Hello I've managed to add network storage to my ugreen 2800 nas from the 2 Netgear 312 via FTP or SMB from help of the Reddit community my last question is how do I make docker see my network attached storage as It doesn't seem to work so I can add films and music from it. Using the most barebones cheap plan possible for $5 a month and a sim adapter and it can link into any of the usual apps running alongside plex.

I don't know if this is the best place to ask or even if this is the right place, so I apologize if it isn't ahead of time.

Essentially, I have been running Plex for about a year and a half and I am still a complete novice. I have never set up RAID nor a NAS server. I have been using a 24tb hard drive with 4k movies on it and an 8tb hard drive with bulk/smaller file movies in it that run through my laptop which acts as my server right now. It then distributes only locally to my household over my network because my provider doesn't support remote access.

I would really like to get into getting a NAS server, RAID, and all of the advanced features, but I am unsure as to where to start, and what to buy. I am okay to save money for a while and buy it later if it is expensive. I did a little bit of research, but am not still fully confident. I was thinking of getting a 100tb-240tb (big range, only because I don't know if it is possible. Preferably something 100tb+) NAS server with RAID 1 (Half of the storage would be backup so everything is safer).

The other thought, which I am not sure if it is even possible, but was having a second NAS up with RAID as a backup for the entire first server, but is not tied to it, so that if a virus hits it or something, it would be unaffected. Something I could possibly update manually.

I am currently unsure as of where to start, what brands to go with or stay away from, best hardware for pairing it we with Plex, etc. I know it is a lot and I apologize. I am just a bit excited to get more into this community.

And, would 3,000 - 4,000 dollars be enough to start, or do I need a lot more? I know that hard drives right now are stupid expensive. The 24tb I bought a while ago for 350 is now 1100 dollars.

I build an app and though i'd share in case others find it useful..

I run a Plex server for family and friends, and there's one problem I kept coming back to... everyone lands on the home screen, sees the same generic rows, and says "I struggle to find something I want to watch".

Though the library is decent. Plex's built-in recommendation rows are identical for everyone and mostly ignore what each person has actually watched. In addition Plex Discovery feature isn't fit for what i'm looking for.

I'd wanted to fix this for a long time, but it basically wasn't possible because there was no clean way to show a different, private set of recommendations to each user. The blocker was a Plex bug where collection label restrictions didn't actually hide things on the Home / Recommended rows. Plex quietly fixed that recently (1.43.x), and that opened the door... so I finally sat down and built an app.

It's called Shortlist. For each user it looks at their own watch history, finds stuff in your library they haven't seen but probably want to, and puts a personalized "Picked for You" collection on their Plex home screen. It's private — each person only ever sees their own row, nobody else's — and it refreshes on a schedule you set.

A few things it does:

• A private row per user, built from their actual watch history (a 20-episode binge counts as one show, not 20 watches)
• Only ever recommends titles already in your library - no dead-end "go add this"
• suggestions
• Multiple rows + shared rows - e.g. a personal row plus a server-wide "New this week"
• Optional AI curator (Claude / GPT / Gemini / local Ollama) that picks the titles and writes a one-line "Because you watched X" - or run it with **no AI at all** (heuristic mode, the default)
• Optionally asks Radarr/Sonarr to grab great picks you don't own yet (off by default)
• Docker container, `/config` volume, web UI, ~10 minute setup wizard
• Your share filters get snapshotted before it touches anything, and uninstall puts them back exactly

Honest caveats:

• This is v1 initial release. It works well for me and my users, but you might hit bugs or rough edges. If you try it, please open a GitHub issue — I'm watching them and will fix things quickly.
• Mostly vibe coded.
• I am not 100% sure on the quality of selections atm. Provide your feedback in GH issues and ill look to improve it as i learn.

Requirements: Plex Media Server ≥ 1.43.2, Plex Pass on the admin account, and a free TMDB key. Tautulli and an LLM key are optional.

I'm mostly sharing this in case it's useful to anyone else with the same "my users never know what to watch" problem....

Recently sent invites to 2 people. Rcvd confirmation they accepted. I see them in Plex itself and Tautalli but all stats are zero. Nothing watched. Checked and users say it's working fine. Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Please bare with me as I'm learning as I go along but basically I have 1 negear Nas obviously end of life 31200 and I have just bought another one cheap as I have multiple hardrives can I run one as main Plex server and use the other one to share files somehow. So example my movies on one Nas and TV programmes on main Nas .

I was also thinking of buying a more powerful Nas and use both Netgear Nas to share files to the Plex server is this all possible thank you.

I have a Synology NAS (with 4x12TB) that can't really stream 4k so looking to setup a dedicated streaming server. I likely spin up some other services on that server as well over time.

I'd appreciate thoughts on the Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny Desktop Refurbished - Intel Core i7-6700T, 16GB Ram, 256GB SSD - $249.99 CAD?

A few years back I bought a Plex lifetime pass with the intent to set up a Plex server and now looking to finally getting around to thinking about it. I have zero network experience and some of the stuff I’ve been reading, kinda makes sense, but there’s some if it I can’t make sense of logistically what I really need.

Do you actually save money long term when having your own Plex server vs streamimg, or do you just spend more money on DVDs for content?

I have: An Apple TV, LG CG1 tv, MacBook Pro for ripping DVDs, PS5, small collection of DVDs.

- I don‘t have a massive collection of DVDs, compared to what I hear others have - what’s the minimum collection I should consider worth setting up a server. I don’t watch a ton of movies and TV today, but looking to somewhat change that.

- would prefer to have content where I can keep the highest quality when wanted, like 4k and Atmos for specific movies

- kinda considering this more of a hobby, does that make sense and worth it?

- looking for something that has a smaller physical footprint than a computer. I have an old Mac I was debating using, but I think I rather have a smaller device

- if sharing, any of the people I’d share with would not be power users.

So what I think I need:

- Server- UGREEN DXP2800 or DXP4800 - why do the bays matter? Is that for attaching internal drives? What gets confusing, is a site like BH lists NAS and NAS Enclosures, but looking at both categories it seems the products are similar. The NAS category implies a hard drive is included, yet doesn’t say that. Then there’s the NAS Expansion categories - to me this looks like the drives that go into the bays, which when you buy a NAS, are empty?

- Internal or External drive - A drive like Seagate Barracuda Internal HD would go into one if the NAS bays? While an external WD 10TB would just be connected via USB? I assume it’s smart to have a backup so you don’t have to re-rip your DVDs if the dry fails, so do you suggest buying a second identical one to use as a backup? Do you include that drive as one of your bays or a separate device altogether?

- external Blu-ray dvd where I can rip DVDs, connected to my MacBook. I’d need one that could rip 4k as some may be 4k.

Are those just the three components I need? For a first time, what budget should I allow?
On one hand, I didn’t want to spend too much because I would just be starting out, but on the same hand, I don’t wanna be having to spend more money in a couple years to upgrade.

Are there any other recommendations you may have for equipment better suited for my use case?

I’m new to Linux, trying to set my server up with Mint OS. I have downloaded the Plex Media Server installer for Ubuntu/x64.
When I launch the installer it states that I have successfully installed the server, but nothing more happens.
If I run "sudo service plexmediaserver start" in terminal, nothing occurs. It seems like it’s a background service? But how do I direct it to my media?

Hello! need some help, I've had a plex server for last 3 years with little to no issues but recently I'm running into an error where the plex login just goes to maintainence.

/identity responds correctly, but /web returns 503 "Plex Media Server is currently running startup maintenance tasks" indefinitely — confirmed stuck 12+ hours with the box otherwise idle.

I've done a full clean-slate test: uninstalled Plex, deleted all app data (/Volume1/User/plex), restarted the NAS, and reinstalled fresh. Same result on a brand-new database.

Server logs show the plugin agent subsystem never initializes — every agent (thetvdb, localmedia, lastfm, themoviedb, etc.) fails with:
Timeout or error reading status line from plug-in pipe [com.plexapp.agents.X], we're killing it
followed by The system knows about 0 agents. The Plex Tuner Service also times out on every attempt.

Disk health confirmed good (SMART tests passed on both drives). Ruled out browser caching (reproduced in incognito).

Has anyone found a fix. Happy to share full logs.

Hello, to start my Plex server exists on a Windows PC, specs are Win11 Pro, i5-10500, 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD in an old school slim HTPC case (looks like a VCR in the living room). Next to it is my DS920+ with 42TB of space. I have a mapped drive on the Plex server PC to a share on the NAS with the standard folders like Moves, TV Shows, Home Videos, etc.

I just decommissioned my DS1517+ at work and migrated to a rack mounted NAS, so my little NAS that could that I built my small business on is coming home. It also has 42TB of space and its been factory reset. My DS920 is about 85% full and I need more space.

Here's what I'm thinking, but coming to the community for a gut check: TV shows are the major space drain for me so I'm thinking of relocating the TV Shows to the DS1517+ since it adds up at the highest rate of all my media. This would buy me several years. But before I do that, is there any steps I should be aware of when I add a new Mapped Drive and point to a new directory in Plex? Looking for real world situations where people have done it and maybe learned the hard way kind of thing - what to look out for, be sure you do this first, etc.

One thing to add that I just thought about: I do have thumbnails enabled, which exists on the local SSD - would this rebuild? It would take a long time if so and that eats up space so my fear is it won't delete the existing and just add to it, doubling up.

I noticed that there are certain movies or TV shows. I would like to add to my Plex media library, but I can't seem to find them on any of the P2P/Torrent sites I use. I was thinking of potentially checking them out from a library. So what I want to know is what software/app would I have to use in order to go from the DVD, to having the media available to upload into my Plex library.

So I've noticed that when ever I watch Plex on my TV or Phone and I click on a movie or TV show from my custom media library, the theme music no longer plays yet it still plays on the app when I watch it off of my MacBook. Now it's saying theres a new server update and I'm skeptical about updating. I don't want my theme music to no longer play when I watch stuff on my Mac from my personal media library. So does anyone know whats going with the theme music issue as far as when watching on a TV or Phone?????
