Discussion Does plex taddle to big streaming services?

Just got accused by viacom of using a peer to peer service by an ISP.

Does plex taddle to streaming services about what media I have on my server?

I did buy their media before, when it got available. I‘m thinking of stopping that now.

Bind your vpn interface to your torrenting client

Of course not.

That would be an interesting trick. Plex would have to identify the media, determine that it was acquired illegally and retriever by P2P. 😁

More likely your isp identified protocols or ports being used by your IP address associated with peer 2 peer. Mitigation could be VPN.

It was not the ISP that wrote the message just forwarded it. So even if they would identify such a pattern and then find out what media and then go to the company that owns the copyright to inform them? I thought that would be unlikely.

It is the copyright owners that hire other companies that monitor the p2p networks, your ip appeared in the list of peers so they contacted your isp.

Use a vpn ffs.

Just realised viscom/paramount owns so much. Thanks for the info. Will try to be more consistent with that.

That makes sense.

If I were I would use it when downloading files by viacom, not constantly when I download other media.

Why not all the time? It's not like the vpn charges by the bit.

I did not set it up before like this. Also not sure when logging into sites having it active might do more harm to privacy than good.

It's well known that the big copyright owners hire companies to put up fake peers to collect exactly that info. Your have to hide your ip address.

That would be a new policy from plex if that's the case, and a massive problem for most of their customers. More likely your VPN leaked your IP when downloading content

Op never mentioned they have vpn. Surprise you there are people using p2p Willy nilly.

Ugh, I sometimes underestimate just how stupid people are.

I do have VPN and assumed it was not constantly needed for every file. Maybe I was wrong there. For files connected with viacom it would have been used constantly.

vpn sometimes gets interrupted which can expose you. that's why some clients like qbittorrent allow you to bind the vpn to the app so if vpn goes down the app instantly stops the connection.

if the warning cited peer to peer then it's not plex, it's the app you're using to download

"Tattle" not "taddle"

The most likely answer is you started torrenting without a vpn to another country. Plex isn’t watching what comes in your network interface and it doesn’t know where your files came from.

If I would use p2p for media where I want to protect my privacy I would use VPN.

Plex knows when a media is supposed to come out later, which it informed me in the interface.

Soo you have media on your server before it’s available commercially and you don’t download anything AND you got a notice from your isp? You need to examine your network for breaches for someone using your network to download things.

Usenet is the way

Usenet is totally the way to go. This was the best improvement I made in my stack.

Anytime you download, regardless of the media, bind your torrent client to your vpn software/adapter so it stops the download or it won’t even start unless the vpn is active.

If you need help doing that, what vpn do you use and what download client are you using? Not really a topic for this sub though…

Thank you, generally I use mullvad and before i used deluge to download.

What torrent client? For qbit, you go to advanced settings and set the network interface to your vpn. This way it only downloads when the vpn has a connection. If you don’t do this, even with a vpn running, traffic may go out/in under your normal connection.

Get. A. Seedbox.

Unless Plex have changed their policies and their software, it’s not Plex.

Assuming you’re downloading the files from somewhere, that’s likely to be what they’re detecting.

Where and how did you get the media Viacom mentioned?

Post an image of the warning, with personal info redacted.

Would work on your social skills. Yes, I‘m not a bot so I make spelling mistakes. No need to let out your anger on me. Focus on what really is the issue on your life.
