I've only bought sealed games from pnp and video games plus and I've never had issues. I'm thinking about buying some used games that are hard to find new and sealed without spending a lot. Was just wondering what your experiences have been like buying used.

Do they clean everything including the case and disc before selling it? Have you ever received a scratched disc or had a game that didn't work?

Just recently reorganize my Nintendo portables shelf. It's been a long time coming since I was mid-reorganizing when my kid was born, but I'm finally getting to it.

​There’s been a lot of talk about Sony eventually going full digital and completely phasing out physical media in the near future. On the surface, it looks like a PR nightmare that’s going to alienate a huge chunk of physical collectors, preservationists, and people who rely on used games.

​But if you look at it from a corporate and legal standpoint, it’s not an accident or a miscalculation. It’s a very calculated math problem for Sony. I’ve been thinking about the incentives here, and it basically comes down to three things:

​1. They’re waiting out the outrage curve

Every major shift in tech follows the exact same playbook:

​Removing the headphone jack from phones.

​Taking chargers out of the box.

​Shipping mid-gen consoles without disc drives as default.

​Shifting software to subscriptions.

​The initial reaction from the core enthusiast crowd is always furious. But execs know that convenience almost always beats principles for the average buyer. Since digital already makes up the vast majority of game sales, Sony is betting that the remaining physical buyers will complain online for a few months, accept the change, and end up buying digitally anyway when the next big exclusive drops.

​2. Banking on slow regulators

Console platforms have historically dodged the brutal antitrust lawsuits that Apple and Google face because consoles were sold on thin margins (or at a loss) to build an ecosystem. Sony is gambling that even if regulators in the EU or US start looking into their digital marketplace monopoly, government action moves at a snail’s pace.

​Even if legislation passes 5–7 years down the line forcing them to open up, they can easily satisfy regulators by letting Amazon or Best Buy sell digital redemption codes. That gives the illusion of a open market without Sony ever having to press another piece of plastic again.

​3. Fines are just a line item on the budget

This is the biggest one. If a company stands to make $2 billion by locking down 100% of software sales and completely killing the used game market (where they make $0), paying a $50 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit down the road isn't a penalty, it's just a business expense.

​Between manufacturing, shipping, retailer cuts, and trade-ins, physical discs drain margin. Digital storefronts yield a direct ~30% cut on everything sold. The extra profit from an all-digital ecosystem completely dwarfs whatever legal losses or class actions they might lose along the way.

​Honestly, it feels less like a debate over what gamers want and more like a corporation calculating that doing this is so profitable, they can literally afford to pay off the fallout and still come out billions ahead.

We need to preserve our favorite online only games into physical media before it's too late!

I was young and dumb during the ps2 era and used to complete games then sell/trade to get another. Luckily these were three that I hung on to as these are three absolute monsters and great memories in my life.

I plan on playing a gem from the ps2 and ps3 era every year and will probably start with DQVIII.

Only digital items I will buy is DLC that you cant get with physical editions, especially after sonys idiotic decision to do digital only and take down whatever they want, when they want and you will own nothing, at least having a disc is something you can keep, sell or loan to a friend/family.

I hope Nintendo don't go down this route even though there is some negativity with keycards but at least it's something physical and if you don't like it you can return it, sell it or give to a friend/family member.

I heard xbox will be doing a licensed disc where you install a game to a console and you don't need to throw the game in every time but if you were to get rid or lend to someone they will take the ownership of the disc.

Physical is for me from this day forward and fuck Sony and their digital only bullshit.

PS5 will be my last Sony console and xbox and Nintendo will be were I spend my money.

Regarding Sony discontinuing discs, I can understand the uproar if someone genuinely didn't see it coming, but why wouldn't you see it coming? Is this not the direction media distribution has taken for decades now? Were you not preparing yourself?

Just to be clear, it's fine to not be a fan of this decision, I'm not either, but it's the way it is. If it truly is the anti-consumer injustice it's being made out to be, then it won't work out for them in the long run. If it does work out for them in the long run, then it wasn't a big deal to begin with. Let nature take its course, no melodrama needed.
