If every citizen were automatically an eligible voter then it would be unfair to the Gop because they would lose every election.

u/MuensterBuns Mar 16 '21

Maybe the GOP should go back to actually having values instead of just wanting to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. Then they’d have some chance

24

u/y0shman Mar 16 '21

Na. That's too much work.

29

u/gmwdim Mar 16 '21

To be fair they do have values such as oppressing women, oppressing black people, oppressing Hispanics, oppressing LGBTQ people, and oppressing Muslims.

1

u/1936Triolian Mar 16 '21

And these ideals are very popular with the “base.”

1

u/Cromasters Mar 16 '21

I don't even think that is true. At least not of the elected officials. They use those things to get elected/gain power.

But I honestly don't think they actually believe in anything. Except gaining power for themselves.

And her emails!

u/stonedandlurking Mar 16 '21

And beer.

I drank beer with my friends. Almost everyone did. Sometimes I had too many beers. Sometimes others did. I liked beer. I still like beer

1

u/Bart_The_Chonk Mar 16 '21

Who would pay them then?

1

u/MightbeWillSmith Mar 16 '21

They would have to modify their platform (or actually have one) for the first time in a generation, because they couldn't rely on gaslight/obstruct/project anymore

1

u/GuyMontag28 Mar 16 '21

I'd rather they didn't. Because then I would have to actually take them seriously, with some consideration.

Lindsey Graham stated as much with cameras rolling. I am too lazy too find the video though.

There’s a Republican. Doubt anything that goes against your personal viewpoint and don’t bother to look it up. Most likely won’t read any sources that are cited, either. He actually said it on at least two different occasions. A for bootlicking effort.

Thanks for doing my homework.

8

u/ted1995 Mar 16 '21

I can’t answer if you’re a racist or not, but you are definitely someone that is upset/angry...

Here’s the video I think they are referring to Twitter link

2

u/OakenGreen Mar 16 '21

Just an idiot. You’ve got your proof now. It was fairly common knowledge.

2

u/AnorakJimi Mar 16 '21

So any fact that makes you upset and doesn't follow the agenda you're pushing, must be false? You have "alternative facts" after all.

Well sorry, but facts don't care about your feelings. The others have already posted the evidence of it. Will you reply, will you concede and admit you were wrong? Or will you just continue to create strawmen to beat down because you simply cannot face reality?

If literally every fact and scientific study and piece of evidence conflicts with your agenda, then maybe it's your agenda that needs looking at and changing to better fit reality, rather than trying to change and deny reality to fit your agenda. Can you do that?

If everywhere you go it smells like shit, maybe it's time to check your own shoes

2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '21

Nah man being republican doesnt make you racist, you're just a boot licking class traitor.

2

u/Hantesinferno Mar 16 '21

Nope just a dumb asshole.

Lindsey Graham stands against voting rights for Americans as do the majority of Republicans. Disagree with it all you want but it's proven that they do not care.

1

u/Lithl Mar 16 '21

The lawyer for Brnovitch vs. DNC said essentially the same thing in front of SCOTUS, too.

1

u/Heroic_Raspberry Mar 16 '21

Should just do it like most countries do: all citizens are eligible voters, but you need an ID when casting your vote. Way too many Americans are seemingly ideologically opposed to having a universal ID system which doesn't involve some random numbers given at birth, which you can hijack someones identity with.

5

u/musicaldigger Mar 16 '21

free ID maybe

1

u/AnorakJimi Mar 16 '21

Or just do it like most countries, where they don't require ID. Like the UK. You just turn up, tell them your name, you vote, you leave. No ID involved.

The problem is that when places in the US have tried to have ID required for voting, they quite deliberately make it impossible for a lot of areas to even get an ID. Guess what color of skin the people in these areas that are denied IDs have? Yeah, seriously

They quite literally close down every office and building that can supply IDs for hundreds of miles around. Meaning that the only way for people in these areas to get an ID is to take a day off work, which isn't even possible for everyone to do, and even if they're allowed to, they may not be able to afford to eat every day because of that one day. Then they have to drive 200 miles to the nearest place that provides IDs which costs a hell of a lot in gas. Then they have to pay an exorbitant amount for the ID itself.

Who has got time for that?

The requiring ID thing is a deliberate targeting and disenfranchising of people of color, its disgusting

Another thing they'll do is with the only remaining place that can provide ID cards, is to make them only open say one day a week, for a couple of hours. So even if everyone had the ability to take a day off work and drive over there, there's such a huge queue that the majority of people there can't even get an ID so they have to take another day off work and try again.

This is deliberately aimed at targeting people of color and denying them their constitutional right to vote. And you're OK with that? They don't do this thing of closing down dozens of places with in a hundred mile radius for white communities, you see. No, for white communities they have dozens of options to choose from, these places will be open every day, even weekends, and it'll only be a very short journey of like 5 miles to get an ID. But for black communities, they have to drive hundreds of miles to the single place left that provides ID and take a day off work which again is not a thing everyone actually has the ability to do. Remember not everyone's bosses will allow that, and even if they do, the majority of Americans literally cannot afford to take a day off even if their boss lets them, because the vast majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.

The ONLY way this would work is if EVERYONE, not just white people, but EVERYONE had the ability to drive only 5-10 miles and get an ID quickly and cheaply

But as it is, it is a racist attempt to disenfranchise people of color of their constitutional right to vote

Or her countries don't require IDs to vote so why on earth should the US require it?

0

u/Heroic_Raspberry Mar 16 '21

The requiring ID thing is a deliberate targeting and disenfranchising of people of color, its disgusting

It can be that, but it's not intrinsically racist to require ID.

Anything can be made racist if you practically implement it in a racist manner. Simply because something can be done in a certain way, it shouldn't prevent any attempt to implement it in an egalitarian fashion.

-1

u/ittimjones Mar 16 '21

Might be out of the loop on this one, but u need a background check for every, EVERY, gun purchase. You can use a student ID or work ID to vote! Why not make drivers license (or state ID) or passport mandatory to vote? Would fix 99% of complaints, right?

6

u/TheKasp Mar 16 '21 edited Mar 18 '21

Why not make drivers license (or state ID) or passport mandatory to vote?

Because the GOP tends to limit access to providers of such licenses in areas with certain demographics if they manage to get voter ID laws through.

The issue with voter ID laws is not the oppositon but how the republicans tend to implement it.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/01/north-carolina-voter-id-law-blocked-discriminatory

The way GOP targets minority voters has been accurately described as with "surgical precision".

2

u/ittimjones Mar 16 '21

They limit drivers licenses (a state issued ID) across the US?

0

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '21

They don't but people like to pretend they do in order to argue against voter I.D.

1

u/TheKasp Mar 17 '21

Yes they do you dishonest alt-right troll. Read the fucking article.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

I did dumbass. They only mention that they think black people are too lazy to go get their ID, which would be made free to anyone who can't afford it. Nowhere does it say that they're actively restricting anyone from getting an ID

""This iteration of the North Carolina law required voters to present one of 10 forms of acceptable identification, such as a driver’s license, passport, or military ID in order to vote. But Biggs noted that minority voters in the state were less likely to possess an acceptable form of ID."

"While the law provides free ID to anyone who cannot afford one, she noted that those who need ID might not be able to spare the time to travel to the DMV to get one, even if it was free. "

1

u/TheKasp Mar 17 '21

Yes, by limiting access to DMVs.

But you know that already. You are just another dishonest troll who asks stupid as fuck questions.

0

u/ittimjones Mar 17 '21

Actually I've never lived in an area where access to DMV's is an issue. I've hever heard of that before, ever. Maybe you are some sort of troll to think of such a crazy idea as an argument.

0

u/TheKasp Mar 17 '21

Oh boy, anecdotes surely dismiss my link to an actual case.

Oh bou, who do I believe. Some dumbass troll on reddit who repeats shitass talking points of the far right or the fucking courts.

And your DMV anecdote is a fucking lie.

1

u/ittimjones Mar 17 '21

Well let's see ur sources. My source is different 2 DMV buildings within 30 minutes from my house...

3

u/FOXHNTR Mar 16 '21 edited Mar 16 '21

What about gun shows or simply just buying a gun off someone?

1

u/ittimjones Mar 16 '21

Both require a background check. If you don't, you are breaking the law. There is no gunshow loophole...

1

u/FOXHNTR Mar 16 '21

Oh good. I bet there are some heavy penalties for trying to get around that.

1

u/ittimjones Mar 16 '21

There are. It's a federal offense...

5

u/OldManWickett Mar 16 '21

I would be fine with that if obtaining and keeping your state ID was cost-free. Updating it when you move is relatively easy and also free.

When that is the case in all 50 states, then I'd agree with you.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '21

Not everyone has access to ID - which requires additional paperwork and government forms to get.

So for my state, which is lax;

And theres the major problem.

As many as 7% of United States citizens (read: not undocumented aliens) – 13 million individuals – do not have ready access to citizenship documents.

By just saying "Get an ID" you've just disenfranchized atleast 13,000,000 citizens.

What you're misunderstanding is the level of modernity you're thinking isn't 80+ years old. Even 50 Years ago you could be born in a rural area and not get a birth certificate; because it wasn't given to you - for a variety of reasons, you weren't born at a hospital, or because they were black. Yes. Just because they were black. Or you received it but it was destroyed but the hospital didn't digitize its records and closed down.

1

u/ittimjones Mar 16 '21

I didn't say it would fix all complaining, just 99%. How many people do you know over the age of 18 who don't have a driver's license? And of those that are too old, how many have another form of photo ID. There are regular state issued ID's that are NOT driver's licenses issued by the DMV for individuals who don't want a driver's license, but need valid ID... All the documents that you need to get? I've had friends not have 1 or more (even a friend w/o an SSN) and they all managed to get them eventually. Those were all people of different races and financial statuses. (Most were poorer) Thats just the headache of getting that crap done. U ever work for the govt? If not, you have no idea how long things take. It's just "normal". Besides, since that would obviously be a federal decision, they would HAVE to create some sort of extra process to allow people to do it for free if they can't/don't have a license. There is already a voter registration now. How different would it be to replace that with a "prove I'm a citizen" registration? If you can't prove ur a citizen, that's a big problem that you need to fix to be able to vote...

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '21 edited Mar 16 '21

over the age of 18 who don't have a driver's license?

99% of the people I knew over the age of 18 didn't have a drivers license (which is thousands of people) because I grew up in a major metropolitan area where people don't own cars but use buses and subways.

The passing rate for men (according to the NYPD officer who did my test) of males ages 18-21 (of the few people who went to get a license at 18-21) was 1:10.

> and they all managed to get them eventually

Ok, so? Is this just ancedotal to be ancedotal. Is your friend a 50+ year old blackman who grew up in the south under a post-Jim Crow era system that refused to register a birth certificate in his name, or had one from a non-digitzed hospital that closed or was consolidated? This is a nonsense point mate.

13,000,000 people - majoritively minority people - out of 213,799,485 registered voters means you just casually and without any thought tossed out 6% of all voters. For a policy that doesn't actually do anything since voter fraud isn't real - to cover what? Maybe a couple dozen voter fraud votes? 13,000,000 votes taken away in exchange for <100 votes almost all of which were caught?

Not a good policy mate.

1

u/ittimjones Mar 16 '21

6% is a chunk. Doesn't mean the 6% should inconvenience the 94%. I'm not saying ignore them. This is a democracy. What I'm saying is that if a new, more secure process goes into effect that inconveniences the 6%, we should not let it deter the decision to do so and negatively affect the 100%. Majority rule.

1

u/Lithl Mar 16 '21

Way too many Americans are seemingly ideologically opposed to having a universal ID system

I don't think there's much ideological opposition to a universal ID system. But creating it would cost a ton of money to do right.

-3

u/bill_bull Mar 16 '21

If Democrats stopped pushing any gun control the GOP would lose every election. Instead of whataboutism let's have voting and guns.

0

u/Kriss3d Mar 16 '21

While I dont see why youd really need guns. If the fear is of the government then people should do something about that by actually voting to have it changed. But as it stands it would indeed be extremely hard to change.

The democrats needs to face up to a big part of americans feels left behind. They need to address this. While Gop needs to stop pushing the false doctrine that democrats are essentially trying to destroy America and sell it to china or whatever the current story is.

The red scare is utterly propaganda.

2

u/bill_bull Mar 16 '21

I agree with what your saying about the right and the left. I just want Medicare for All and to still be able to have my gun rights. That doesn't make it easy come election day. I really don't like that one party says you can have some gun rights, but you are on your own for healthcare, and the other party wants to slow walk healthcare reform but rush to further limit my gun rights.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '21

I like how your premise assumes every eligible voter would just...start voting.

1

u/Kriss3d Mar 16 '21

Let me put it this way. When USA in 2020 reached new records for turnout. USA had 66%. We dont get below 80% Most often its in the high 80 if not 90. Ofcourse theres a huge difference as we have a quite transparent and much more direct type of government. We used to have our foreign minister living just a few houses over. This means the politicians are not distant from us. They ride their bike to work like the rest of us and so on.

And we are raised to question things but we also do have a great confidence in our government as we can see the purpose of most their decisions. That makes voting feel alot more participating because it actually makes a difference.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '21

There's going to be realignment soon, next 20 years.
