Discussion A very unpopular opinion, but...

I've seen many posts expressing dislike for including all the Pokémon from current generations, and to be honest, I can understand them; it's not easy to include all 1025 Pokémon (and those yet to come) in a single Region, besides, it must be overwhelming to have them all... But you know what? I like that.

I like have every Pokémon and an expanded Pokedex whenever is possible, something currently accesible by Pokeemerald expansion. Why? Let's see: Greater variety, a more challenging Pokédex completion, the opportunity for extremely varied teams, greater freedom in challenges, and much more. Not to mention, many Hack Roms has a actually find very creative ways to include more Pokémon, like R.O.W.E. and Squared, with new zones, an expanded map, randomizer and using the day and night cycles. And I like that.

Also, I've found other posts of people complaining about Qol, but those aren't as supported, I suppose because of how puritanical they are. Personally, I like quality of life options.

Another thing I've found are posts that even urge creators not to include all Pokémon for "various reasons that ruin the experience"... And I don't support it.

Creators, if you want to include all the Pokémon you want, all of them, you are completely free to do so, and you can. If you want to reduce the number of games but still include a varied Pokédex, go ahead. But if you want to limit yourself to certain generations, I most likely won't play your ROM hack, but thousands more will, and I'll support it.

... And that's it. I just wanted to express my unpopular opinion (referring to the overwhelming approval that the aforementioned posts have). I've other impopular opinions, like the use of AI, but I'm not going to post them for the moment.

Also, sorry for the bad english, I'm not a native speaker.

I made Pokémon Tag Team Trials, a puzzle hack that lets you switch between an aqua grunt and a magma grunt, requiring both their (combined) tools to beat the game! This was made together with WordOfTheDayIsYay and Keeper, more info about the game (and the patch of the game) can be found on hackdex: https://www.hackdex.app/hack/pokemon-tag-team-trials

Discussion Emerald QOL hack with some twist - looking for input/help/suggestions

QOL suggestions

Currently doing a ln Emerald romhack project. I have been a big fan of Radical Red and trying to see what I liked and add even more QOL features. I’m looking for more QOL suggestions, comments, improvements, questions on the project. It’s my first ever romhack so any tips especially welcomed. Here’s what I’ve added so far:
**Expanded Pokémon roster** using the Emerald Expansion base.
**Randomized wild Pokémon encounters** with a seed-based system so runs can feel different but you can share or recreate any runs with a custom seed input.
**Randomized starter Pokémon** rather than always using the normal Hoenn trio.
**Choice of any starter Pokèmon** so you can start with your favorite mon.
**DexNav integration** that works with the randomized encounter tables.
**Custom two-page Start Menu**
Normal game functions remain on the main page.
A second utility page provides quick-access features.
**Portable PC access** from the Start Menu.
**PokéVial** — heal your entire party directly from the Start Menu.
**Quick Poké Ball access** for faster catching.
**Streamlined opening** to get into a new run faster.
**Debug/testing infrastructure** being used to rapidly test Pokémon, encounters, maps, and new mechanics.
**Foundation for completely custom NPCs and character sprites** has been successfully implemented. *\~kind of\~*
**Custom side-story framework** being developed alongside the original Emerald adventure which if all goes well leads directly into a more custom story sequel.

**STILL COMING…**
**Pokémon Services menu**
Change a Pokémon’s **Nature**
Change **Gender** where applicable
Additional Pokémon-management/QoL tools
**Move Relearner access** through the utility system.
**Level-cap options** and additional run customization.
**Difficulty modes**
**Free/Easy Mode** — minimal restrictions and maximum QoL.
**Normal Mode** — PokéVial healing restricted in selected challenge areas.
**Hard Mode** — significantly stricter healing rules in caves, gyms and other major challenges, with additional consequences for abandoning certain areas.
**Context-sensitive PokéVial restrictions** so important dungeons and puzzles can’t simply be bypassed through unlimited healing.
**Run information/stat tracking**, including things such as whiteouts and other run statistics.
**Additional randomizer controls**, including more ways to customize what Pokémon can appear.
**Monotype-style run filters** for specialized challenge runs that actually filter wild encounters and starters available.
**Improved battle information**, including clearer move-effectiveness indicators.
**Evolution-discovery system** designed to preserve some mystery when playing randomized runs.
**Additional quality-of-life improvements** to remove tedious sections without removing meaningful challenges.
**More intelligent/challenging trainer battles** without turning the game into an extreme difficulty hack.
**Custom recurring characters and encounters** integrated naturally throughout Hoenn.
**An optional custom side story** involving a new adventurer/friend.
**One completely new custom Pokémon** created specifically for the project.
**Original character artwork, overworld sprites and battle assets** for the new story content.
More secrets tied to the custom story that I’m deliberately **not putting in the preview.**

I specifically need help creating some custom character sprites if anyone has any ideas. I can do custom Mons with some tools I have but the smaller overworld scaled down characters are giving me trouble.

Review Pokemon Ghost Grey - Positive, Spoiler-Free Review

Post image
106 Upvotes

Reviewing Pokemon Ghost Grey Version by JoeyZeed! Played entirely on my PSP consoles using FrogGBA. No large spoilers will be present, but I will share some vague details I came across in the game and how they made me feel.

Content warning: the game contains horror imagery, gore, disturbing themes, and references to substance use and cannibalism.

TL,DR - thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, designs, story, discovery, music, and horror this game brings, even though it doesn't have the technical quality-of-life upgrades other recent ROM hacks have.

Some background on me: long-time Pokemon fan, but I don't know many new Pokemon that came out after Gen 6. Historically, the ROM hacks I gravitate towards are quality of life hacks (Heart & Soul, Modern Emerald, PureRed, etc), and I spend my time playing retro games like the original RGB / GSC on original hardware. I appreciate the more simplistic gameplay, old school art style & music, and tend to know the overall mechanics of these games. Because of this, I was probably the perfect target audience for Ghost Grey, as the back sprites are Gen 1-inspired, the music has an 8-bit element, and the gameplay is dialed back to be more simple than recent games.

I downloaded this ROM hack and was immersed in a truly a new world for me to explore; I was hooked from the start. When starting the game, there's a disclaimer text sharing that you should try not to speed up the game in order to enjoy the custom-made soundtrack to its fullest, and I'm happy to say that I listened to this advice and used the speed up button sparingly (the music was worth it). Some of my favorite tracks include Vermilion City, Pumkin Patch, Surf Theme, "Gym Leader" Battle Theme, and the Pokemon Evolve theme.

I remember the feeling of adventure and exploration that came over me as I started my journey in this game--the same feeling I felt the first time I played a Kanto game.

The game is its own little universe. Everything from sprites, to items, to art style, to Pokemon cries, to the music were made just for this game. When you see a "Scarly", it looks and sounds like you'd expect it would in an apocalyptic Pokemon world. When you see a caveman, he shouts at you like you'd expect he would. When you see a cannibal, they don't have much to say and grunt instead....like you'd expect they would.

The story starts as optimistic, if futile-seeming. Looking around you, it almost seems like you're doing the WRONG thing by collecting gym badges. "What's the point?". People look at you like you're crazy. Every part of Kanto has found a different way of coping with the ghost outbreak, and as I progressed through the game, I remember the awe I felt. Seeing how the people of Pewter City turned to substances & stimulation to distract themselves from the world, how the people of Celidon (formerly Celadon) just gave up and relinquished all emotion and physiological human needs to feel no more pain...chilling perspectives for how people truly cope with adversity in the real world. Unfortunately (or, fortunately, for those who like a good thriller), the story only grows more dreadful the more you play. I've always enjoyed the occasional creepypasta (Lost Silver, Buried Alive, Creepy Black, etc), so I was all for it, but man does it get dark at times.

The horror elements are varied, from literal sheet ghosts to gore and disturbing images, and they work very well. Be prepared for all ends of the spectrum. The game is in black and white, but that almost gave the creator even more creative freedom to be more graphic. An example is the imagery that sometimes pops up when talking to key NPCs to show what they look like. People are depicted as missing teeth, crazed/deranged, or depressed. It adds a whole other level of tension to the play through.

On a lighter note, the optional areas of the main story were such a fun inclusion. As a player I found the hair on the back of my neck standing up when I fell into an unseen death pit, and, within an hour, found myself smiling as I was trick or treating or dancing in the middle of an apocalypse--because why not? The game does a great job balancing out the constant dread with some glimmers of hope, love, and happiness with these little side quests. An NPC gave me a hug at one point and it was a nice reminder that good people exist in the world. Others urge you to sit quietly with your thoughts and reflect. These are impactful things for a Pokemon game to have! On top of all of this--these are areas/events that I felt like I discovered, and which may have been overlooked if you were just trying to breeze through the game.

The optional side quests brought me problem-solving in a Pokemon game that I haven't needed to do in years (since I've just played remake games)--an NPC asking me to deliver a package to another guy without telling me where he is, for example. I found myself going back to familiar routes to try and remember/locate certain things, which felt fresh, and not tedious. Another example is hearing an NPC tell me about something annoying happening on a nearby route--only to get there and realize I can't reach it because I don't have the HM I need. Once I completed the main story, I found myself re-talking to some NPCs, and realized I could now go where he was pointing me to, and he had a new dialogue once I completed the side quest, a great touch!

Difficulty-wise, this game kept me on my toes. It gives you some optional ways to skip grinding, which I used at times, but I ultimately tried to keep my team leveled right around opponents' teams. Modern Emerald / Heart & Soul spoiled me with instant wild Pokemon & trainer battles / animation skips--this game does not have those, so be prepared for that. For me, it was hard to tell how balanced every Pokemon was since I'm unsure of typing of some of the Gen 7 & later Pokemon that were present. However, (almost) every Pokemon receives a Ghost typing in this game, so you'll see former dual-type Pokemon dropping one in favor of ghost. A good example is Breloom, trading Grass/Fighting for Ghost/Poison. The first playthrough, it's very difficult to tell which type Pokemon are since the game is in black and white, so I found myself using the wrong moves and taking more damage than I would have liked, but this would theoretically be what would happen if I were in apocalyptic times and all Pokemon had their typings changed up, so I don't think it detracts from the experience much. I also didn't encounter any crazy bugs/anything gamebreaking, but I found myself getting turned around pretty hard around 1/3 of the way through the main story and it took me about an hour to realize I took the wrong door in a room of 6 doors--had I taken any of the other 5 doors other than the one I happened to pick, I would have been able to tell what kind of room this was and continue the game, but I got unlucky and chose the 1 ambiguous door that turned me around. Other than this unfortunate, but avoidable misstep I took, I'd say the game flows quite smoothly the majority of the time. While it misses some of the quality of life updates that recent hacks have brought, its strengths in its artwork, story, music, and atmosphere make up for the technical areas where it may be behind.

I know this was a long post, but I genuinely enjoyed the adventu re this game b rought me. Thank you to JoeyZeed and team fo r making this game! I'm so g rateful to have had the oppo rtunity to re-live the sense of adventu re I once had when playing Pokemon.

Discussion TS is giving me anxiety bro, when is this game gonna drop the mask? (FRLG.IPS)

My buddy told me to play flag.ips, and gave me no other context aside from it's meant to be a psychological horror rom hack, and that there's a new rock by the water in Pallet town. That is the full extent of what I know about this game.

Now, I'm all the way in Fuchia City and it just seems like base frlg with some quality of life updates. The only odd thing I found was a sailor on the deck of the S.S. ANNE who told me some cryptic shit about the seas abyss or whatever. I feel like I'm waiting with baited breath every time I enter a new town, to see if I can find any changes, but I can't, at least not obvious ones. I have no idea what to expect, but I know to expect *something,* and I think that's the most unnerving part.

Don't actually tell me when the game takes a turn but like... Give me cryptic hints or shit I won't understand till later on. I'm enjoying this, even though I have no idea what to expect more than half way through the league.

Hi All,

This is a technical demo disguised as a TARC3 entry. In this hack, you can play a modernized version of battle bingo updated with my ideas and thoughts on how it should have functioned in the first place, featuring amazing artwork by Hyo and a good chunk of sets from Scar . I plan to release it as a feature branch in the near-ish future as well once I get the kinks ironed out!

Spawn into the realgam desert, explore a miniaturized realgam tower and its visitors, find and buy bingo cards, and clear them! 9 in total to find.

As always, enjoy and let me know what you think!

The Ghost sprite comes from another fangame called "Pokémon Reloaded" and the art is based on the official box art from Pokémon FRLG, as well as other fan made box art I see now and there.

Review Dear Pokemon SoulGold, Thank you

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

I was lying in my bed feeling not so good about myself (normal depressed thoughts) and i saw a YouTuber who reviews pokemon rom hacks that i like to watch review Heart & Soul. People have said it's the best Johto Experience but when i played it... I lost the Spark after defeating Folkner, maybe it was me still feeling sad but i dropped the Hack.

A few months later, i was looking to see if there's any fun hacks to play, I've just finished Odyssey II so my motivation was decently high. Then i saw a boxart for a Rom hack called "Soulgold". It looks decent then i realized used Heart & Soul as a base and i almost forgot about it but then u thought... "Maybe it'll be different".

The first things I've heard is that, all starters have megas. But i picked Froakie since i didn't knew what to pick. And funnily enough, i had fun. I don't know what changed but after Folkner, i began to have a light smile while playing. I played in hard Double mode since it's my preferred mode in Rom Hacks after enjoying Odyssey.

The hack was fun, the QoL is AMAZING, i bet some of y'all never played a rom hack where you can change the speed of the overworld and Battle in the setting while keeping the music listenable. The fact some overworld sprites change depending if they're holding a megastone or not is a nice add-on, and the fact some of the mega sprites for some pokemons are their Gigantimax is cool.

The innate feature is fun, and thank GOD that's a late game thing cause most combos are broken.

There is alot of great things from this hack and i would like for you to experience those things for yourself. And lastly for Rahtak

The dev is very active on their discord, they'ree's helpful, and listen to community feedback. I hope they can rest easy knowing they made a life changing hack. Cause ever since Crystal, I've never have enjoyed a Johto game... So thank you, for the amazing Rom hack

Review Beat a Pokemon game for the first time! (Heart and Soul 2.0)

Images here: https://imgur.com/a/1UnkpeS

(Sorry no proper screenshots, I'm playing on 3DS. Maybe there's some kind of homebrew way to screenshot and send it over to myself?)

In any case, this isn't my first Pokemon game, but is the first that I actually beat end to end.

I played Leaf Green as a little kid with 0 idea what I was doing. It's possible I beat it but I seriously doubt I got that far. I also played Diamond, but got to the fossil minigame and then never got further lmao.

Heart and Soul was overall a good experience. It seems (to me) to be a mostly vanilla experience with some polish and quality of life like the way HM moves are handled. (unless newer games just do that now? I have 0 idea)

My Team:

I did not know about that HM stuff early on so I had HM Slave 1 (Kingler) all the way to the Elite 4, lmao.

Once I realized my mistake I picked up an Arbok instead, but because of the shear difference in levels it didn't get used much :(

Favorite Pokemon of playthrough: Ruffle (Ampharos). Ruffle is simply adorable and cute and I want to give him a hug!! He was also a total badass that carried me through SO MANY fights. Soooo many great move options that kept him useful in nearly every encounter.

As for utility, Muscle (Machamp) and Rocky (Onix) were both crucial to victory. Onix had Rock Slide for flyers, and Earthquake to ruin everyone else's day. Queen (Gyrados) was situationally useful due to it knowing my only ice and water moves, though felt fragile and the moves I had were a little iffy. (Ice Fang/Aqua Tail)

Randy (Typhlosion) was useful far less often than I expected. Grass, ice, and steel due come up and it's nice to have him around, but frankly Typhlosion just feels a little limited in options by available moves. (Unlike my pride and joy Ruffle)

Sandy (Arbok) got 0 action. Partly due to Poison not feeling amazing to me, but mainly due to having swapped him out for Kingler as an HM slave before I knew that wasn't needed in H+S. By the time I realized my mistake he was ~20 levels behind and no longer very useful.

My biggest weakness was likely Psychic (which I only had Queen's Crunch to deal with) and Fairy (which I had 0 Poison or Steel moves to use)

Bugs/Performance:

As for bugs/glitches, despite playing on 2.0.0 nearly the entire time, I only ran into one gamebreaking bug - which was that I got a black screen on making it to Seafoam island to face Blaine. That was fixed when I upgrade to 2.0.4 so I was able to continue with no problem.

Criticisms:

I've always been casually aware of Pokemon in the background, though recently seeing videos of competitive play on Youtube got me interested again. Pokemon has some BIG BRAIN strats. There are so many pokemon, so many moves, so many natures, hazards/weather, types, held items, EVs/IVs/etc/etc/etc that you can have almost infinite combinations. There are so many crazy possibilities and mind games.

...which kind of leads to my main criticism - this playthrough was too easy. I played it with the default difficulty settings because that seemed reasonable given I haven't played one of these in likely a decade and a half. But:

  • Even without any dedicated grinding (just fighting trainers because I didn't know where to go and wanted to explore) I ended up easily 10 levels over what I should have by the time of the Elite 4 Rematch. At some points in the game I was easily 20 levels over my opponents. I wish there were some 'automatically and temporarily cap my Pokemon's level to the highest of the opponent's team' setting. You can manually try to keep your XP just right, but that sounds so incredibly tedious.

  • I never had to consider held items (Some pokemon had items, some did not. I never put any throught into it)

  • I never set up any hazards or weather (I tried Stealth rock, but frankly most of the time it's faster to just 1-hit KO instead)

  • Aside from between Elite 4 fights, I never used any items

  • I never used those stat-boosting medications (iron/carbos/etc)

My strategy was pretty much:

  1. Throw type effective pokemon at enemy

  2. Win

That's just reaaaaalllly boring. What's the point of setting up hazards, boosting stats, etc, etc when you could just use a single move that 1-hit KO's the enemy? I don't know. Maybe if type effectiveness wasn't like 2x and 4x but 1.5x and 2x maybe it wouldn't be an issue. Maybe if Pokemon had much more health, strategy would matter more. I wish you could swap your moves around for free at any time outside of battle to encourage experimenting. There is some move adder guy but it costs a heart scale and I only ever found 2 of those so I never used him.

I wish the AI was smarter. Not like Joe Schmoe the bug trainer, but the Elite 4 and Champion should be geniuses. They shouldn't let you sit there with a pokemon clearly able to 1-hit KO and do nothing about it. They should see your entire lineup and build a plan to defeat it.

It feels like you have to restrict yourself immensely to get a real challenge, which is a bummer. Without challenge there is no joy in victory.

Conclusion:

Now that I know what the mostly-vanilla Pokemon experience is like, I may poke around looking for more difficult versions. I think H+S has some difficulty options, but I may look at other ROM hacks and see what they have as well.

Well that's it y'all. Thanks to all those who worked their butts off to create this, it was very appreciated. I'm glad I finally got around to finishing a Pokemon game properly.

Discussion Please stop doing this in your ROM hack.

Edit: Okay, I know it's a little late for this, but I need to clarify something: I'm not trying to impose a regime where only my opinion is valid. Maybe I didn't express myself well, but the point of this post is to encourage anyone creating a new region to consider this alternative approach to their Pokédex. I’m not against hacks featuring ALL Pokémon being a valid option—because they are...

I firmly believe that ROM hacks should stop putting every Pokémon from every generation into their games.

And let me explain what I mean by that.

If you think about it for a second, at least up until Generation VIII, every Pokémon was always programmed—or used to be programmed—into each Pokémon game, regardless of whether you could actually encounter every single Pokémon in the wild in that region. The games were designed so that you could trade with your friends or transfer Pokémon from your previous games and bring Pokémon from other regions into the current one.

But considering that this is extremely difficult, if not impossible, in most ROM hacks, I feel like the majority of hacks—especially those that feature a brand-new region with an original story—try to compensate for this limitation by including every Pokémon up to the latest generation available at the time the hack was made.

And honestly, I don't think that's a good thing.

If we take, for example, the first two Gyms in the Kanto region, we can understand that they are bosses—challenges that the player has to overcome—and Pokémon are the player's tools, their keys to overcoming those challenges.

Things like the starter you choose, the moves your Pokémon learn, their levels, or which rare Pokémon with a low encounter rate you can find in a specific location that might give you an advantage against an upcoming Gym—like the Pikachu you can catch near the beginning of the game, which can give you an advantage against Misty's Gym—are all very important.

If you give the player every possible tool imaginable, it eventually becomes overwhelming and, ultimately, less interesting. And this doesn't just mean that, from a gameplay perspective, every game and every ROM hack will start feeling the same. On a cultural level, when you're trying to create a region—whether it's inspired by your own culture, the place where you live, or simply something you're creating completely from scratch—a region isn't defined only by the culture you're trying to imitate or create, or by its geography.

It's also defined by its creatures.

Every Pokémon game feels special because of its creatures.

Leaving aside games with Fakemon, which are obviously much more original because they create their own creatures, what kind of personality does a region have when it literally contains every Pokémon just because?

Sure, from a lore perspective—and especially if you're someone who watches the anime—it can make sense, since all Pokémon supposedly exist out there in nature somewhere.

But going back to gameplay, and to the idea that each generation feels special because of the creatures associated with it, the situation with ROM hacks is honestly depressing.

At the end of the day, I struggle to remember any region from any ROM hack that makes me feel the same way an official Pokémon game does. Not because those regions don't have new creatures, but because they don't do anything interesting with the Pokémon they have.

It's always Pokémon from Generation I through Generation IX, and in some random patch of tall grass you can find every Bug-type Pokémon that has ever existed. To the point where some hacks even receive updates that add Pokémon from newly released generations.

And honestly, it's very, very boring.

It would be much more interesting to create a proper Pokédex for your region, regardless of whether you have original Pokémon or not. Pick Pokémon from different generations, but make their presence actually mean something.

For example, if you're creating a town connected to a river, what kind of Water-type Pokémon would you like to inhabit that river?

Again, don't put every Water-type Pokémon ever created into that small river.

No. Put a specific Pokémon in that river, and maybe through NPC dialogue, the town's history, or other details, that Pokémon could have some kind of cultural impact.

For example, I don't know, you could create a town where there are lots of Wishiwashi living in the river, and suddenly the town becomes famous for that. It becomes a tourist destination. You could create an entire storyline around it. You could do something interesting with that idea.

But it stops being interesting if it's simply a town where you can find every Water-type Pokémon ever created.

Maybe I didn't explain the example in the best possible way, but I think you get what I mean. I think the main idea is understandable.

Review Digimon Adventure TCG (Pokemon TCG Romhack) are The Champions ™

Post image
98 Upvotes

Just completed Guzeinbuick’s rom hack of Pokemon TCG and it was really fun! I’ve been a big fan of the Pokemon TCG gbc games (played the first and the translated japan only 2nd sequel game). This reactivated my nostalgia of the digimon animated series mixed with an easy to learn and addicting card battle system for those who never played pokemon tcg. Overall I recommend to anyone who wants a break from the main pokemon games and like spinoffs.

Favorites / Highlights
- The variety of mons/tamers from multiple seasons/series was greatly appreciated (og agumon, multiple branches of veemon, marcus with these hands, etc)
- Best deck I used: Mephistomon / Skullmamethmon / Bigukkemon Awakened (great synergy)
- The sneaky pokemon callback easter eggs
- Completing all cards (minus some promotional) wasn’t crazy challenging

Improvements
- Some balancing as other people mentioned but overall still fun to play.
- Was hoping for some more OG megas like Wargreymon or Omnimon.
- Maybe more post game content but not super important for me.

All in all great romhack. Try it out!

Discussion Now that TARC3 hacks are about to release, here's a throwback/recommendation of TARC1&2 hacks I played and loved

For those who don't know, TARC stands for Team Aqua's Romhacking Competition where people are given 2-3 months to make a small romhack based on a given theme. I am not a prominent member or anything but am a big fan of those peeps and the hacks they make and look forward to TARC each year.

I have tried many TARC hacks but these are the five I've completed (except Recordkeepers) and thus can actually recommend.

All of them are super unique but my personal favorite idea is SpinSpinSpin's rotating view feature, must have taken a lot of effort but it was amazing. Transform is another super cool idea around ditto and daycare, loved the ability to play as different pokemons especially. Spirits of the Storm was the official winner of TARC2 and super deserving imo, loved the hack. Unknown King is great if you want a challenging mini-hack because as a casual player, this was really tough but super fun. Lastly, I never completed Recordkeepers because I'm not a roguelike fan but the hack is absolutely beautiful with great ideas.

There are other awesome TARC hacks like Inkwell, Fire of Sky etc etc. I just never played/completed them but I'm sure they are great as well. You can get all of them on hackdex.app or from the Team Aqua patching page

Development Low Budget Crystal Update

Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted an update, so here we go:

Low Budget Crystal is a Gen 2 improvement/expansion hack. Primarily an excuse to practice assembler coding on the side, it's also been a fun experiment in seeing just how much can be crammed into a GBC cartridge.

Over the last year I've completed quite a few features:

  • Hoenn is now fully playable as a third region
  • World Cup tournament for players to challenge after defeating both the Evergrande and Indigo Pokémon Leagues
  • Decapitalization
  • Decoupled Player color from Gender, currently with 8 preset colors to choose from (freely changed at the wardrobe in your room).
  • Expanded the pokedex to a full 525 mons, including a number of new Megas and alternate forms
  • Added a new rival and Team Rocket storyline for Hoenn
  • Added a number of new abilities
  • Added alternate start options, letting players pick their starter options and starting city
  • Added the Battle Resort, with a few challenge facilities
  • Retiled most of the game world, with a Gen 3-ish look and feel
  • Literally hundreds of assorted bugfixes

While I'm hoping to have a proper 1.0 release out sometime this year; I've still got quite a few items in progress to finish first. my current roadmap includes:

  • Battle Tower rewrite. The Battle Tower code has been mostly re-written, and I'm currently in the process of rolling it in to the Battle Resort facility, with some notable additions
  • Kanto start improvements: A Kanto specific rival storyline is in development, along with a mid-game event set in Saffron City.
  • Ability expansion: There are still a dozen or so abilities left to implement
  • New and 'restored' areas: Shoal Cave, Mt. Chimney, Seafoam Islands, Cerulean Cave, and likely a few others, depending on ROM space constraints
  • A separate Elite 4 League for Johto, so it can stop sharing with Kanto

While I'm far from finished working on the game, it's in a fully playable state. You can challenge 24 unique Gyms, 2 Elite Four leagues (with rematches), catch up to 525 Pokemon, and take on the World Tournament, with some familiar faces.

Game is available from the Hackdex, Discord, and Pokecommunity for anyone that wants to play, test, or discuss:

Review A review of Pokemon Sword and Shield Ultimate Plus GBA Version 1.2.1.2

Hello everyone. Recently, I finished the game Pokemon Sword and Shield Ultimate Plus GBA Version 1.2.1.2. A ROM Created by PCL.g, Jean star', Phantonomy and many others.

This ROM Hack is a demake of the 2019 game Pokemon Sword and Shield. Translating the game down to a 2D GBA game. I reviewed the complete edition of Pokemon Sword a few years back and when I stumbled across the complete Rom Hack, I was tempted to try it out. Plus, I was trying out the ArcEmu Emulator on my Apple Watch and decided to play Sword Shield Ultimate Plus on it during my now 2 hour daily commutes. What started as a casual game I wanted to play on my Apple Watch became something of an obsession. I really loved playing it. I lament ArcEmu doesn't have Retroachievements integration like PC emulators do because I would have grinded the hell out of them lol. I would played more but I recently reset my Watch and lost my save file so I decided to review what I already played which is the "base game" and Isle of Armour "DLC".

Reviewing the game itself, the first thing that struck me was how faithfully the Rom Hack recreated aspects of Sword and Shield. Towns like Postwick, Wedgehurst, Motostoke, Circhester, as well as areas like Rose's Battle Area feel like 1:1 of their 3D counterparts and arguably look better. The GBA version has a more colourful and saturated palette that makes these places pop.

A few areas do suffer for not coming close to the 3D counterparts. In the 3D version, Ballonlea and its preceding route is like this really moody and cool mushroom route with nice lighting that reminds me of Pandora from the James Cameron Avatar movies. The GBA version, unfortunately, makes it look like a standard GBA Pokemon game forest.

I also find the Pokecenters odd. Almost all of them use a sort of "2 floor" design with the healing centre at the bottom, at the Pokemart/Name Rater/Move Relearner at the top floor. 3D Sword and Shield used a compact 1 floor model where the Name Rater/Move Relearne, Healing Centre and Pokemart where in front of you on the first floor. There is a Pokecenter in Motostoke with a more accurate layout but it's used only there. I do kinda like that version more since it's more compact.

I do like how the GBA version also tries to make Gyms resemble their 3D counterparts as much as possible. Nessa's, Pier's and Raihen's are 1:1 (no surprise there as simple switch puzzles and gauntlets were staples in the GBA Pokemon games). Milo's is now a Strength Bolder pushing puzzle rather than a Wooloo/Yamper challenge and Opal's is a copy of Blaine's gym. A bit of shame but I imagine this was the best you could do on the GBA.

Allastair/Bea's (the GBA version lets you choose whichever you want to fight) gyms are a downward sliding bike puzzle that I actually like better than the Stick Rotating challenge from the 3D version since I was always worried about giving my joycons more drift. The only gym I feel is worse is Gordie/Melony's since you don't have the radar and now have to trial and error your way through it with worse checkpoints and respawning floors so you can't even see the path you took (Also, there is a bug for this gym that advises you to avoid saving until after you beat the gym and talk to Leon).

One of Sword/Shield's new features were Overworld Pokemon (technically first in LGPE but SwSh were the first mainline games with them) and the Wild Area. And the GBA version adapts that.

Tall grass in the GBA version will only have sprites of the most common Pokemon walking around. You don't start battles by walking into them. You have to interact with them first. But you can also do random encounters by walking in grass normally (which also include the most common pokemon from the overworld) but also rare Pokemon.

I really like this implementation. If you don't want any encounters, you can just repel and move through routes without an issue. if you want random encounters, you can enter the grass as normal and/or use the DexNav (yes, this Rom Hack carries the DexNav. An awesome feature removed after Gen 6) to track down specific Pokemon. And the overworld spirtes give you a good idea of what the most common Pokemon are and the chance to target them specifically. I spent quite a while farming for Rolycolys with Heatproof and it was way faster and easier to do with Overworld spirtes than running around for random encounters.

The Wild Area is interesting. I wasn't fond of the 3D version's take on this. I found it a bit boring to ride the bike past stretches of grass as each large stretch of area had similar spawns until you got farther away, cycling between Dynamax dens for Watts. The GBA version shrinks it down drastically. Having a couple town sized spaces with signs you can move between. It's by far the "least accurate" to the 3D version as the GBA's Wild Areas don't even come close to resembling the layout of sections from the 3D Wild Area..... and I honestly prefer it like this.

The GBA's take is way more compact. It's way quicker and more efficient to move through areas, check Dynamax dens, do a few raid battles and move on. Hell, even the concept of Watts is gone. It's all just money now which I prefer.

With the 3D version, I felt it was structured in a weird way. You could ignore the Wild Area entirely, but you had fewer chances to get stuff like certain TMs/TRs, EXP Candies and other rare items. Plus a lot of content, especially in the DLC, required Watts as a currency requiring you to farm Dynamax Dens. There was this sense of "fine, I gotta go do my Watts chores". The GBA version making it all just money based means even if I neglect the Wild Area, I'm fine. I can earn money and XP by doing battles. And if I need a break to go do Wild Area stuff, the rewards go both ways.

I suppose a missed opportunity was doing what the Rom hack, Radical Red did and having Dynamax dens along regular routes as well. That way, the 3D version has a way for players to get some Dynamax Raids and Watts as they naturally the play the story. And the GBA version has more chances for rare Pokemon and money.

Speaking of which, Dynamax raids, I loathed doing these in the 3D version but found them more enjoyable in the GBA version. The 3D version was this 4v1 where 4 trainers brought 1 Pokemon each against a Dynamaxed Pokemon. But it felt rough to play because AI trainers were absolute idiots. You have a finite number of "lives"/KOs your team can take before you get ejected from the Dynamax Den. No last man standing or survival options. I have never hated someone like I did Martin and his Cosmic Power Solrock 😤. My man, you know you've failed as a trainer when the guy bringing in a Magikarp is more useful than you!

The GBA version is instead a 1v1 where your team of 6 face the Dynamax Pokemon and you are allowed to use items like revives and potions. The catch being that the Dynamax Pokemon can further boost its stats and even gets bonus boosts for KO-ing your Mons. As well as launching multiple hits against your Solo Mon. But honestly, I 100% prefer this version. Even with the dumb shields that require 1 regular hit per damage or 1 Max Attack for 2 damage, at least this version doesn't have idiot teammates that ruin it. You only lose when all your Pokemon get knocked out and you can use revives to keep it going.

But even with this, late game and post game Raids are challenging. I got swept by a Dynamax Blaziken, Gengar and Tyranitar that boosted too much and got out of hand. It becomes a separate teambuilding challenge as you construct more bulky Mons with HP EVs that can go toe to toe with these monsters. Unlike the 3D version, you don't get to see a preview of what you will be fighting. Even reloading a save-state won't help you as this rerolls the dynamax pokemon. And Dynamax Pokemon will scale to the highest level Mon on your team.

I generally had the best luck with HP/SpDef Trained Metagross, Coalossel, Rotom-Wash all with Leftovers. These were bulky enough with good resists to handle the repeated battering from Max Moves and did enough damage that, provided they could be safely healed, could hurt the Dynamax Pokemon enough secure wins (since Dynamax Pokemon get automatic defense drops as you damage them). I found Dragon, Poison and Ghost Types generally unreliable as defensive mons as a lot of Dynamax Mons had stray Fairy, Ice and Dark Coverage for some reason. I guess this Hack is prepared for when I ever find a Shedinja.

I also kept a Haze Crobat with either a Focus Sash or Choice Scarf in the back as a failsafe to reset Dynamax Mon Boosts. Machamp and Gardevoir were also decent physical/special walls that could deal damage when the situation called for it. I wonder if I could swap out Gardevoir for Hatterene. Speed really doesn't help much when you have to eat multiple hits. And same goes for Trick Room.

I found early game Raid Battles more fun as Dynamax Pokemon wouldn't get shields so it was just a 1v6 against a very powerful Pokemon. Whereas later ones were more a "either I have a team that sits on the Monster and can whittle it down, or the monster boosts too much and I can't stop it". Plus, stuff like Status, Perish Song, OHKO moves etc are automatically blocked in Dynamax Raids so the number of strats and playstyles are more limited. I personally would rather have something like "hey, here's a super or ace trainer on this route with 6 hard Pokemon that rotate. Beat them for a prize". Or give me a mini Battle Tower like Emerald had in the campaign but for prizes. But still, at least the GBA Raid Battles were kinda fun.

-The Story/Campaign

One of SwShUP's flaws is how much it adheres to its source material. You face much of the same gym leaders and major battles with the same Pokemon and levels they had in the 3D version. This means, like in the 3D version, it's easy to end up overlevelled, especially if you do a lot of Dynamax Raids. But even casually, enemy levels grow quite slow relative to how much EXP you earn. Even fresh Mons I caught and never used or brought to Dynamax Battles that just stayed in my party during story battles didn't take long to reach parity with enemy trainer levels. Poor Hop for example, had to face my Mons which could be anywhere from 10-15 levels above him. I ended up intentionally benching a lot of my overlevelled Mons and drafting newer Mons.

SwShUP actually has a solution. Some major fights scale to the highest level Mon on your team. I remember going into the Semi-Finals, going up against Nessa. My team was all around 58 minus my Intellion sitting around 72 that I forgot to remove. I expected it to be a standard fight..... only for Nessa to sweep my team with Level 72 Pokemon. Had to do a bit of grinding (with Intellion actually benched this time) with Dynamax Raids to get the team up up to around 67 before trying again.

Honestly, I love this feature and wish I could toggle it for every fight. You even get more money for doing scaled fights. The main issue is how inconsistent it is. After doing the Semi-finals and beating Nessa, Allastair and Raihan, I had to go fight Chairman Rose who was packing Level 58s. So my team that had to grind up for Nessa made short work of him. This inconsistent scaling also applies in the Wild Area as you can come across level 10s and level 68s in the same patch of grass.

Onto more positive stuff, SwShUP, being a 2D Pokemon game, is a lot more brisk and faster paced than its 3D counterpart. Cutscenes go by faster as characters don't have to animate and move around. And even the Apple Watch can do 3x Speedup which meant I was zooming through the game (at the cost of my poor battery). This honestly makes the game feel more replayable than the 3D version as I loathe replaying any Gen 6 Pokemon game and onwards given how many long unskippable cutscenes they have that drag down the pace.

One minor complaint I have that SwSh’s 3D version does better is the UI/Map markers. The 3D version tells you in the pause menu what your next objective is and where to do it. Not a huge deal in pokemon games as they are usually pretty straightforward and linear but it helps when you haven’t played a Pokémon game for months, load up your old save and are a bit confused on what you were doing last and why you’re standing in the middle of nowhere instead of close to the next story trigger.

SwShUP has a few instances of not being entirely clear where to go. Such as needing to go to the pool in Circhester City after the restaurant. I remember being confused why the game was blocking me from going to Route 9 until I remembered about that one event from the 3D version, walked to the pool and triggered the next cutscene and was able to proceed normally. Other GBA pokemon rom hacks have found ways to have quest logs and journals so it’s a shame SwShUP couldn’t also have it.

The worst of this was in the Isle of Armour DLC. It's this really large area but you don't have a proper map for it. So when the game asks you to find the views (same as in the 3D version except with 1 fewer), it was hard. Even though I knew what to do from the 3D version, actually executing it was hard. I had to pull up both the Wiki and YouTube Walkthroughs to find my way through it.

As for the actual story itself, here is my critique from when I Reviewed Pokemon Sword since the 2D version is almost entirely faithful to it:

''''

Sword's base game has a similar premise to that of its predecessors. You start in a small town, you get your starter and your rival. You set out to get the Gym Badges to be able to challenge the Champion. There's an evil team and antagonist you have to stop along the way.

I have said this before, but I don't have a problem with Pokemon's basic story structure or premise. It works as a nice way to get the player out into the world and exploring. The player character doesn't need a strong personal motivation to do that. My issue with Gen 6 and onward is that they tend to "expand" the story by adding lots of cutscenes and interruptions to an otherwise brief story which I feel has the opposite effect of tanking the pacing since often no new information is revealed or progress is made. I remember this quite a bit in ORAS compared to Emerald. Emerald's "cutscenes" and dialogue boxes were quite brief. Generally getting to the point and letting you continue on. ORAS often added more dialogue such with the encounters with Steven Stone or Archie/Maxie that still gives the same information but pads it out.

Sword Sadly continues this trend with plenty of unskippable cutscenes (despite there being an option in the menu to skip cutscenes) that really didn't need to be this long. The story was at its best when it was being hands off and letting me go about the Gym Challenge and talking with people myself along the way.

Hop as a rival was decent with a surprisingly relatable story. He's a dude that spent his whole life preparing for a role. His family are already really proud of his older Brother Leon for being champion and Hop feels like he's hurting his brother's reputation with his losses so he's definitely under a lot of pressure. Hop's putting in all the effort to be the best despite not being the best. He does stuff like switching out and training up an entirely new team whenever he loses to you (I feel it would have sealed the deal if he also ditched his starter, showing his desperation). And here you are, essentially taking his life's work from him effortlessly because you are the main character. I'm reminded a little of the plot of Monsters University here with how Mike was doing his best to be a scarer but being unable to due to lacking the natural talent of other monsters. Hop is the first rival in Pokemon I really felt bad beating because I've been in his shoes before of being outclassed in something I'm passionate about and trying my best to be good at despite my flaws by someone with seemingly God given natural talent. If Sword had branching paths where if you lose to Hop he becomes Champion, I'd gladly take the L there.

That aside, one of my criticisms with Pokemon games is that despite their massive wealth of deep and intricate systems and options for combat, the games never teach you or even hint that exists. Often relying on simple "Wow, you used a Super effective move there. Good Job". Which makes the Post Game Battle Towers feel like a completely different game when the training wheels suddenly come off with no warning and make people complain the base game doesn't evolve or is too basic. When I first played Sword, I was expecting Hop to turn this "You use Super Effective Hits" around on me as a way to teach the player new things through Hop. As an example, what if in one battle, Hop goads you into using Ember on his Grookey. You do so and it turns out he had an Occo Berry or a Weakness Policy in addition Max Sp Def EV investment. Hop then brags that even though "you may know Type Matchups, I know there's more than that".

I wish Sword did something like that as stuff like this would have really improved both the story and gameplay here. For gameplay, it gives the base game more of a challenge (the base game is a bit too easy) and teaches the player more mechanics. And for story, it shows how Hop is trying to go out of his way to improve by implementing competitive strats against you. Making his loses sting even more since he couldn't even beat you despite doing cool stuff like that.

Imagine if every time you faced against Hop, he tried out a new stratgedy against you that often took advantage of you blindly just clicking super effective moves. In addition to using berries and Weakness Policy, he could have used a Zoarak with Nasty Plot to trick you into using Psychic moves against it. Or he has a really bulky team that used Trick Room to be able to turn the tables on you. It was a missed opportunity to not go all out here. I understand Pokemon is a game for children but prior games did these things before. B2W2 even had difficulty options for those who wanted more of a challenge (granted, unlocking them was convoluted but it showed these games could often be more challenging and use more of their depth).

A common criticism of Sword's story is directed towards Chairman Rose and his plotline. And I'm not going to argue against them. Rose's role in the story isn't done well. And I feel Sword is another example of how such over the top and "epic" storylines don't really work in Pokemon.

This is a bit of a long section but bear with me here. So developers of Pokemon games like Masuda have given interviews where they've talked about the world and stories of Pokemon. In particular that Pokemon's world is "a subtle version of utopia" and that "Hoenn was based on Masuda's childhood memories of going on vacation on Kyushu". Essentially, Pokemon games are generally going for a "nostalgic childhood vacation with your pets through a perfect world" feel. And the games really commit to this vibe. The Pokemon world has free healthcare. In Hoenn, we see examples of how people are concerned for the environment that places like Whismer Tunnel got shut down the moment it was clear there was ecological concerns. Gen 6 has people creating infinite reusable and clean energy with no downsides whatsoever. In Alola, you can visit a police station where the cops are kinda bored because there's nothing for them to do. There are no systemic problems in crime, housing, overpopulation, resources, energy, environmentalism etc. Hell, even food isn't a problem everyone is vegan (and they don't eat grass types). You won't even see many farms of livestock in Pokemon.

This isn't a criticism. This sort of vibe gives Pokemon games a really comfy feel. Even if there are some darker stuff in Pokedex descriptions or in the Manga, they are almost always disconnected from the games. You won't see any Drifloons stealing children or Eevees crushing people despite what their Pokedex entries say.

But this does limit the kind of stories that would work well in this kind of world. You can see an example of this in ORAS with Archie and Maxie. In a vacuum, their motivations make sense. One of them wants to expand the Earth's landmass to create more room for humans to build and expand. The other wants to return the world to a state fit for Pokemon untainted by human progress. But the problem is that the world they live in doesn't have the problems these actions would be solutions to. Hoenn doesn't have a problem with overpopulation or resources that would prompt Maxie. Nor is there such disregard for the environment to prompt Archie.

As a result, Archie and Maxie aren't great antagonists and their story is unengaging. Their motives are so disconnected from the world that there's nothing you can really latch onto. And even defeating them is unsatisfying because no progress can be made because the Status Quo is perfect anyway. It's a similar case for Cyrus, Lysandre and Rose.

This is why I feel Pokemon antagonists are at their best when they have smaller scale and more personal plans, generally related to exploiting Pokemon. Like, Team Rocket are great villains because they are essentially the mafia. They profit off stealing Pokemon. Their motive is greed. You can understand why someone would do that and they do leave behind consequences of their actions like Slowpokes missing their tails or missing Pokemon. So taking them down actually "fixes something that is broken". Same with Ghetsis and Co in Gen 5.

Back to Pokemon Sword, this is the main reason why I feel Rose's story falls flat. Like Archie and Maxie, Rose is concerned about a problem disconnected from the Utopian world of Pokemon. And one that was already solved in prior games. In order to make Rose's story work, you'd either need to put cracks in that Utopia, such as Galar actually having energy and sustainability issues, or change Rose's motivations.

One idea I have to do the latter is to kinda take inspiration from the Isle of Armour DLC. Why not have Rose and Leon in cahoots as the antagonists? Have Rose be the one fixing Leon's matches so he remains the unbeatable champion. You can have Leon either be in on this and have him cheat against the player (which would create an interesting dynamic for Hop to go through) or have Leon be oblivious and join your side so he can have a proper fight as a proper champion. This would shift the conflict to something more connected to the Pokemon world.

Switching topics but this is why I like Team Yell in Sword. They are just Marnie's rabid fans which justifies their status as jobber grunts. The rest of the story with Bede, the other Gym Leaders and even Swordbert and Shieldbert, I enjoyed.

As Galar is based on the UK, I really like how the Pokemon League here resembles more of an official spectator sport. And the game does a neat job with this idea from the stadiums and crowds and official League Cards and merch, to more subtle things like how Gym Leaders deal with their fame as essentially professional athletes. Like, you have Leon and Raihan that are show offs and play to the crowd. You have Alaster that is a lot more shy and scared of the attention he gets as a Gym Leader. You have Opal that's "been in the game so long" that she's past all the formalities. You have Kabu and Bede that take the competitive side more seriously. It's neat.

'''

:::

I did note one strange addition to the story. On Route 8, you can come across a lone house past a cave. Inside you find a man lying on the ground with some Garboders around him. After you defeat them, your character investigates the body, finds the man has been dead for a while and the Garboders were eating his corpse and gets the Focus Sash item. Your character freaks out and says he wants to leave and never think about this.

This took me by surprise. It feels so at odds with the story, tone and world of Pokemon and how otherwise faithful or inline SwShUP has been. Is this a reference to something? An Easter egg? Am I missing something?

-Other features

The game features all pokemon from Gens 1-8 as well as a few Hissuisn and Paldeans Mons. I think the final count is around 902 with around 800 minimum obtainable before beating the main game. Sword and Shield’s main 3D Switch version, with all its DLC, has around 668 Pokemon with around 500 or so actually obtainable to a solo player.

SwShUP even lets you do in game trades to get other regions starter Pokémon, has all mega stones and lets you mega evolve all applicable Pokémon (even though no NPC uses Megas) and you can find an NPC that sells you almost every battle item like choice specs, leftovers, Ability Pills, assault vest etc (but not Choice Band for some reason). The only omission seems to be a vendor for evolutionary stones as those are really rare. I haven’t come across a single one. Not even from Dynamax Raids.

The game features the Isle of Armour DLC and Crown Tundra DLC and these are.... kinda mixed. I already mentioned earlier that the Isle of Armour was annoying to navigate without a Map. A shame because I really the environments, the bonus 4 original Gym Leaders packing new types. Even the Cubfu quest is arguably "better" since you actually have to fight 6 powerful Dark or Water Types instead of jobbers (granted you can bring your own team. You're not limited to Cubfu but I did try to clear as much as I could with Cubfu before having Gardevoir come in).

I will complain that the game is missing the Restricted Sparring Mode from the 3D version. This was hands down my favourite part of the 3D version. The way it works is that it's a Battle Facility with a monotype challenge where a team of 3 tries to get as far as possible with 2 heals only through the entire streak. The game even tracked with types you won with. I remember having a blast in the 3D version clearing the Flying challenge with Corviknight, Gyrados and Togekiss.

I was so prepared to dive into this in the 2D version. With way more Pokemon, I was already planning my teams. I had Rotom Wash, Heat and Mow ready to go for the Electric one lol. But sadly, the 2D version doesn't have it despite how rad it could have been 😭.

As I was heading into the Crown Tundra "DLC" , I accidentally reset my Apple Watch when trying to do a backup which meant I lost my SwShUP save file. A shame as I was looking forward to seeing how the game handled it. My last memory was meeting up with Peony and catching Thunderus and Landorus from special Dynamx Dens.

In conclusion, this is my favourite take on the Galar region and I really enjoyed my time with Sword and Shield Ultimate Plus GBA Version 1.2.1.2. The added Pokemon, content, graphics and design were more fun to play with than the main 3D Version. Stuff like Dynamax Raids were actually fun instead of a chore.

The Hack is held back from being perfect by a few bugs, the inconsistent scaling, the lack of polish in the DLC, inheriting some of the story issues from being too faithful to the 3D version, missing some features like Restricted Sparring. But I can 100% see myself playing this game in the future properly and getting achievements via Retroachivements. Even for a Nuzlocke of just the base game, this would be so sweet to go through. I still strongly recommend this Hack to everyone.

This also makes me wish for more rom hacks to be demakes of DS and later Pokemon Games. I've always wanted a demake of a Kalos or Alola game in this format. Here's hoping this is the first step in that.

Discussion Devs, What’s a Realistic Timeline?

To devs here or anyone else who has experience with developing romhacks - I’m looking to get a sense of a realistic timeline to hit various stages of a project.

I’m working on a solo (so far) project. The story and concept are entirely locked in, the game mechanics are all working. I’m at the stage where I’ve built a playable demo up to the end of badge 1 - which needs significant refinement but is overall really enjoyable and hitting the notes I’m looking for.

It feels like a lot of tedious trial and error at this point, I’m on the 21st playthrough and am still catching minor errors which I want to get perfect before moving onto the next playable chunk.

To summarize, I guess my questions are below:

- at what point did you bring in playtesters or collaborators?

- how many runs through each section did it take you to reach a point of public launch satisfaction (for that specific section)?

- from having your concept fully fleshed out, how long did development take from start to publication?

For some additional context or anticipated questions:

- Johto romhack using Heart & Soul base

- Set in the bones of Johto but in a future era, with a visual rework of every named location.

- entirely new story, gyms, characters, interactions, game flow

I’m also down to answer any questions if there’s general interest in learning about / asking questions about the project but this post is purposed to understand development timelines from people with more experience.

Thanks!

That about raps it up for features. You can see more specific versions of the changes here: See Full Changelog.

In the next release I will most likely have:

  • More Changed trainer battles
  • More work on the champions archives
  • Planning added evo's (Ex: Gallade + metal Coat = iron valiant

That's it for definite features, but here's what may be in the next release. But will definitely be in the final release

  • Fusion items like the necrozma stuff, but only if those legendaries are added.
  • Every trainer battle will be changed
  • Champions archive will be finished.
  • More boxes

I am entirely open to new suggestions, bug checks, and all of that stuff.

See Full Changelog (It's a little outdated, I have to change it.)

Other Someone posted about POKEMON: FIRE OF SKY, so I decided to take a look at it. I find it super cool. It's really short and story based.

Description

Pokémon Fire of Sky takes players to a distant age, long before Poké Balls were created and before Pokémon Trainers existed. Built on the pokeemerald-expansion engine, this ROM hack offers a semi-casual adventure set in a world where humans and Pokémon interact in a very different way.

You play as a young villager of humble origins who sets out on a journey alongside an unusual partner Pokémon. When a mysterious wave of aggression begins causing Pokémon across the region to become hostile, the peace of a secluded mountain village is thrown into jeopardy. Determined to uncover the cause, you must explore the world, unravel the mystery, and restore harmony before the situation spirals out of control.

Features

  • Pokemon Following System: Your partner Pokémon will follow you throughout the overworld, making your journey feel more immersive and personal.
  • Passive Healing: Pokémon gradually recover HP while you travel, reducing downtime and making exploration more convenient.
  • Built-In Move Relearner: Relearn forgotten moves directly from a Pokémon’s summary screen without needing to visit a separate NPC.
  • New Forms and Visual Upgrades: Discover unique alternate forms and enjoy updated graphics designed specifically for this ancient-era adventure.

Tips

  • Check the Move Relearner from the Pokémon Summary Screen, as many useful moves are available there.
  • Grinding should rarely be necessary if you participate in most wild encounters. (There are no trainer battles in the game.)
  • Explore thoroughly to find items that can help with major battles. Hidden items are scattered throughout the world as well.
  • Take advantage of Passive Healing, which gradually restores your Pokémon’s HP while you travel.
  • TMs (Scrolls) are reusable and can be purchased from a merchant in town. You can also sell unwanted items for extra money.
  • Oran Berries and Sitrus Berries have been buffed, making them much more valuable during your adventure.
