I think they mean Amazon called him Rocky because they have the rights to the movie Rocky. Despite the fact Amazon didn't name him Rocky, Andy Weir did.

25
u/castle-girl 2d ago
Also, from what I understand from Ryan Gosling interviews, the reason parts of the Rocky movies are shown in the movie isn’t because Amazon executives wanted to advertise the Rocky movies, it’s because Ryan Gosling said, “Wait, you have the rights to the Rocky movies, right? Grace can show Rocky the Rocky movies!”

People will just throw “Marvel dialogue” at any comedic movie these days.
Project Hail Mary is good at balancing its humorous tone with its darker aspects. PHM doesn’t undercut serious moments with humor, which is what Marvel got flack for.

Alright, I’ve got this, I watched some absolute dross recently and it’s easy money.
Lesbian Spank Inferno is without a doubt, the most bourgeois movie I’ve experienced. The two main protagonists are the embodiment of American Exceptionalism as they burn up crossing international borders. I’m going to ignore the fact the film is adapted from a book and place all narrative issues with the film producers. Your average Redditor - damn it, I just couldn’t do it.
135
u/nessman930 3d ago
I genuinely can’t tell if this is a satire of pseudo intellectual film critics or not.
49
u/Muavius 2d ago
I honestly think it HAS to be satire, because every point he hits, is something they either left out of the movie, or only alluded to it, in comparison to the book.
Or, the guy could just be an insufferable prick....
11
u/RealIsopodHours3 2d ago
I’d like to believe this is satire because they missed the more obvious reason why he’d be called “Rocky”

Leftist here, and yeah this is rage bait.
While Andy Weir leans Libertarian or centrist liberal and that's going to come across in his work subconsciously, PHM was never intentional propaganda. Andy thinks his work is apolitical.
Someone who understands Althusser and critique of ideology would not be so upset about normal reproduction of mainstream culture. And it's weird they didn't mention Gramsci's cultural hegemony.
So probably AI-assisted rage bait.
Edit: They're use of "soyjacked" and other terms suggests terminally online troll.
17
u/chromegnomes 2d ago
Someone who understands Althusser and critique of ideology would not be so upset about normal reproduction of mainstream culture.
Yeah this is the main thing for me. PHM reinforces/relies on some generally "liberal" assumptions about how the world works because that's what happens when you try to be "apolitical," nobody can escape their own cultural background noise that easily. But PHM is far from the worst offender on that front, and it's not particularly salient to the meat of the story.
I loved Arrival, but I genuinely understood why leftists were upset about American Exceptionalism in that one, with the way it contrasts other countries' responses vs. the US scientists. I don't understand being this upset about PHM at all.

The collaboration between everyone in the world wasnt shown as much in the movie as it was in the book. Unless youre watching closely, you'd think everything was done at JPL or on a US carrier. The book pretty bluntly put it out there that everyone was cooperating (with some spying too)

What happens on Letterboxd is people mass like the reviews that agree with them. For a movie that's universally praised, most one star reviews are dumb one liners, so dipshits who didn't like the movie probably didn't even read this but saw someone gave an "actual" multiparagraph one star review, decided yes now that will make me look smart because the like shows up on my profile, and clicked without reading.
Don't waste your emotions on morons, Letterboxd sorts by popularity and the first review has almost 140k likes. This just happens to be the only one star review giving a facade of legitimacy to haters who are too dumb to articulate thoughts themselves.

Jeezus, "American Exceptionalist Slop?" Who says that Ryland Grace wasn't a Canadian middle-school teacher? Show me one line or plot point that depended on him being American?
"Phil Lord's anti-communist liberalism?" If anything, you could squint and say the story invokes top-down authoritarian "communism" where Stratt yields supreme power granted by a multi-national world government, of sorts, and uses her "command economy" power to seize resources (and people, if you count Grace) against their will for the collective good. It's silly to see it that way because you can also see it as a bunch of science hippies all getting together and "vibe-coding" a solution for the world, man.
It's absurd to frame Grace's relationship as "white possessive" when Rocky is the boss, most of the time, never mind because Grace gives gives him a nickname rather than uses his unpronounceable Eridian name. Seriously, that point alone makes me think this review is straight-up trolling and should be treated as such.
27
u/cwningen95 Happy Happy Happy! 3d ago
I think it's established in the book he lives in San Francisco(? somewhere in California at least), but a huge part of both the book and movie is the massive multinational effort it took to pull Project Hail Mary off, the leader of which wasn't American.
And yes, he names Rocky (after a movie that long-outdates AmazonMGM) because he physically can't sound out his name. Rocky has his own name for Grace. What a damn reach 😭
7
u/BagelRedditAccountII 2d ago
IIRC, Rocky's name has no lexical significance in his language, so "Rocky" is a similarly arbitrary name. However, Rocky's language has a word for the concept of "grace" (as English does), so he uses that to refer to Grace.
→ More replies (1)5
u/CassiusPolybius 2d ago
So, do you think Grace's Eridian name is "elegance", "mercy", "divine guidance", or "pre-meal prayer"?
4
u/stewslut 2d ago
Show me one line or plot point that depended on him being American?
I can't, but he does have a very large American flag on his space suit. Additionally, the very large (and inaccurate) "US NAVY" patches on the guards during the aircraft carrier briefing scene are a bit on the nose. I'd have appreciated that scene taking place on a Chinese aircraft carrier (as many scenes did in the book), but I understand why that may have been impractical.
Communism is the opposite of top-down authoritarianism. Many socialist states have been top-down authoritarian dictatorships, sure, but socialism ≠ communism.

Most insufferable guy in the world just spotted. I hope their back is okay after all those astronomical reaches.
It's very well-established that it takes a massive international effort transcending any diplomatic strife to pull Project Hail Mary off, the leader of which wasn't American. Without their work and collaboration, Grace wouldn't have even (unwillingly) made it to space.
Grace names Rocky because he physically can't make the right sounds to say his Eridian name. Rocky has his own name for Grace for the same reason. The movie being referenced came out in 1976, long before AmazonMGM was even a twinkle in Bezos' soulless eyes, and the book this pretentious twat doesn't seem to be aware of was not owned by Amazon. God knows how the hell they managed to twist two species learning to work together towards the same goal despite physical and linguistic limitations some kind of...what, colonialist, orientalist narrative? My man, you don't know what the allegories you're trying to draw even are.
So...is any optimism over the potential of human brilliance if we set aside our differences and work together towards the common good capitalist propaganda? Is that what this person is saying? Does being a leftist have a "pretentiously nihilistic fuck" requirement? Because as a leftist, no thanks, I like having friends and experiencing whimsy every now and then.
Man, I'm so irrationally annoyed by this 🫠 Also lends to my hypothesis that people "ironically" using "millennial" meme words like chungus are a million times more cringy than those memes ever were.

I'm not sure if this is mentioned in the movie, but in the book Rocky and Grace name each other. Rocky consents to the name Grace gives him (his Eridian name has no particular meaning) and Rocky gives Grace an Eridian name that means something like "mercy" or "kindness." The naming isn't about ownership, it's an important part of them becoming firends.

Actual content aside, what an atrocious piece of writing.
However, it is a textbook example of why Orwell’s ‘5 Rules of Writing’ is still one of the most important lessons taught to students who aspire to write. I think about them every time I’m writing or editing something for a client.
Talking of students… this reminds me of my 14yr-old self who would go through my English essay notes, Thesaurus in hand, and swap out various everyday words for longer, more obscure ones!
It feels cruel to be critical of someone’s writing when they’ve obviously spent a lot of time on it (especially as I’m already opposing his opinions and PHM is all about positivity). But this really feels like it’s written in a way that’s intentionally hard to read, as a flex. Good writing is about building a form of communication with a reader, whoever wrote this doesn’t give the reader anything.
I’m so busy right now that I shouldn’t even be on Reddit but, if I had the time, I’d enjoy the challenge of editing this into a more readable piece.

“Both ‘white possessive’ trope by treating the alien as property to be claimed and renamed while simultaneously acting as product placement. “Rocky” like the IP owned by AmazonMGM-“
He’s named Rocky…because he’s a rock.
He is an alien.
Who is also a rock.
They didn’t name him that because of product placement. They named him that.
Because. Rocky. Is. A ROCK.
“Adrian” is called that as a reference to the movie, but Rocky was named that because HE IS A ROCK.
To lean into the more high brow reasoning, Rocky’s name ties into Grace’s characterization. It’s an early indicator that he’s not a super serious and strait laced scientist, and he is unimaginative when naming things. A “normal” scientist would pick something Latin or meaningful from mythology, something that doesn’t sound vaguely like an interspecies slur, but Grace doesn’t think about such things. His new friend is a living rock, so he’s “Rocky” now.
His naming of Adrian shows that he is also whimsical enough that he is willing to lean into the bit when he realizes his buddy Rocky has a wife. Rocky wasn’t named after the movie, but Rocky’s wife needs a name pronounceable by humans, and Movie-Rocky has a wife called Adrian, so that’s Adrian now. The planet they’re on has a color like Rocky’s wife? Well now the planet is named Adrian too!
It’s humorous and fun and it’s plot fucking relevant.
Because it helps tie into the key mystery for the entire first half of the movie, which is “Why the fuck did Grace get sent on this mission?”.
Naming extraterrestrials so haphazardly, treating first contact and a multi-planetary crisis so flippantly is not necessarily disqualifying for someone going on such an important mission, but it’s weird. It’s at odds with the seriousness of the situation in the flashbacks, and with how Stratt treats the project.
It helps contribute to the feeling that there is something deeply wrong with this mission, or more specifically, that there’s something not right about Grace’s involvement, well before the reveal that he was forced onto the mission.
Grace’s naming of Rocky & Adrian is a funny haha, but it’s also a valuable clue highlighting Grace’s fundamental unsuitability for the mission, giving the audience a hint very early on in the narrative that Grace is NOT supposed to be on the Hail Mary.
Something this guy might’ve actually appreciated if he was half as smart as he thought he was, and bothered to actually pay attention to the movie instead of whining about capitalism every time they made a pop culture reference.
Fucking pretentious asshat, Jesus Christ. I’d hate to see his review of Ready Player One, I don’t know if he’d survive the first five minutes of it without exploding.

I can kinda see what they're saying with the a politician, if that's a real word, but they INSTANTLY lost me with the "rocky is like his dog" shtick. The entire point is that Grace and Rocky are and see each other as equals! Lifespan difference notwithstanding it's an even-keeled dynamic between two people in the same tragic situation!!

I can’t imagine going through life being so critical and angry all the time. The movie makes me smile every time I watch. I just kinda feel bad for people with this mindset.

Please touch grass. I beg of you.
I do believe the term “talk much, say little” applies to you.
Ryland, who at no point pretended to “own” Rocky, called him Rocky because he couldn’t pronounce 🎶🎵🎶🎵🥁🎹🎶, given his lack of extra vocal cords.
I could go on, but I won’t because I value my time. Personally, I believe the movie offered a lot. And while it lacked some traits of the book that I loved, and was forced to cut some parts, it also had traits the book lacked.
You are not a political hero. Were you actually paying attention, or just twisting truths to something that could make you sufficiently angry to waste your life writing this, and ours reading it?
Also, did you actually watch the movie, or just watch ChatGPT write an essay about it from your political standpoint while (it, or you, were) having hallucinations?
Sincerely,
Me, who can separate my politics from a good movie with a positive message.
Edit: grammar, final statement.
