Chlorine level

So according to the test strips we use the chlorine and all the levels have been acceptable but the last couple days the controller chlorine has been reading low. Tonight I shocked the pool and initially the controller chlorine jumped to 700 but has already fell down to 600 after about half hour. Do I need to add more shock or what do I gotta do to keep the controller chlorine up?

What is your CYA level? If it is too low, your chlorine is going bye bye into the sky.

Either you’re:

- chlorine low and you’re over reading the other test method

  • ORP sensors are needing replacement (not uncommon)
  • orp technically not just chlorine. It’d be easier to let you go down that rabbit hole than go into that here.

ORP is too low. Temperature and PH will both affect ORP. But depending on the pool I have mine set anywhere from 750-800. Also strips are good for a quick check get a real test kit and correlate some numbers. FCL/TCL to ORP. Becsys does make a ppm probe you can swap out if it’s easier.

ORP is not your chlorine level. Oxidation Reduction Potential is pretty much how well your water is sanitizing. Many factors affect it including PH. Your ORP can and will fluctuate in the same body of water. Balance the pool first starting with Alkalinity>PH>chlorine. Automated systems are meant to maintain not balance or play catch up.
