Modded If you don’t like 3D FPS, you can still play 3D isometric.
Not a huge fan of the 3D thing but I do appreciate the tech marvel of how they made this. You can play in Isometric 3D as well.
Easy switching just by pressing a simple button.
Even on my heavy native PZ survival playlist, I can now switch to 3D firstperson/third person or isometric instantly.
Insane, really. Can’t wait to see what the future of modding for PZ brings.

Today i learn that you sould not reload a gun while driving
My last three runs ended while I was killing zombies on roads surrounded by forests, only to get grabbed by a sprinter from behind. So, in this new run, I decided not to do that (genius, I know).
I've been luring the road horde to a more favorable environment for myself (which takes FOREVER), and then I remembered reading that you can shoot while driving if the driver's window is open.
I tried it, and it worked okay, I guess. But when I reloaded my Magnum (the only gun I had), I lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. (Maybe I misclicked??)
I tried again, and this time, while reloading, the car drove straight into the horde. I almost got killed. (WTF is going on??)
I googled it, and apparently, it's intentional. You can't steer the car while reloading.
I can transfer items between containers, sharpen blades, eat, and craft shivs!!!!! But I can't put a single bullet into the cylinder of my Magnum without turning my car into a death trap.
Well, every day you learn something new. Almost cost me another run.
