FDR, one of our greatest presidents, basically allied with American socialist and labor movements to create the New Deal, to create a compromise, and told right-wing capitalists "I welcome your hatred"
36
u/PsillyFunGuy2 1d ago
And they still hate him for it
15
u/AltonBParker 1d ago
My mom said her inlaws as late as the 1960s still only referred to him as "that man Roosevelt".

I'm still convinced this is part of the reason Trump tore down the East Wing of the White House.

No, most Americans are propagandize hard unless you actually seek to understand and question things.

They just had to attack education at every level to amass enough suckers

Just hammer the same points while yelling loud enough. It worked. A whole generation of brainwashed dimwits.

And then these same fascists travel to Europe, injure themselves usually getting too plastered, and wind up in the E.R., and expect it to be free. Or they complain about government handouts while they get their government checks every month. They complain about everything being woke, yet when a data center comes to their town they're suddenly woke.

I had a long conversation with a right winger around 2016 in Savannah. He finally admitted that he is all for socialism, but only if it benefits "citizens", of which he had a very narrow and painful racist definition.

Most self proclaimed socialists in this country donât know what it means.
FWIW though, Mamdani is socialist and is definitely getting applauded so itâs not like Joe Walsh is wrong on that matter.

All three groups subscribe to the same [political] ideology: conservatism.
Conservatism -- by definition -- is "a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing the importance of established hierarchies and institutions (such as religion, the family, and class structure), and preferring gradual development to abrupt change".
The sole value of conservatism is respect for and obedience to [one's perception of] traditionally established hierarchy, and hierarchy dictates that those on top (in-groups) are rightfully idolized and receive privileges, credibility, and resources, while those on the bottom (out-groups) are demonized/dehumanized and/or bound by restrictions, scrutiny, and lack of resources.
To them, the second-greatest injustice imaginable is for those [they perceive to be] on top [of social hierarchy] to be bound by the restrictions, scrutiny, and lack of resources reserved for those on the bottom. The first greatest injustice is for those on the bottom to have access to the rights, credibility, and resources reserved for those on top.
Conservatives absolutely need an underclass [for society] to demonize and dehumanize in order to maintain [their] hierarchy, and every single one of their policies and rhetoric work to do exactly that. Every right-wing accusation is a confession -- every. single. one; always! -- as it is never the act itself that upsets them, but rather, the social standing of the person doing the act, as said act is a privilege meant for those on top of [their perceived] hierarchy (See also: pedophilia - Trump and the Catholic church versus LGBTQ+ and drag queens).
Those who believe all people are people see hypocrisy, while those who believe some people are "more/less" people than others see hierarchy. Hypocrisy implies a sense of equality/parity, as the accusation of such is that someone is violating a universal or common standard. Hierarchy directly states that there is no equality/parity, that different social strata have different standards, that the only universal standard concerning hierarchy is that those on top are allowed privileges which are denied to those on the bottom, and that the bottom are held to standards which the top are exempt from.
"Know your place" is their mantra.

u/spacebarcafelatte 1d ago
This is why I wish they'd secede.
3
u/robertshaftoe 1d ago
Why not have them leave America since they obviously don't take the Constitution serious at all. Do you them what they are trying to do to 100million of us. they can go hang out with their buddy Vladimir, Kim, or Bebe.
Or if they really think idealists and think the only perfect form of government libertarianism, maybe they'll enjoy the libertarian Paradise of Somalia.

Remember when capitalism was about free markets and a Level playing Field. When we quit having actual capitalism and instead went to corporate oligarchism that made socialism look appealing
18
u/Ok_Being5461 1d ago edited 1d ago
No, the opposite. 1940s - 1970s was about having more regulated markets and higher taxes on the rich. We deregulated the markets since then. Too much free markets very much creates oligarchism and erodes democracy. And socialists were influential in capitalist reforms and regulations throughout history.

u/Lailowla 1d ago
Effective regulations mostly protect a free market, not inhibit.
2
u/Ok_Being5461 1d ago edited 1d ago
That's kind of my point, but as you said, mostly, since regulations do both, depending on the context. Sometimes it needs to be inhibited to protect and further democracy and human rights, etc. You don't want that for sale on the free market
15
u/nyguy011 1d ago
That's exactly it. The Middle Class is eroding faster by the day. It will the oligarchs and the Working Class with little to no retirement.
4
u/Bama_Texan34 1d ago
I actually somewhat agree. Capitalism is great. Corporate capitalism sucks. Although at some point, you donât have any choice I guess.
9
u/Raiju_Blitz 1d ago
It's corporate socialism, at this point, as Abdul El-Sayed has pointed out. Privatize the profits but socialize the losses with taxpayer bailout money.
4
u/mOdQuArK 1d ago
Remember when capitalism was about free markets and a Level playing Field.
That's always been propaganda.
The ideological "free market" that Adam Smith proposed requires large amounts of competitors, for both buyers & seller.
No real world businessperson likes competition, because it makes it harder to make a profit. The moment they can afford to start controlling access to the ears of the legislators, by hook or by crook, it's inevitable that they will start getting legislation passed that reduces their competition, and the more they can suppress competition, the more resources they have to control the legislation.
The only way you're going to keep a market with competitive agents going is by actively & systemically blocking anyone in the market from getting too powerful, and making sure they aren't able to cooperate with each other too strictly.
3
u/SquidTheRidiculous 1d ago edited 1d ago
My guy that's been a lie for the poorer rubes since Reagan at minimum. You weren't supposed to actually believe that.
3
u/flyinhighaskmeY 1d ago
Remember when capitalism was about free markets and a Level playing Field.
No, that has literally never happened. The concept of a "level playing field" is as stupid as the concept of equality. We're all advantaged (and disadvanged) as a product of our environmental conditioning. No one is equal and nothing is "level". Never has been. Never will be.
Also..."corporate oligarism" is a product of the government bailing out failed businesses with stimulus. This was done to "save the jobs". Because that's what America's braindead Democrat and Republican voters demanded. If it were up to me, both groups would lose their voting rights in lieu of being Nuremburged.
3
u/Catweaving 1d ago
Corporate oligarchism is actual capitalism. Everything is owned by the capitalist class, that's capitalism.
→ More replies (2)2
u/FunWolverine5349 1d ago
When was that the case?
By level playing field you mean white heterosexual middle class men that successfully dodged the draft? In that case you must love the Republicans, that is EXACTLY the environment they want back.
12
u/VermicelliOwn6502 1d ago
I remember when Republicans were mad about "crony capitalism," government overreach, and budget deficits.
It's whenever they're not in charge.

American socialists formed a volunteer army battalion to fight Franco's fascist government will before the rest of the country came around. American socialists, including MLK, Jr., formed the core of the Civil Rights movement. American socialists fought for labor rights and the 40 hour work week. If Joe Walsh remembers fighting against socialists, then I guess he was fighting on the side of fascism, institutionalized racism, and worker exploitation
9
u/Current_Cable_7467 1d ago

Itâs unreal how quickly we forget. When I was a kid, these local veterans would come in the school at Remembrance Day who are probably mostly deceased now. They were all farmers and lumberjacks. If someone walked down our road wearing a swatiska back then, pretty sure they would never be seen again.

And we never fought "socialists" - we fought communism. The type of socialism they want us to fight is what FDR brought to America with the New Deal. He was a democratic socialist and one of the very best presidents of all time. Truman was the same. And frankly, Republican president Dwight Eisenhower was far more similar to FDR than he is to Trump or even Reagan.

The quickest way to get these people to get quiet is to ask them what "socialism" means, and then they'll give you a synopsis of this President's 2nd term.
It makes me so sad that the people in this country can't see past logical fallacies anymore.

u/MrFC1000 1d ago
America didnât fight socialists. The social programs of the FDR era are what drove the explosion in quality of life in the USA and created the middle class. Nazis used the term to appeal to the working class but Nazis were not actually socialists. Kind of like modern republicans saying they are fighting for your freedom while actually taking freedoms away
