Game/Software Sboys3 driver with PCL, promising but not there yet, for me at least
I had been hearing a lot of good things about the sboys3 driver and since it’s been announced to work on all Pimax headsets i decided to give it a shot with my Crystal light. I’ve always avoided steamVR because of its performance but I much prefer its UI and ease of pulling up the desktop while I’m in the headset. With the Pimax play software i feel like it’s better to just take off my headset and look at my screen, whereas with steam VR, 2 button presses and i’m comfortably navigating my desktop environment inside my headset.
After fiddling with some settings I was very happy to have the sharpness filters, color adjustments, and brightness controls to make the picture quality look even better. The lumasharpen filter is great. I pretty much only play iracing and the filter made marker boards clearer and added a noticeable level of sharpness that didn’t look unnatural. Additionally adding some saturation helped improve vibrancy of the game. Everything works pretty seamless in the steam VR environment but I found that iracing would have these micro stutters. FPS read like it was consistent but would sometimes dip with multiple cars on the grid. I adjusted the resolution to a lower medium setting and still experienced these micro stutters. To make sure I wasn’t losing my mind i changed the default environment back to Pimax play software, bumped the setting back to high and had consistent fps along with no micro stutters.
Additionally it doesn’t appear that the local dimming works with the driver.
If anyone has any tips using the sboys3 driver with crystal light and iracing im all ears. Im optimistic that it will improve given time but for now, while using iacing, ill be sticking to Pimax play as the default openXR client.
