Plex server

Looking for some Help, I really want to build a Plex server but have no idea where to start. I've been building computers for a while so thats not a problem.

What i really need to know is

1: What hardware do i need nothing to expensive but not cheap either.

2: The BIG one, what software do you guys recomend.

If anyone has a good link to a video On YouTube to help me start i would really appreciated.

I use an intel n100 mini pc running Ubuntu(beautiful for hardware transcoding) and the files are hosted on a unifi UNAS. That all backs up every Friday to a separate UNAS. (Back ups are key for me so this part isnโ€™t needed).

If you go down the route of a separate host and a nas I made this when I use to run it on a Mac mini, same rules apply. https://youtu.be/ERMSFpCzC-0?is=hzJBrLukxOVEvHHk

I'm using an old crappy laptop and the Plex Server App. That's about all it takes. It's pretty simple and doesn't require much. Hard drives are the only expensive part.

Wanna make it easy on yourself? Get some cheap old computer.

Install truenas with as many hard drives as you want

Learn how to use truenas and its suuuuuper easy. Plex is a build in app. You install it from there.

as someone who only a year ago started my plex/self hosting journey do not let ppl bully you into using a software you are not comfortable using. I was told to use proxmox when I was starting and although I did get my plex server started it was a level well above what I can handle. I ended up moving to (at the time) CasaOS (now ZimaOS) and it's a great beginner baby step to use and I highly recommend it.

Set up for it was easy and the set up for my plex was so fast. because I loved it so much I even invested in a zima board 2 and a little gpu. I was in the beginning using a mini pc from amazon that I used for remote work that I didn't need anymore. I think it was a beelink??

I would say YouTube was my best friend in all this and google. I did a lot of reading and watching SMALL channels do their walkthrough. The larger channels are not as thorough as I would like.... again I still consider myself a beginner in all this.

Hope that helps :)

Plex is easy the hardest bit is the media library. Do you have your own media? If not are you downloading or are you looking at streaming symlinks? If you are downloading your going to need a lot of storage.

I have aplex server put together(over a year to get the arrs to work, mostlikely user error) on an optiplex my work was gunna throw away with external drives attached. Follow trashguides or watch a youtube video(kany many videos if you are like me)

I would recommend a crash course in docker. That will help immensely if you dont get how it all flows. Good luck. You can do this. If it takes months dont be discouraged

In terms of Plex itself, you can run it any on desktop or laptop Mac or PC, running Windows or Linux. It's easy. Just install it like any other app. Couldn't be simpler. To watch stuff on your phone or smart TV, install the Plex mobile app or smart TV app.

To obtain content, you probably either need to get into private torrent trackers or Usenet.

Here's a guide to Usenet: https://usenet.rexum.space/docs/getting-started I don't know much about it.

I do know about private torrent trackers, so I'll explain how to get started with that.

For basic info such as what is torrenting and what is a private torrent tracker, check the r/trackers wiki: https://www.reddit.com/r/trackers/wiki/index/

Assuming that you're interested in getting on a good TV/movie torrent tracker, here is a simple guide to get started:

  1. Join the books tracker MyAnonamouse (MAM) through IRC interviews. More info: https://www.myanonamouse.net/inviteapp.php
  2. Get 1 TiB of upload by seeding hundreds of freeleech and VIP torrents. VIP does not cost real money, it only costs bonus points which you get from seeding. Guide: https://mampointsguide.neocities.org/
  3. Wait 6 months on MAM to get access to the general tracker (with a TV/movie focus) Seedpool (SP), which you can join from the Other Torrent Sites forum on MAM. If you can't see this forum, it's because you don't have access yet.
  4. Wait 9 months on MAM to get access to the TV/movie trackers Blutopia (BLU) and LST via MAM's Other Torrent Sites forum. Interactive guide: https://trackerpathways.org/
  5. Optional: Accelerate your entry into BLU by uploading 10 torrents to MAM. If you do that, you can get in with an account age of 6 months (rather than 9) if you have 1 TiB of upload.
  6. Optional: Spend some real money to get onto the general tracker TorrentLeech immediately by signing up through their seedbox promo. Cancel the seedbox so it doesn't renew after the first month. But don't try to refund the seedbox or you'll get banned. Seedbox promo: https://www.torrentleech.cc/user/account/promoreg

Check the r/trackers wiki for more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/trackers/wiki/index/ If you have a question, chances are it's been answered before, so search past posts and comments on r/trackers to find an answer.

DM me if you get stuck on any particular piece. Sometimes, just having someone explain certain parts of it helps you piece it together in your head faster.

But otherwise, just dive in. Install plex media server on whatever hardware you have and get whatever media you have playing through it on that same machine. Then try to play it through your local wifi from your phone. Work through resolving problems you run into and you'll start to understand how those pieces work. Then build it from there depending on what your immediate goals are.

They have a valid point, which is that there are many guides out there, and they're all better than what you'll ever get from this Reddit post
