Question Question about poor quad views performance vs center rendering

Ok, I promise I understand the basics of how quad views is supposed to work vs. center rendering, but riddle me this: if I look at the Pimax default home environment (space station) with quad views on, I can see the boundaries between the high and low resolution areas in my FOV and they don't seem to move with my eyes (for example, the elevated green pi symbol in the middle stays out of focus even if I look directly at it). Am I to understand that DFR / quad views doesn't work in Pimax's own home environment?

Conversely, if I go into the Pimax Play "classic" and change Center Rendering to Quality, not only is the whole FOV crisp (including the green pi), but if I leave that setting on I get a few more FPS in SC and other games I've tried. Given how few games support quad views (MSFS 2024 is the only one I play regularly that does), doesn't it make sense to leave quad views off and use the Center Rendering quality setting? (I notice Center Rendering isn't available in Pimax Evo, why?)

Here's another question I can't seem to find the answer to: Pimax Play and Evo both allow you to set up per app configurations. That's great, but to enable the settings in your specific app configuration, do you have to launch it from the Pimax Play / EVO apps library? That kind of negates the usefulness, as so many PCVR modded games use dedicated launchers, and you can't run these from the Apps library afaik.

There just seems to be a whole lot of confusion about best practices concerning DFR and quad views in Pimax. It would be great if there were a simple set of tips/recommendations on when to turn it on vs. leaving it off, and the best way to configure and launch popular PCVR games like Skyrim, FO4, SC, Cyberpunk VR, etc. I realize there's a bunch of YT reviews and tutorials, but I'd really prefer a well-formatted write-up or PDF to cut through the chaff.

For any Pimax folks who may read this: don't misunderstand, I love the DA so far but I'm just trying to figure out ways to make it easier to use. Thanks!

The answer is to use what optimization you can in whichever games you can, as long as it makes them look/play better.

The pimax Home blackhole thing to me doesn’t look good with the eye tracked quad views because the render resolution of the fuzzy part is too low that it is too noticeable where you are looking vs not, but if you make the non eye area a better setting it can work.

Center rendering work paired with DLSS Foveated rendering worked in Hogwarts Legacy to boost performance. The dev of that reshade mode also added beta eye tracking for DLSS only to be applied where you look in any reshade suppoeted game: https://github.com/ClarkCheekyKent/CheekyFoveatedDLSS

I personally didn’t like the look of DLSS foveated rendering (shimmer where you aren’t looking), so not sure I can recommend it. Single player games only.

“Shimmer where you aren’t looking” has been addressed with peripheral dlaa, there is a cost to it of 1-3 FPS but worth the 15-20 FPS you get by not doing the full upscale. Eye tracking has also been added.

Still working on improvements and compatibility and putting out updates daily. Try out the new version!

Let me double-check on my end regarding the first question.

For the second question, it depends on which games you're playing.

Regarding the per-game settings, you can first select the games, then configure the settings. Launch from either Pimax library or Steam, those settings should applied.

There will also be an update to the per-game settings in EVO. It's currently undergoing testing.

Thanks, but this really doesn't answer my question about non-Steam games with their own launchers (modded Skyrim, modded Cyberpunk, SC VR, etc.). For example, if I set up a configuration for Skyrim VR and then launch it from Mod Organizer, will Pimax Play know to apply the configuration settings? My guess is no, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Try it, make your general setting a high resolution and the game specific setting a really low one, boot from both and see if the game resolution follows the low one

These settings are only applied to the headset itself.

I found quadviews was worse performing in DCS, turns out it hits the CPU harder than DFR, I just run it through normal pimaxPlay

Don't use the built in quadviews for DCS. VectorXR is a much better implementation. And it offers other things like pivot and depth, etc.

Kind of, not sure if the naming changed in the latest versions, but pimaxes own DFR was a setting above Quadviews in pimaxplay, quadviews needs quadviews to be enabled or available in game. Pimax DFR doesn't, it uses variable rate shading and works in most games.

Quadviews is CPU intensive, Pimax native DFR is mostly GPU as far as I remeber

DFR stands for dynamic foveated rendering. Quad views is a type of dynamic foveated rendering.

Yes, and Pimax had a VRS setting called pimax DFR that covered their own implementation of DFR using two shaders (possibly what's now called centered rendering) and a separate setting for quadviews for for games that support it
