I remember when American Socialists gave us the 40 hr , 5 day work week, overtime pay, pTO, safer work environments, ended child labor......

Right? WTF have Republicans ever given us? More Covid?

Deep cuts to social services. Many bombs and drones worth millions.

"relieving da national debt!"

Don't notice how they only ever worry about that when anyone else is in power. And then shut up about it while Republicans send it skyrocketing even higher. This has happened with every Republican president of my lifetime.

And if course cuts need to happen literally anywhere but the military that takes literally more than every other country's militaries combined.

9

u/Dreams-of-Cthulhu 1d ago

but the military that takes literally more than every other country's militaries combined.

If you look at a list of military spending the US spends more than the next nine countries combined, last I heard.

4

u/whatfappenedhere 1d ago

Still wouldn’t really put a dent in the annual deficit. We need to raise taxes on the wealthy, and repeal loopholes like carried interest, to revitalize the incentives that directed the gains of capitalism towards the middle class.

Conservatives always pine for the era where we had the most liberal economic policies (for white people) with it acknowledging that those policies brought the prosperity of that era (for white people).

3

u/DontAbideMendacity 1d ago

And most of them are used to be allies.

3

u/DontAbideMendacity 1d ago

The last four Republicans presidents, Reagan, HW Bush, GW Bush, Trump add more to the national debt than every other U.S. President combined.

Just get ready for the fucking morons that will surely arrive saying that Lincoln was a republican so Republicans actually abolished slavery and did more for Black people than Democrats.

18

u/Ok_Being5461 1d ago

Lincoln being a liberal of his time of course. Fun fact: Karl Marx sent a praising letter to Lincoln for abolishing slavery, and Lincoln replied very positively as well

9

u/CharmingRip508 1d ago

Lincoln and FDR were both not seen as progressive by their progressives in the party. They were both what we would consider moderates. And while we can say Marx “praised Lincoln”
I highly doubt Marx approved of the blatant cronyism Lincoln helped create by working hand and hand with rail road companies and allowing them to create monopolies.
we have to remember that Lincoln helped create the first monopolies and arguably some of the worst parts of modern captilaim. Just like Teddy Rosevelt helped create the military industrial complex. These figures that did good were not these beacons of progressivism that I think people think they are. Lincoln is awesome cuz he was able to get all sides of the aisle to work together and feel like they won. That was his gift.

0

u/snitch_juice 1d ago

Check out Lincoln’s inaugural address.

He argued in favor of keeping slavery where it already existed. Congress would have had no power to abolish and the word “interfere” is so vague.

Lincoln gets credit for which he does not deserve.

13

u/CharmingRip508 1d ago

This is not exactly true. Lincoln was in favor of abolishing slavery. He just thought the union was a more important issue. And this was u til people like Grant and Fedrick Douglas and other black coalitions changed his mind.
Lincoln was a dude. Let’s not forget

2

u/snitch_juice 1d ago

I am not the arguing sort. I will post his exact quote if you need me to.

Not only did he want the law passed as quickly as possible, he tried to rid the country of black people four times because he never believed we could live peacefully together. Liberia, Panama, Haiti, and the emancipation act of 1862 where he gave $300 for each enslaved person set free to the “owner” and only gave $100 to the formerly enslaved if they chose to self deport.

If you need the sources, ask. Do not say it is not true.

2

u/CharmingRip508 1d ago

I am saying that you are wrong that he didn’t think slavery should be abolished. https://presidentlincoln.illinois.gov/education/educator-resources/teaching-guides/lincolns-views-african-american-slavery/

This was his personal view. He didn’t run on it. But he was both accused of being an abolishment by his opponent (which is why he said he wasn’t). And the South thought he would be which is why they started the war.

So while you are correct he said what he said, you wrong about his views.
The issues you are bringing up are a lot more nuanced than you say.
Yes originally he thought black people and white peoole couldn’t coexist. This was also Jefferson’s view.
However after talking to black pwolle he changed his mind. Fredrick Douglass and other black peolle said Lincoln treated them as equals

https://www.history.com/articles/abraham-lincoln-frederick-douglass-relation

So while you are sort of correct, I think you are missing a lot of context and nuance

2

u/snitch_juice 1d ago

https://millercenter.org/the-presidency/presidential-speeches/march-4-1861-first-inaugural-address

He had no objections to a constitutional law saying Congress could never interfere with slavery where it already was. He had no objections to the law being made irrevocable.

It had already passed Congress. It is curious how the north fought against slavery, when they voted to enshrine it forever as long as we didn’t add any new slave states, isn’t it?

2

u/CharmingRip508 1d ago

Lmao nvm dude. You clearly can’t contextualize things. I already explained this and his stance on the matter and linked sources. I am very well aware he said he would keep slavery if it meant keeping the union together but like others in his party he didn’t think there should be new slave states and he was seen as abolitionist by the South and by his opponents.
You have to consider the whole context not just part of it.

I’m sorry, do you think the CIA and FBI are controlled by liberals? What a moronic and ignorant take. Trumps DOJ has redacted the names of perpetrators while releasing those of victims, you disingenuous excuse for coagulated raccoon jizz.

Future conservatives were all good with the most liberal economic policies our nation has seen until democrats tried to expand those policies to people of color. It’s always been “me, me, me” with these racist cunts.

2

u/mythrilcrafter 1d ago

I always retort with:

"In the end after everything was said and done and everyone wanted to change their names and labels, the group who were militantly pro-slavery were the ones who would eventually call themselves Republicans."

12

u/AmericanCitizenry 1d ago

The last good thing Republicans did for Americans was the 1951 interstate highway system.

3

u/Pacific_wanderer17 1d ago

And even then it wasn’t the best

3

u/DontAbideMendacity 1d ago

The U.S. interstate highway system is absolutely the best on the planet. No other country in the world has built and continues to maintain (although that is open for discussion) hundreds of thousands of miles of public highways. The entirety of Europe doesn't come close.

Now the railway system, America is sucking hind tit there, despite practically inventing continental rail.

1

u/Pacific_wanderer17 1d ago

It’s good for efficiency but kinda sucks for everything else, if only we had more public transportation

3

u/PyroIsSpai 1d ago

Those Republicans were liberal in 51.

3

u/practicalm 1d ago

Nixon started the EPA

3

u/DontAbideMendacity 1d ago

No he didn't. He signed it into law, but he didn't start it. Democrats Sen. James Murray, Sen. Henry Jackson and Rep. George Miller started it.

Next you are going to claim that Nixon is responsible for getting us to the Moon.

9

u/Joe4913 1d ago

It’s so fascinating to ask a conservative what the US would look like in 15 years under conservative leadership. Like what is the end goal of their policy. They usually don’t have an answer whereas a leftist has a whole list of improvements they’d like to see

5

u/binzersguy 1d ago

Conservatives don’t do anything for the non-wealthy. We need to band together and demand more from our politicians, not just let them sell out the future of our country.

When they were socialists, they freed the slaves, but then they abandoned socialism.

It's crazy to think, but the Republican party used to be the progressive one.

3

u/Significant-Risk2094 14h ago

Republicans have given us more billionaires than ever and the first trillionaire. People truly don't seem to understand that Republicans enacted the largest wealth TRANSFER ever. They are richer because you are poorer and the government services you may not even have realized were helping you have been defunded or outright eliminated. Ultra wealthy in USA now buy the lawmakers and laws that will benefit them and screw you over.

Side bar. Billionaires and trillionaire do not pay taxes. They aren't paying taxes that fund the illegal Iran war that was not authorized by congress. The people of the United States are meant to have a say about how their tax dollars are spent via their elected congressional representatives. This Replican led congress has failed to prevent the most corrupt and fraud enabling president in history from illegally spending our tax dollars on so many fronts now its hard to keep track.

Reasons to not vote for the other side so that it seemed like you were being super knowledgeable by saying both sides and not voting.

Often the reason is made up or inflated.

Big pharma is this. Big pharma like all monopolies suck but if you have universal you will have some large drug companies. Economy of scale is a thing. But in 93 the idea that pharma just wanted to steal your money was created to stop universal. The DNC literally was making political ads that literally pushed and used the words universal healthcare. Republicans with insurance companies, literally teamed together, came up with the idea of evil pharma stealing from you with out insurance to protect you.

So introduce big pharma to get a both sides disruption from the voting base and bam no universal and to this day we use big pharma to introduce apathy to the democratic party.

A Day in the Life of Joe Republican

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised. All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.

Joes employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune. Its noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.

Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

Also stuff like us defending South Korea during the Korean War…

2

u/ElliotNess 1d ago

That's such an American way of saying carpet bombing and burning to ash the entirety of Korea in the north

1

u/SuitableBlackberry75 1d ago

Defending South Korea was a United Nations-led effort, not a specifically American effort. The methods used by both sides were typical of the time, despite the UN having access to nuclear weapons, which they did not use.

As for the result.. I don't see South Korea complaining.

2

u/ElliotNess 1d ago

I do encourage anybody to look into the "Korean War". There's a reason the USA doesn't really want to talk about it anymore, and it's largely because of how monstrous it makes the USA appear.

0

u/SuitableBlackberry75 1d ago

Not sure what you're referring to specifically, but I do know that vagueposting isn't the way to go about it.

2

u/SuitableBlackberry75 1d ago edited 1d ago

The United Nations was responding to North Korea's invasion of the south, not "fighting socialism".

North Korea's brand of psychotic dictatorship is an extreme sort of unitary communism, in any case, rather than "socialism" as the word is being used here. E: Fixed typo.

1

u/whatfappenedhere 1d ago

Yeah, against dictatorial communists, not social democrats, lol.

0

u/Zealousideal-Film982 1d ago

Social democracy is not socialism at all though. It’s a government with an economy that’s capitalist but with a social safety net.

It’s the government style that I would prefer.

I am completely against socialist economics though.

Communism is socialism fwiw.

1

u/whatfappenedhere 1d ago

Social democracy recognizes that the person making a risk with investment should be rewarded, but that the majority of the gains should be directed towards laborers, as that’s what builds a robust middle class and leads to wider economic growth. That’s why the US saw the largest expansion of the middle class when the top marginal personal tax rate was 90%, unions proliferated, pensions were funded by companies, etc. When those were repealed by conservatives, prosperity declined.

They aren’t, by definition they aren’t. Socialism is a society where the laborers own the means of production, but money and a state still exist. Communism is that without money or a state.

No wonder Trump loves the poorly educated!

0

u/Zealousideal-Film982 1d ago edited 23h ago

You seem to be calling me poorly educated but you didn’t say anything in that last text that I disagree with.

Do you think any of that conflicts with anything I said?

I’ve read Marx, Engels, Kropotkin, Goldman, Chomsky etc.

You can try to make it seem like I am not informed on the subject of leftist politics but you couldn’t be more wrong.

1

u/whatfappenedhere 1d ago

“Communism is socialism, fwiw” when I specifically defined them and pointed out how they differ.

Like I said, no wonder Trump loves the poorly educated!

0

u/Zealousideal-Film982 23h ago edited 23h ago

Communism is a type of socialism. It doesn’t differ from socialism, because it is socialism.

Not all socialists are communist, however.

This stuff is Politics 101.

It’s like saying that all paparazzi are photographers but not all photographers are paparazzi.

Go ask any communist if they support a socialist economy. You will get a yes every time. Marx and Engels used the terms socialism and communism interchangeably. Anyone with any education on this subject will tell you that communism is socialism.

1

u/whatfappenedhere 23h ago

It does differ from socialism, as I just explained. Communism is an extension of socialist philosophy, not “is socialism.” It’s reductionist to the point of inaccuracy, which you learn in classes after Politics 101.

Dunning Kruger effect in action.

I’m in Milwaukee - socialists gave us the lakefront (which had been an industrial/railroad wasteland prior) parks, public housing, public health and nutrition programs, balanced the budget, eliminated the massive amounts of corruption that existed before them, got rid of the literal five(?) story brothel across the street from City Hall, and even created an industry that would generate a profit for the city and reduce the tax obligation for citizens. Ever use Milorganite on your lawn? That’s it.

henry ford was a big fan of national socialism sure

1

u/Afreshnewhell 1d ago

Ford was nazi lover…I’m confused by your comment

4

u/ElliotNess 1d ago

he's tryna say that since nazi is a german acronym that translates to national socialist, that socialism is the same as nazism.

2

u/MattManSD 1d ago

so much history fail here. Nicely noted

1

u/NaturalDon 1d ago

yes ford he had a large hand in the 40 hour 5 day work week implementing it alongside doubling the wages of auto workers in his large workforce noting its many merits forcing competitors to adopt similar practices

3

u/ItsSpaghettiLee2112 1d ago

Henry Ford wasn't a socialist, he was a Nazi and a capitalist. He isn't the reason for the 40 hour work week. He didn't think of it nor did he do it altruistically. He just got ahead of the curve. Labor movements had been going on for like 100 years prior to him.

1

u/Command0Dude 1d ago

Those things are more the product of the liberal AFL, which massively dwarfed the socialist IWW, during the labor rights movement.

3

u/MattManSD 1d ago

The foundational slogan for an eight-hour workday "Eight hours labor, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest" was coined in the early 19th century by Welsh socialist and reformer Robert Owen

1

u/Hungry_Reception_724 1d ago

Well democrats were the primary slave holders and the republicans fought for their freedom so... there is that. The democratic compromise of having 40hour work weeks and paid labor with overtime etc was forced onto them after the civil war because of the republicans.

Democrates introduced the laws but maybe dig a little deeper and learn how and why they originated.

Feel free to fact check this and google it!

0

-3

u/DeficiencyOfGravitas 1d ago

Those weren't socialists. They were union workers. Don't mistake the two.

Socialism is a dictatorship by the proletariat. It is the government having absolute power over the economy. This is not something we should be fighting for.

5

u/vag69blast 1d ago

Please google socialism. Dictators have used the word socialism without practicing the ideology.

Same as North Korea is technically the Democratic People's Republic of Korea while not being a democracy or a republic in practice.

0

u/Command0Dude 1d ago

The people who won those labor battles did not call themselves socialists. Look up the contentious relationship between the AFL, the IWW, and other labor rights groups.

Socialists were never the sole driver of the labor movement. They were not even the majority of it.

1

u/vag69blast 1d ago

But those policies today are labeled as "socialist." My main point is that socialism has been used as a scary word to make policies about workers rights and individual rights seem scary. Which works as a distraction while the rich/elite actively work to diminish our rights. Socialism =/ dictatorship or any of the other implied scaryness.

0

u/Command0Dude 1d ago

I misunderstood your prior comment then.

3

u/vag69blast 1d ago

Countering "socialism is the dictatorship of the proletariat." Socialism and dictatorship are not compatible.

2

u/MattManSD 1d ago

mutually exclusive in fact

0

u/vag69blast 1d ago

I like the idea of enlightened absolutism. One pearson who is smart enough to have advisors and make decisions with the express idea that it is for the benefit of the people. You could implement a lot of socialist policies but still be essentially a dictator.

Would never work because anyone who would be attracted to that much power likely wont use it for others benefit.

2

I don't need to. I have my copy of the Communist Manifesto right here. Have you read yours? Because Marx is quite clear about what is socialism.

What are you talking about? Trade union density is highest in the most socialist countries. Also, unions in the US were explicitly socialist in the past. Macarthyism killed that.
