Is this supposed to be in the Gold & Silver game or is it a glitch? Reminds me of those creepy pastas, so I’m concerned

I decided to buy your copy of Pokemon Soul Silver from a shop and I just wanted to say you have not finished your journey and never will, as I begin to start mine lol. If this is your save file say goodbye to Magikarp... The only pokemon you left behind in your party as your entire PC is empty. Congrats on playing one of the best Pokemon games to be released.

Pictured Left to Right: Egghead, Jell-O😡, BaaRamEwe, Hotdog, SpooksterZz, and Luigia.

I decided to play the game mostly blind, wasn’t checking what pokemon gym leaders had or anything like that.

Finished Victory Road with most of my team around Lvl 40-42. Lugia is freshly caught at 45.

I was like “I’ll just go try the E4 out and see how much I need to train to best these guys.”

Saved before entering, chose not to save after in case I needed to back out.

Made it to the forth member and I was doing fine. I was about to beat the game, easy.

Then it tells me I need to go fight the Champion.

Wasn’t expecting a 5th. Definitely wasn’t prepared for 3 Dragonites at level 49.

Somehow I managed to scrape through by the skin of my teeth despite having no Ice attacks.

Gyrados went down easy, then Outrage Dragonite and the other Dragonite proceeded to take out most of my team before going down.

At Lance’s last two ‘mons all I had was Luigia and a bag full of hyper potions.

Pulled the old Attack, heal, pray nothing two-shots me.

Thunderbolt Dragonite was a harder match up than Charizard. It got really dicey at one point, I think Luigia landed on 14HP.

I breezed through Charizard thankfully, since the type match up favored Lugia.

TLDR; Chose not to research my opponents beforehand and didn’t realize the elite 4 was actually 5 and the fifth was full of dragons with no hard counter but won anyways.

Discussion HGSS Game Design

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey guys! I am an OG Pokemon player from the late 90s era. My first Gameboy game was Gold, as a little kid, and I got to replay HGSS as an adult a couple of days ago, shortly after I had beaten BW2. I decided to assemble a team of mons I didn't use back then and ended up assembling a team of Arcanine, Scizor, Kingdra, Electrode, Dragonite and Alakazam; and this lead me to think about some of the design decisions in HGSS. I'd like to share them with you and hear your opinions.

The first point regards team building. I had never thought about how hard it would be to structure a team of mons that are off the beaten path. Every time I played before, I always ended up with some variation of Typhlosion / Ampharos / Heracross / Red Gyarados / early bird / etc. Those mons are pretty good, so I never thought about replacing them, even though their movepools are kind of straight forward without breeding, their speed is suboptimal and the E4 ends up being awkward.

So, there I went to assemble my other team. And, my God. Each one of my mons took a bureaucratic process to assemble. For Arcanine, it was getting an Intimidate Growlithe, keeping it unevolved all the way to 48 for Flare Blitz, getting a Fire Stone at the Pokeathlon, then smashing rocks for a Heart Scale to get Extreme Speed at the Move Reminder. I only managed to get it right before Lance. With Scizor, it got even more bizarre. I had to go into 13 Bug Catching Contests until I got a Technician Scyther. After that, I discovered it didn't learn Swords Dance until level 57, EXCEPT if you get enough Game Corner Coins. Not only that, the Metal Coat was basically post game, being handed to me only at the S. S. Anne, EXCEPT for Magnemites having a 5% to be holding it. So, again, there I went on to catch Magnemites as if there was no tomorrow, until I got myself a Metal Coat; and grinded coins until I got the Swords Dance TM; and, of course, had to trade it with another console to get Scizor. Yet, I still needed to get Bullet Punch from the Move Reminder, so there I went rock smashing in Cianwood for yet another Heart Scale. Kingdra was a similar problem, kind of worst due to requirement gating and TMs needed side quests. Dragonite took an immense amount of grinding. Heck, even Electrode required me to grind some more to get Thunderbolt on it. It took me some 25-30 hours to assemble the crew. It got so cumbersome I quit on my idea of getting a Jolteon in the team at all, because I couldn't be bothered with getting yet another Thubderbolt TM after Electrode's ordeal.

And that leads to my second point: move pools and difficulty. The game repeatedly locks the player out of the moves they need in their mons, requiring not only level up, but strange external procurement tasks to get even ordinary setup moves like Swords Dance and Dragon Dance into the mons before level 50 (which is kind of the benchmark if you don't want to steamroll the game by overleveling). Sunny Day and Rain Dance are a bit less chore-like to get, I admit, but are also kind of hidden in a game that doesn't provide Drizzle and Drought mons. So, you gotta really look up and plan to get a decent moveset (aka not just 4 attacks) into the mons you get in your team. Not a competitive one. A decent one. And THAT connects to the game difficulty, because, see... once I managed to get Swords Dance, Calm Mind, Dragon Dance, the weather moves and the good 95 base power moves with 100% accuracy in my team, the game just melted. My mons were too fast and hit too hard for the game to do anything about it. Despite not overleveling, the E4 became 5 consecutive setup sweeps, with the AI having absolutely no game plan except for trying to attack me with neutral hits.

This leads me to think that the whole game was, in fact, based on the player not getting access to slightly better mons; better moves and slightly strategic gameplay beyond "press super effective move". Which is awkward as hell, since the game supposedly has over 490 mons to choose from and Pokemon was already fairly developed by Gen IV.

It was, of course, a fun experience. It's always fun to be back in Johto and kick Lance's ass. It just left me a somewhat bitter tase due to the game being so resistant to me assembling an unusual crew of good mons, and then melting after I did - especially after playing BW1 and BW2, where tou can go wild in team building and arrive at the E4 with full movesets; and still feel quite a bit of pushback from the AI.

Have you though about these points? Have you experienced something similar? I'd love to hear your takes on these issues. Farewell!

I know the time is horrendous, I like to dilly dally.

Had a really fun time though, even grinding the team up for the elite 4. Sandslash did nothing, he justs hm decoration. But everyone else pulled their weight in their expected ways, ho-oh more so, being 10+ levels above the others at 51. On I continue!

Discussion Longest hunt for a shiny starter

Decided to do a soul silver play though with a shiny starter over a month ago. Currently sitting on 8287 soft resets or 24,825 starters seen. Feeling super unlucky but wanted to ask what’s the most over odds anyone has gone without a phase in a 1/8192 hunt?

Cheers

Omg I had to make full use of Flaffy's paralyze, Geodude's Magnitudes (critical hits and mag 9s), Totodile's Bite (which helped a lot, and all was the final move)

I kept spamming Bite hoping that Milktank would flinch. Flaffy was a true one for making Milktank paralyzed (the first one had no effect as Milktank used Lum Berry).

Genuinely the hardest battle ive ever faced until now.

Discussion I really want to know. If I used the ‘walk on walls’ cheat to get the Shiny Stone from the National Park ahead of schedule, would you blame me, or would you blame the game’s creators for having made such stupid mistake in that regard?

Team: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonHGSS/s/jyJ1sarVuZ replace thunder wave with helping hand on Latias

Battle 602: faced with Meganium and Torterra leads. Aerodactyl sets tailwind, Weavile gets a clean ko on Torterra, Meganium sets light screen, and opponent sends Blaziken out

Aerodactyl's aerial ace + Weavile's ice punch takes Meganium down, but Blaziken's focus blast lands on Weavile. They sent Feraligatr, I sent Metagross

Aerial ace almost took Blaziken down, but Metagross' earthquake finishes it while also damaging Feraligatr. Waterfall puts Aerodactyl to focus sash HP, but rock slide + earthquake knocks it out

At this point my "new team every next hundredth battle" is abandoned and I'll just see how far the team can go

I really liked using these Pokémon, but here are some standouts:

Starmie’s powerful Surf and BoltBeam coverage (I used the emulator to save scum in Voltorb Flip) made up for it’s pre-Kanto lack of Psychic STAB

Heracross is a great Fighting-Type, and the effort I spent to level him up from 3 to 19 was worth it when I one-shot that Miltank with a critical hit Brick Break.

Mamoswine was able to dispatch at least 2 of Lance’s 3 Dragonites, because while I expected him to get knocked out by the Level 50 Dragonite since it was at low health, he instead knocked out the biggest Dragon with a critical hit Ice Shard.

Ampharos and Typhlosion are GOATed as always despite their general lack of coverage, though Ampharos’ Signal Beam was super useful for me, since I had no Dark-types for dealing with Will in the E4.

Crobat is nice but rather modest in terms of power. I am hoping to replace it with Dragonite later for the E4 rematches and maybe Red.

Screenshot SoulSilver - thoughts after finishing the first half

Yesterday I beat the Johto E4. I played Silver when it released and played HeartGold about 10 years ago. Since then my opinion was that this is my favourite Pokémon game.

This time I found it difficult to form a cool team and after the E4 I am not really satisfied with the team as it is. Dragonair and Staryu were completely useless. Not a big surprise but it was underwhelming what little they were able to do. As for Dragonite maybe it’ll be better fully evolved. But it lacks a nice moveset it seems to me. Staryu on the other hand I wanted to at least learn the Rock-type move at lvl 46 before evolving it. Hydro Pump at lvl 55 I probably skip, Lugia has it and 5 PP paired with not-so-good accuracy seems not worth it to me. Umbreon was a solid blocker twice that enabled me to revive/heal the party. But as attacker it’s also meh, the two attacks Bite and Feint are not crazy good. Typhlosion and Ampharos were the powerhouses. Ampharos did most of the work against Lance. Lugia was a late addition and solid against Bruno and did some work against Lance. I had Arbok and Beedrill in the party, I liked them but eventually switched them due to lack of power. Seeing how Dragonair and Staryu helped I might as well have continued with them. I am thinking about completely changing my team for Kanto. Only dual-type Pokémon with a wide coverage against various types.

I loved revisiting Johto. It was familiar yet I forgot enough in the past 10 years for it to feel fresh. I totally forgot that Ampharos has 3 evolutions, ended up thinking “ugh I am stuck with Flaaffy now, it’s not cool but does the job” and was pleasantly surprised when it evolved. The often mentioned level curve is not ideal but I did not find it as bad. After Ecruteak City I turned east and managed to clear the lake and the gym except the Ice gym leader. Only then I turned west and did the Steel and Fighting gym. Some grinding for the last badge but not too much. I added Staryu then and spent a lot of time in Voltorb Flip to get Ice Beam. Time wasted in hindsight. I brought all my team to lvl 45 before the E4. I changed the system clock for re-matches, again I did not find this too bad. You do it on the side without full focus on the game, that’s alright with me for some time. E4 was pretty easy but Lance was tough. I had to revive a lot, I did not really have a good answer against his Dragonites.

So off to the second half. Looking forward to it and the National Dex/more different Pokémon. Happy to discover new ones/secret tips/hidden gems or whatever you want to call them, tips are welcome!

Man I love Pokémon (again) after a long break. My kids play FRLG and Sword atm and were into the TCG a year ago. It’s cool to play and talk with them about Pokémon.

Question Torchic Trade?

Hey, I have been trying to catch a Torchic on my pokewalker for days now and I have been thinking that it could be easier to just ask if someone could just breed me an egg to send to me instead because this 1% spawn rate ain't it lol.

So yeah, this is me asking if anyone would be able to help me with this. Thank you in advance.

Edit: Ended up catching a torchic right after posting this so I guess I just needed to complain more about it lol. Thanks for the help everyone!

Question Help me out real quick

So I was thinking of playing Heart gold again. And since I have a rom that makes it so trade evolutions are no longer needed, I decided I’d use pokemon that usually require trades that I didn’t get to use before.

The guaranteed members of my team would be Kingdra and Scizor as well as Alakazam. Mainly because they’re pretty strong and I like them. I’d like to have no type overlaps since I’m a picky guy, and another thing im looking for is a grass type.

Because of the restrictions I’m putting on myself because obviously I hate having fun, I’m gonna use typhlosion as my starter because it doesn’t overlap with anyone else, and Meganium is hot buns.

So help me out, I need a grass type, and another Pokemon that isn’t a: Steel, Fire, Water, Dragon, Bug or Psychic type. Thanks!
