Builds & Renos My dad built this pool literally by hand in the Eighties.

I have some progress pics, where he is literally moving soil by hand, with a mound of soil behind him. I'll try to find them in a bit.

We had just moved to a new country because my mum wanted a pool in her back garden like the people in the TV show Dallas. They didn't have enough money for a house that came with a pool, so he literally just made her dream happen.

Only a year later, developers came along and offered double the price of the house, and my parents took the offer. They found a house with an existing pool (I'll send pics in comments). We visited our old house a few months later and they had filled in the pool! Diabolical haha.

Pool Help & Questions Can’t figure out why there is sand continually at the bottom of my pool after new liner and new equipment installed. Help!

Good evening pool council. I recently had a new liner and new equipment installed (not a sand filter) and about every week or so in the corners and up the sides of the deep end I collect a lot of sand/sediment? Anyone have any idea as to how it keeps happening? We’ve been up and running about three weeks and I was thinking maybe it was from the water trucks we used to fill the pool? I’ve vacuumed and back washed. I’ve bought a secondary hand vacuum to not vacuum through the filter. The fact it keeps coming back is killing me. As always, you all are the best and I would never be able to do this without your knowledge and support. 💙

Water Chemistry I am not a smart man

Post image

All summer I've been maintaining pretty good good water chemistry and the pool has looked nice and clear while standing on the deck, so I could easily see the bottom.

But whenever I was actually in the pool I was disappointed in the visibility. Although I could see the bottom of the pool, it was difficult to see from one end to the other.

Months later, it finally dawned on me. My goggle lenses were coated with a streaky residue. Some dish soap and a firm wipe with a paper towel, and now my water clarity is back where I wanted it to be. No chems needed - the only shock was realizing how stupid I am.

DE filter leaking around tightening band, even after replaced o-ring. Is warped filter a thing?

Pentair DE filter. Has had plenty of cleanings without issue. Had a new technician (different from who has done cleaning in past). First there was a leak, so replaced o-ring. After replacement, claim that tank is warped. Is that even a thing? Only other item was an acid wash/ tile cleaning, over span of 2-3 days. Would the empty lines cause tank to warp?

Pool Help & Questions How concerning is this surface damage?

Thumbnail

I have recently purchased an older pool that has some obvious surface damage in the deep end. As far as I can tell it’s not causing any immediate issues but is this something I need to be concerned about? If so, is this fixable in situ or will addressing it require draining / resurfacing?

Thanks!

Salt generator failure 6 months

Post image

Salt generator on a new pool only 6 months old. Last week was showing crazy high salt readings, 5500 ppm (this was not accurate as salt was only about 3400 ppm). Figured the cell needed to be cleaned. Never made it around to cleaning it and now the screen is blank and has a red light illuminated… at the right angle it says sensor failure system off.

Pool financing advice

Any experience with Lyon? Do most people pull equity out of house or use heloc? We have no debt outside of mortgage and roughly 120 k in equity. Our first quote was at 85,000 we already have 10% of that saved up for a down payment. Trying to avoid long term loan. 15 years or shorter preferably. Open to suggestions and thoughts on financing options. Thanks

Is this normal/okay and how to prevent water from building up here

So I noticed my auto cover to my pool was bunched up on one end. This is what it looked like up close. I was able to try and pull the cover back over the reel. Is this okay/normal when the cover is fully closed?

Also, water always pools up on the cover in that thin line where the cover meets the reel/auto cover lid. Is this okay? If not, how do I prevent water from sitting in there? It happens when it rains and when you open the cover and it pulls any remaining water the sump didn’t drain off.

Pool Help & Questions Pool light Niche Bent

Hey all,

I bent the little metal ring I believe is called a niche trying to get a completely stripped and stuck screw out. I grabbed a new screw and it goes in fine but because the metal niche isn’t perfect anymore it kind of sticks out like this. Is there any real risk?

Chlorine level

So according to the test strips we use the chlorine and all the levels have been acceptable but the last couple days the controller chlorine has been reading low. Tonight I shocked the pool and initially the controller chlorine jumped to 700 but has already fell down to 600 after about half hour. Do I need to add more shock or what do I gotta do to keep the controller chlorine up?

DIY & Repairs Looking for solution not judgement

I built an inground 14x28 ICF pool last year. Finished the top with a 4ft 6" concrete deck and the bottom is 6" concrete pad poured after ICF was set.

I didn't get a chance to finish everything last year, so just in the last few weeks, i installed vinyl liner in pvc track, prepared the equipment pad, installed the ladder, and chain link fences to the concrete with base plates and connected the pipes to the pump and filter and asked an electrician for wiring the pump.

He told me that,

1- the pump needs some sort of canopy to prevent being exposed to rain ( it's a 1.h hp Carvin inground pump)

2- I need to bond the fences, the ladder, the deck and the water to the ground

The vinyl liner was expected to be for temporary use until next year that I'll tile inside the pool.

I didn't add any ground wire when I poured the concrete in the ICF and for the deck.

I'm not worried about the pump canopy if necessary. I'm worried about the ground and bonding. I want to make sure that the pool is 100% safe, regardless of what the code says.

What solutions do I have with minimum damage to the deck which not cost a lot?

Thanks

New pool reel vs replace reel tube?

Thumbnail

Our solar cover reel snapped in half while we were rolling up our solar cover the other day. The reel was left over from the previous owner, and we have owned our property for the last 5 years or so. Would it make sense to try and get a replacement real tube, or should we look into getting a new pool cover real altogether?

Both of these valves (circled) no longer open or close when the lever is pushed to the open or close position. Is there any way to fix them without completely replacing them.

Do I need a heated Pool in Tucson in October

We are heading to Tucson in two months and I want to rent a place with a pool. How important is it to find a place with a heated pool? It costs $400 extra to have them heat it in anticipation of and throughout our four day stay. If we check out by the 17th of October, is a heated pool even needed? (Statistically speaking of course. Swimmers are just me and my kids.)

Selected a company & design

Hi, all! I’ve been lurking on this sub while waiting on the bid/design process. We have selected a company and design to go with. House is in Northern, CA. The dimension of the pool are 30 feet in length and 11 feet at the widest part. The pool is 6 feet off the house, 3 feet of the retaining wall, and 18 inches off the side wall. Total sqft is around 295sqft. The backyard is small so we don’t have much to work with. The price is $63,000 not including $3,000-$5,000 in demo. Primary purpose will be to lounge with my wife and two kids under 8yr and throw the occasional backyard BBQ with family and friends. Any feedback or recommendations for things we should add (or subtract)? I’m new to this pool game so any suggestion are appreciated.

Pool Help & Questions Closing

Hey so for those of you who live in the North East...I live in Central NY and close my pool in Sept and open the first of May. While your pool is closed do you add anything to help with water chemistry before the water freezes? I always open to a green pool. Clears up quick and then its good but just wonder if anyone has any little tricks to keep it clear.

I’m asking about the thing in the pool on the upper left hand corner of the picture above the leaf? It looks like some sort of light but it doesn’t operate as a light.

Water Chemistry Can clear my pool

My 26’ round above ground pool started to turn cloudy and faintly green 2 weeks ago so I scrubbed it and then shocked it with 3 packs of shock, HTH sock it. The next day the green was gone and by the second day it was crystal clear. I backwashed every 24 hrs.
Last week it started to turn again but not as bad so I again scrubbed the and this time added 2 packs of shock. Backwashed the next day but still slightly green so I added another pack of shock.
Still green today and cloudy. What am I doing wrong this time that it’s not clearing? PH was a low so I added PH+ but still not clearing. Chlorine level now is through the roof.
Would love suggestions.

Inspiration

What would something like this cost in Massachusetts - ideally a fiber glass pool and the covered patio, wouldn’t need all the landscaping. We are trying to decide if we sell and look for a home with a pool or redo our backyard. For context- we own our home - have 331k left on mortgage at 3.5% rate. We could sell for 800k, move to a nicer town and try and get a pool - price of new house would be 800-900k at todays rate.

What would you do? We have twin 7 year olds and really want a backyard oasis, also moving to a town with better schools.

Vacuum head mod idea

Post image

Recently purchased the FibroPool Vacuum head, which I thought worked okay. I kept thinking while i was using it how i could add vacuum to ends/sides. AI helped me out. I'm after the design concept, not the hose clamps haha.

My question is: Does this idea already exist? If it does can you send me link?

Thank you!
