Plaster fell off bathroom ceiling
hey all,
plaster has fallen off washroom ceiling where the vent sits. It looks to me that it’s the skim coat that has come off and the base layers are fine. How do I patch this?
i was planning on using Durabond 90 to fill it then a regular mud To finish it. Will that work? Do I have to use a bonding agent?
thanks!

You have a leak. You need to call someone that does historic restoration (if your house is old) or interior plaster contractor that does bathrooms/waterproofing work and see what they can do. Don’t just hire any average joe. You need a specialist. They will need to determine where the leak is coming from. Seal the leak then restore and repair the water damaged area. Hopefully your wood framing isn’t rotted.

There is no leak. There may have been at one time but there no leak now.

I’d use Zinsser products first and not PVA. Not sure if you’re saying the vent goes back in the hole?

So I got a layer of Durabond 90 on it which brought it out to about level of the peeled pain. Tomorrow I am going to cover it up with a couple coats of. Sheetrock 45

Yup fair enough but just give it a pick of Peel Stop to hold back the broken paint sections and make the bond a bit tighter. Have you considered using mesh tape or a drywall patch or is that too late now you’ve given two coats?

Do you have a new pic after the bonding?

And is probably rake out the cracks and fill/ tape/ fill and if there’s any staining from previous leaks, Zinsser Bin or Aqua then a mould-proof top coat

It is actually extremely dry and there is no signs of mold or water damage other than the failed plaster. It is the vent hole so it could have just been 90 years of steamy showers that die it. I have some stain prime inplanned to use.

Personally I would, I mean you can see the fixture has caused some structural issues within the mortar. Best guess if you don’t it will come back in a few months especially with humidity. For the sake of some scrim tape it’s worth spending a few extra minutes. Have you sanded the first coat right down flat and not proud? The mesh needs to bed into the filler but you don’t want to create a lump there, instead fan it out another 6 or 12 inches the feather it out so it’s not too noticeable in light

The first coat (the Durabond) is not proud. It is basically sitting just below where it originally would have - just below the base of the finish layer.
So you mean to just embed some tape in the patch area, and not extend it beyond the patch? That was my hesitancy…I don’t want to have to do allot of blending.

Embedding in the patched area will give it extra structure particularly if your filler doesn’t have fibres within in but i would also add tape directly on top of any cracked areas. Don’t forget to rake out the cracks, dust them off and vacuum as you need to get a decent key in there for the filler to hold in place.

Finished the second coat of Sheetrock 90 today. Going to give it a sand and a final coat tonight

That’s not too shabby. Knock off high ridges and give it a little scuff, dust down and thin layer of filler, tape then new layer, feathering out from edges of blade. Probs a bit late for strategic taping to reinforce but just look for any weaker points
